I think it's entirely possible that this was a calculated action by Trump to create a conflict which will consume the news cycle and distract away from his current domestic issues. I don't think he realised just how hard it was going to blow back on himself and actually manage to increase the pressure he's suffering four fold by creating a completely new vehicle of criticism from a broader range of groups.

Any sane person would have told him not to pick a fight that would alienate the GOP senate at a precarious time for his own survival. This has Jared Kushner written all over it.
 
I'm a bit perturbed that Trump wanting to undo Open Skies - in essence allowing for unmonitored Russian military movements is not gaining traction compared to the Turkey thing. Biden s speech at SEIU was spot on about being concerned what he might do next.

Congress needs to stay on point though.

True - people far far less wealthy clearly have escaped consequences for their actions. Though if I had to guess she might be up their as one of the most universally disliked characters in the administration - on both sides that is. But the DeVos family has its tentacles in so many things Trump would never dare not protect her with everything he s got.

In setting up a semi-autonomous region in Rojava, America was on a clash course with a NATO ally, so in the end US chose in favor of its more important ally. Turkey has a point in that YPG has close ties with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a long insurgency against the state. They would never accept a Kurdish-led statelet across the border.

He retweeted or quoted Don Jr at least half a dozen times today, that must be the most fatherly affection Don Jr ever received in his life. He's probably crying in a corner kissing his phone. :lol:

ELI5 please - putting the tragedy of ignoring the potential cost of lives lost in this aside for a moment..

With Erdogan in essence helping Assad and one already relying on Russian equipment and probably clandestine troops and now Turkey doing the same with the withdrawal of US forces (who need defense industry dollars) - and Turkey seemingly no longer buying more US equipment and probably going Russian as well.... Wouldn't the large US/UK/Canadian defense contractors and their lobby be massively pissed off with Donnie?

The only ones happy are probably Merc units like those of Erik Prince.

He can just kick the can down the street like the rest of the world does with Palestinian statehood at least until the terrorist threat is completely eliminated or he could have told Erdogan, I hear you and I'll get back to you after conferring with Pentagon. The issue with him is not just that he is incompetent but that he constantly picks the worst possible option that anyone can do when confronted with it.

America never had a coherent Syria policy. Barack Obama called for Assad "to go" and yet refused to do anything that might help the rebels get rid of him. Obama declared the use of chemical weapons a "red line", then didn't enforce it. Then he picked the Kurds to fight ISIS - although an expedient choice, it put the US at odds with Turkey, a key NATO ally. Trump has just accelerated the inevitable conflict.

What does any of that have to do with pulling the rug under one ally to please another?

Expediting that conflict doesn't serve his interests, it's in US interest to slow walk this to the point where they can extract the remaining troops in a gradual manner and then decide on the best course.

Maybe they could even broker talks between Kurds and Turkey and say this is the best we could do for you, no matter the outcome. The US has the clout to do that.

I’d assume so considering that if someone has discovered their identity and is leaking it to the press, I’m fairly sure that’s a federal crime.

Did you just learn about the Turkish-Kurdish conflict 5 minutes ago? It's been going since 1920 with escalation in the 70's, so it's been 40+ years of hostilities and ceasefires and bombings and assassinations etc. Read up on Ocalan and the PKK.

US cannot just 'broker talks' and expect that will solve everything; it's been tried before and amounted to nothing. Trump or Erdogan are both loathsome, but that doesn't mean US has a strategic interest to side with the Kurds or to maintain the status quo.
