The Trump Presidency - Part 2

The capitulation on basic due process and the coming capitulations on other immigration issues and trans rights by senate Democrats - who respond well to the voters on their right flank - should ensure Trump's second term is more successful and more extreme than his first.
The only thing that can stop him is if the tariffs mess things up economically.

It's going to be more extreme and anyone who thinks otherwise is being deliberately obtuse. Last time around Trump was surrounded by "regular" Republicans that tried to limit some of his more extreme and zany ideas. This time around he's surrounded himself with true MAGA believers and billionaires that can smell a unique opportunity to remove all regulations that impede limitless profit for them.
He owns the Senate, the Supreme Court and social media. The Democrats are bereft of ideas and leadership. His only serious opposition is going to be the heads of the armed services if he tries to use the military too much.
He doesn't own the Senate, there are still enough of the old guard Republican's to thwart him, if they choose to do so, especially if he tries too much of the looney stuff, most of te ones from his first term are still there

if Kennedy botches something up with healthcare, which seems probable at this point, it will surely cost Trump a lot of party-support

I'm sure at that point he'll just fire him and throw him under the bus though, and all will be forgotten 5 minutes later

How and why the feck is this shit legal?

It’s genuinely depressing to that so many people are supportive of what is ultimately a racist policy.

This is truly the return of the robber baron administration.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth.

C.S Lewis was overrated, and that quote proves it.

We can trace the entirety of the failure of the United States government back to JFK's left ass. If he ain't gone and got himself shot, maybe things would've been different.

Perfect time to be a rich man without any morals and spread misinformation to the masses. People celebrate crazy talk and crazy people nowadays. Let's fecking go world, we are doing great, YEEEEEES!!!!

Lots of potential points along the way could have altered today's climate. No Reagan win. Al Gore wins.

The one change that was such an easily winnable election - DNC and Hillary* don't feck around thus Trump doesn't reach demi-god status and infect politics. Trump likely fecks off to run a media empire and Hillary probably gets two terms and two SCOTUS picks. And a proper transition to 2024 GE with a Dem primary. So it's either Newsom or Whitmer vs Haley in the GE, and it's probable that after 16 years of Dem presidency the Repubs win this round.

*Or Biden runs. I partially buy his reasoning on family time but I believe Obama and DNC wanted Hillary and the "it was her time" bullshit, almost like an Obama apology for kicking her ass in 2008. Biden stepped aside for the party. He would have walked the 2016 election.

the corporate takeover of politics was happening no matter what, in my view

especially after the invention of the internet

it feels really hopeless now though

Trump instigated the ban, the congress has followed through, Trump is going to be praised for bring it back. Dems are going to come out and keep saying it should be banned. TikTok is going to swing to Trump for "saving free speech". If it's sold, someone in Trump world is going to buy it.

 Why do they keep handing him political wins on a plate?

JFC....i didn't see this earlier, tiktok altered to original message to specifically give Trump the victory if it comes back. 100m people logged in today to be told "trump is going to save it for you".

I hate this timeline.

What's striking though is how this Trump presidency feels so different to 2016. There is much more sucking up to him including the tech platforms. Even culturally MAGA seems a bit more influential than in 2016.

That being said, his election win wasn't that big so there's that.

I imagine the sucking up is a result of a perception that Trump will be less restrained this time around, and perhaps more vindictive too. Bezos, Zuckerberg and the like have their own profits and net worths as the number one priority. If that means sucking up to Trump, that’s what they’ll do.

The crypto president. What a shit show this is. The american president openly scams people and he is applauded by it. The greater fool theory is alive and well. In a about 4 years people will see that btc and all other crypto is a massive hoax

Mainly because he's going to be a one term president on the peripheral of a Dictatorship but has basically a mandate to do whatever the hell he wants mostly without repercussion as he won't be up for re-election, normally these idiots would sit on the fence as not to rock the apple cart but right now it's a free for all and it's all 2028 problems for the next guy

I go back to the NYT article published the day after the election (something like "this is what America is and we have to come to terms with it"). It's not what America is, (America is not Trump), but the divisions are obviously very real. Also, does anyone have the time to go through what happened the first time? Every single day some sensationalist media article. It was a crazy presidency but the media reaction was even more mental.

They learned that blowing Trump up is what got him elected so they didn't (the legacy press) do that to the same degree this election as they did in 2016. They may now be learning not to blow up every event, too, and feed the divisions. Probably a strategy of "wait" and choose battles all the while looking four years down the road (and two for the other set of election/house whatever).

After Trump is the more interesting of the debate space. Who fills the GOP gap? The Dems cannot presumably run on "he's evil, just vote for us to keep him out" so there's reinvention there, too. I.e., it cannot (2028) surely be titled a "battle for democracy" like the last 3 elections were.

Unless someone more insane (from the typical politicking viewpoint -- unorthodox and potentially dangerous) than Trump takes the nomination which might happen depending on where that nation is in four years (it will be a contest for the rebuilding of the GOP regardless imo next time out). Does Trump 2.0 (whomever courts that base) win the war? No one knows, and completely speculative for years to come, but that that will happen is obvious imo.

Hate what this fecker has done to the world. Walking through Dublin city centre today and there were 3 lads waving a huge trump flag and shouting abuse at people
