First, he was quoting the Wall Street Journal there. Second, it doesn't call him dumb but his plans (it even actually days Trump his clever, as did Trudeau). And third - regardless of everything else, what can Canada still do? Kissing Trump's ass and meeting his demands hasn't worked, and the demands are anyway clearly just a pretext because of USMCA requirements. (I'm surprised Trump cares about providing a pretext, but it is what it is.)
The correct approach now is to take the gloves off and make the tariffs hurt the US. Only that can now produce the sort of pressure required to make Trump back off.

Should be enough to ensure the GOP never wins another presidential election or control either house of congress.
And would make way for Puerto Rico and DC to become states adding another 4 senators and a few more congressmen.

Yes, Trump will definitely manage to coordinate a massive realignment of the economy and public finances, while communicating a clear message to the population. And he will definitely keep both the House and Senate, if he tries this.
