The Trump Presidency - Part 2

I dont see how any of that points to Putin having a kompromat on Trump.

Like... how? I don't understand. Are you suggesting Trump just wants to dismantle the USA's military, power and influence around the world, handing everything over to China & Russia off his own back? it doesn't necessarily have to be because Russia has something on him?

Well in his first term he increased military spending, by a massive amount, so what's changed? At least if spending is cut he'll not see the USS Donald J Trump sailing the ocean

You indeed do not understand. It doesn't matter if Putin "has something". Nobody will care.Apart from a few I-told-you-soes on twitter and the interwebs . It would have possibly mattered before his reelection. Now it's far too late.

And he ran on isolationist policy the first time around, remember? It's nothing new, and these days he's obsessed with cost cutting at the federal level it would seem.

Trump says a lot of shit so who knows but if he ends up trying to cut the military in half then I'll believe the conspiracy

Maybe a stupid question. Is the US gonna be in some grave danger if they cut the military budget by half?
Isn't US military budget 5 or 6 times China or something?

Ok... I think I follow then, I just disagree. A great many Americans still think he at least cares about America.

No, but the stock portfolios of the majority of politicians and the ultra rich will be in grave danger.

Says it all really.

It would be so easy for this administration to be what most their supporters seem to think they are and play up to that persona. So so easy to actually show strength and help Ukraine finish the job and put an end to Putins Russia. Up supplies, seize the funds, tell Putins army to feck off home or be annihilated. Actually be a gloves off “tell it like it is” tough guy and have something legit for Trumps ego rather than non-stop bullshit.

But no, when it comes to Russia it’s nothing but capitulation.

If he literally halves the budget that's I-dont-know-how-many hundreds of thousands of people unemployed . I don't even think you can terminate their contracts in such a way. Doubt it will ever happen.

We knew it would be a shit show but the sheer pace and scale of his lunacy is worse than even I expected (and I expected it to be very bad indeed).

Almost impressive that he and First Lady Musk have moved miles ahead of the nearest competitor in the "enemy of the world" competition in such a short time.

So, if this is just the norm of politics in the US now, could China overtake US as the main trading partner with Europe, in the long term? Just diversify to multiple countries, at least.

Europe shouldn't rely too much on any given country, but its not exactly a continent full of natural resources, China is not a very trustworthy country, but they do offer stability, nobody knows what the feck the US will do anymore, between any given administration, and stability matters.

This is the USA, workers have virtually no employment rights

I wonder if he has signed a Presidential order preventing the Cats and Dogs from being eaten?

Of all the batshit crazyness is stuns me that the US can elect someone who raised this as a "genuine" point in a presidential debate. WTF were you thinking USA?

We weren’t. Our electorate is selfish and lazy, but most of all mis-, or un- informed. The large majority of the country is blissfully complicit.

The Dems will make the US all gay and unchristian. Trump saves!!! Not that hard to understand, huh?

China is already by some distance the largest trading partner of the EU.

If there is some three-way deal that really lowers the number of nukes, and lowers the military budget for all three countries, and is actually respected, that would actually be very good.

How is it going to lower the number of nukes?

How is it going to lower the number of nukes?
Same as how the previous treaties between the US and Russia were made which contributed to lower the number of nukes from tens of thousands each to a few thousands each.

Always confuses me why this is of any relevance when all sides still have more than enough to kill us all 50 times over whilst still spending billions on developing hypersonic delivery systems.

I don’t get why they need all those nukes anyway. It only takes a few to cause irreversible damage, there’s little difference between having 200 and having 6000.

Not in the twisted minds of those who think a nuclear war could be "won".

Hegseth looks like a deer in the headlights here. I recall reading that if the DoD were a company, it would be one of the largest and most complex organisations in the world (annual budget bigger than the annual revenues of Apple/Amazon etc, 2.9 million employees, operating in 160 countries) - it is almost as though one could have predicted that a TV presenter with no experience of running anything would be woefully inadequate for the role.

can someone help me understand the rationale behind raising tariffs and starting a trade war? The economy is doing well globally, this sounds to me will set the entire world back.

That's why JFK hired McNamara for the job. DoD was already getting enormous back then and they needed systematic organisational approach .

Tariffs will make importing less profitable, thus incentivizing domestic production and strengthen American industry. In theory. In practice it's probably just going to lead to higher prices for everyone.

Tariffs aren't completely unprecedented, though. Many countries do have tariffs. It's just the trade war aspect here which is particularly counterproductive.
