What is often forgotten is that to be guilty of obstruction of justice, you don't actually have to be successful in obstructing. You just have to attempt to obstruct, which is sufficient to be found guilty. If Trump asked Sessions and Priebus to leave the room before talking to Comey and then asked him to drop the investigation, then he's toast.

Am I right in thinking:

  • Nixon was going to be impeached for obstruction of justice.
  • Precedent set: Obstruction of justice = impeachment.
  • Precedent set = case law.
  • Therefore if Trump has obstructed justice that is an offence carrying the punishment of impeachment.

Or will Nixon's resignation and subsequent pardon mean that it never got far enough for it to now be considered "case law"?

All you have to do for impeachment is "treason, bribery, or high crimes and misdemeanors". There doesn't have to be precedent for it in regards to impeachment, the House just needs to want to prove you did it, and the Senate just needs to want to convict you.

Andrew Johnson was impeached for violating the Tenure of Office Act (he wanted it challenged in SCOTUS as unconstitutional - in 1926 it was declared an invalid law), while Bill Clinton was impeached for purgery.

"High crimes and misdemeanors" is meant as a very broad term applying to 1) crimes committed unique to elected or appointed office (high crimes) and 2) crimes that can also be committed by ordinary individuals (misdemeanors)

Raoul, brother, you must have a much higher opinion of this modern-day incarnation of the GOP than I do to actually believe that Ryan and McConnell will actually go through with impeachment, regardless of what the investigation turns up. Trump will dismiss it as fake news in one of his tweets, his party will play along (albeit with McCain and Graham expressing how "troubled" they are over everything), and then eventually the media will move on to the next outrage stemming from the White House.

I hope I'm wrong. But I pretty much know I'm not.

They'll have to pick sides in a year or so before another GOP candidate starts gearing up for a campaign as I don't think Trump is guaranteed a nomination for 2020. They probably don't want to leave it to chance with the primaries again so it might be easier to let Pence ride it out a year or so and get a new establishment friendly candidate going by time for the next election.

The establishment GOP has no say over the candidate anymore, as evidenced by Jeb! dismal run. If the base want Trump, they'll get Trump, and the hand wringing will continue. And for all we know, the base does want Trump.

Case law has nothing to do with impeachment.

And given the current political climate, it wouldn't happen until 2019 at the earliest.

So the list of people he's pissed off just keeps getting longer and longer. How much longer will we all have to endure this ridiculous and very dangerous farce of a presidency?

Sure but if they don't have that option, the base will just gravitate to the next snake oil salesmen.

My money is on Trump declining a state visit to London until he feels the City is safe and that London does something to stop Radical Islam.

In fact I might just tweet him so as to put it in his head

We could have a tweets only Trump pesidency thread and it would be as active as the transfer tweets one. That's how spupid this all is.

Meanwhile, both our governments continue to get cosy with Saudi Arabia...

If anyone doubts Saudi Arabia's role in covertly funding terrorism then look up the Wikileaks leaked emails from Hillary Clinton.

I said to my partner as soon as the stories about Qatar popped up that it was obviously a ploy from Saudi Arabia (probably with our prior knowledge) to appear politically innocent. Pin it all on Qatar and watch the mainstream criticisms go away.
