That New York Times headline was just a disgrace to journalism. Mark Halperin is right when he calls NYT "The Onion". Say what you want, but if a Democrat went into a Presidential election with just a 2% chance of winning it and then won many red states that was not expected and then became president, NYT wouldn't have had a headline saying "Republican supporter in dismay etc". Newspapers must report news on the main pages without letting their bias show. Their opinion and bias must be confined to the opinion and editorial page.

Its funny how liberals have chosen to bury their heads in the sand and cry racism and sexism, instead of confronting the disastrous neoliberal economics pushed by the Clintons and Obama. Personally as someone who directly experienced a Clinton-backed regime change, I'm happy Americans chose not to unleash Hillary onto the world. I'm not holding my breath but hopefully Trump will do more of rebuilding America and less of policing the world like he said.

I am liking your optimism mate. Seriously. I hope so, I worry more on a Global scale though, and my biggest worry at the moment is definitely the Climate Change issue and the Paris Agreement.

I wouldn't be surprised if he reneged on all his extreme "views", climate change included. Now he's president he doesn't need to say stupid shit anymore and he will be more influenced by other leaders and advisors. We are seeing it already.

Better get a safety pin, Mel.

Did anyone watch The Circus on Showtime? Was it any good? I was wondering if it would be worth going back and watching something like that..

It's even worse than that. The NYT was Trump's biggest cheerleader throughout the campaign. I used to be a compulsive NYT reader (It literally sometimes took hours out of my day), but I had to stop in the primaries. While all the republican/conservative media was screaming about Trump (at the time) the New York Times made him look like a sensible candidate. At some point they were actively cheering him on to become the republican nominee while simultaneously flinging manure at Sanders. They portrayed him as the sensible business republican while Ted Cruz & Rubio were portrayed as religious extremists.

I'm fully aware that this will have me in the tinfoil hat brigade for many of you, however I seriously think the NYT actively worked towards the Trump nomination in order to rip him to pieces in the real election. At least that's what they thought they were doing...

Wasn't one of the email leaks saying this is exactly what they were doing?
It was suggested Hillary/Dems encouraged the media to support trump at first

That's a horrible sign and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Agreed. That is a bit OTT. Has any other prez election invoked so much outrage and protests before or is this a first?? Anyway, I think it's only going to get worse and Trump may well see some of his own followers turning on him as the backtracking comes into full effect.

I expect something similar in the UK in a few years when the reality of the Brexit decision hits home.

Yeah I saw that leak at the time too, but couldn't judge whether it was a real leak, or propaganda. I hope we'll get some really good investigative journalism into the entire Hillary & media story (and not the Breitbart type pls.), whether it really was limited to them "encouraging the media" and the exact ties they had to the NYT, GE, NEWS-Corp, Time Warner etc.

I mean think about it, not even FOX News was completely in his camp, he had some support from them, but plenty of their people said things like "he's not really a conservative" etc. They even aired an entire Michelle Obama speech (Something like 20-30mins) for Hillary without saying a negative thing at all, just stepping short of endorsing Hillary themselves while admiring Michelle.

I'm still not convinced of a huge media conspiracy against him (he was simply too erratic, offensive, divisive for them to get into his camp), but there's more than a kernel of truth in it.

Cheer up, at least we know that Trump will be able to wrestle the big issues of politics...

This is the President of America...

It's truly bizarre ain't it? Even discounting the fact he has no political experience AND is a royal shitehawk, doing embarrassing shit like this should be enough to make him unfit for presidency in most peoples minds

I know it's a Phyrric victory, but we can take some comfort in the fact that he is most likely going to completely embarrass himself numerous times during his presidency

So many people would have absolutely believed that he'd do every single thing he shouted about during the campaign. Wonder how they'll feel about it?
That's why it's such an awkward thing to have Trump as president. I highly doubt he gets a 2nd term with this behavior. (Maybe he doesn't want a 2nd term)

Well it means he won purely and unashamedly on the basis of lies. Which is better but not much. It means we've taken another large step into the realm of post-truth politics. We were already there on the frontier but this marches boldly into the centre of it and sticks a flag in the ground.

I hope what it means is his presidency will be a disaster. The left will still loathe him whatever he does while the right will feel betrayed. So he, and hopefully they Republicans, will see a huge backlash next time around. Whether it actually pans out like that is anyone's guess.

The man lies every three minutes .There is a website dedicated to his lies. The fact that he got his base turning against the media and the corrupt system , blinded them to all this.

Everyone to blame for twats like Trump 'except the people who vote for them'

PEOPLE who disagree with Donald Trump and Nigel Farage are responsible for their success rather than the gullible idiots who vote for them, the media have decided.

Commentators believe Trump’s victory and Brexit could have been avoided if everyone stopped having reasonable views and agreed with mad, barely coherent grievances.

Guardian columnist Donna Sheridan said: “If tolerant people had listened to mental Trump supporters they wouldn’t have voted for him due to some magical process I can’t explain.

“It’s the same with Brexit. We should have been saying, ‘There there, it’s not your fault you have to be racist because you haven’t got an amazing job and the Polish shop makes you angry.’

“Liberals like me may as well have marched Trump and Brexit supporters to the polling station and made them vote with a gun at the their head, but obviously we’d never do that because we’re too nice.”

Political pundit Tom Booker said: “We need to listen to ordinary people, even if it’s hard to work out what their point is except that all politicians are basically criminals and we won the war.”

I was thinking about something. Am I wrong in thinking that people made a mistake by looking at Latinos as a whole instead of taking into account that Trump mainly targetted mexicans, which means that for example Florida and its Cuban population got badly interpreted?
I'd say yes to some extent. Latinos might be important for DT in Florida, but toxic for him in Texas, I imagine. Christopher Hitchens had a terrible metaphor for this kind of situation : that of a lifeboat, with the chopped-off hands of others who wanted to get in still gripping the sides of the boat.

I still think people are failing to see the bigger picture here (globally).
People are hurting, they want change, they want instant change...
If B.Sanders had got the nomination, and/or J.Corbyn had followed his (publicised) instinct and gone against the 'establishment' properly and supported (and maybe eveb led) Brexit, then we'd be talking about the rising of the left.
The right (namely Farage and Trump) were in the right place at the right time and played a very smart game IMO. No point demonising them per se.

Wikileaks showed the collusion between the DNC/Clinton camp and the media, the policy to elevate Trump and later go after him was straight from the Clinton campaign. The plan this time blew in their faces

TRUMP: Let's get that Muslim band going!
"Band? We thought you said ban."
TRUMP: No way, that's harsh! Also, how's that Mexican mall going?
