It’s slavery 2019. Politicians disenfranchise the minorities. Police round them up on on misdemeanours, judges hand them a harsh sentence. They come out and can’t get work with a record so inevitably commit more minor crimes and get sent back to prison. Meanwhile the people who own the prison profit from their dirt cheap labor.
Meanwhile work dries up because the labor is sold cheap to private prisons and more people end up in desperate conditions which increases the chances of relying on crime to survive.
There should be an uprising against the people who create this situation but the people who should be uprising are intoxicated by the oppressors, drinking their koolaid directly from the Fox News teet.
I didn't realise just how recent a phenomenon it is. Incarceration rates in the states were fairly flat and standard up til the 80s, but have quadrupled since then, obviously almost exclusively to the detriment of non whites.
But something so recent could be reversed, one hopes.
What politician is going to reverse it and take a massive massive hit on unemployment rates?
If they elected a true ideologue like Bernie or Warren, it might be possible.
