All of his life he’s wheeled and dealed, slipped people money for favours, ripped people off, paid people off, broken the law etc, fiddled his finances and got away with it. As POTUS he fully expected to be able to do absolutely anything he wanted to do, without impunity. He is, after all, the most powerful person in the Western Hemisphere. In his mind he can do exactly what he wants. He believes he should be above the law.
Unfortunately things aren’t going quite according to plan. His usual manoeuvrings have resulted in folk accusing him of breaking the law. Then they threaten impeachment. I think he truly has trouble comprehending what is and isn’t against the law. I also think he has difficulty understanding why his lifelong habit of wheeling and dealing is not working when it has always worked before. But it isn’t working and he’s anxious, very anxious.
