That's a simplification, it was going to happen anyway simply because labour costs a lot more in developed countrie which means that industries with small margins due to relatively small added value. The issue is that they accelerated it while not creating a solid framework for the new structure mainly because it would have required investment that weren't in line with the small state ideology. At least that's my view.
That was exactly my point. They have just let the free market doing what it wanted.

As much as he is entirely despicable on many different levels he is completely consistent when it comes to outright lies.
I genuinely struggle to imagine a similar situation in the UK.
If (god forbid) someone like trump was elected here would things be different? Would like to think so but how easily he’s doing this in the us I don’t know.....
Parliamentary politics makes an all powerful leader almost impossible. He would have been removed long ago.

I believe he'd not get away with half the shite he's done but then again, Britain has Brexit which is honestly just as much of a national embarrasment as Trump in the US.

Trump does have a chunk of supporters in Britain (I imagine they're also Brexit backers too) If he was Prime Minister, he'd still have a min of 20-30% favourability.
Just as many dumb and despicable cnuts in the UK per 100000.

My local newspaper had this cartoon in the paper yesterday. Sad thing is this resonates with many people here. Propaganda at its finest. pathetic

Imagine only being valued by your family because of the money you make, otherwise you're a 'loser'...

How to keep stretching a lie, Trump Style

I mean, that’s brilliant. You have to admire the man. Every word he says in public is documented and he just keeps lying because he knows he’ll get away with it. I have family in NY that support him and I know if I showed them that video they’d claim he isn’t lying and each 401k story is a different real police officer.

If by admire you mean loathe with a complete lack of respect then I would agree. There is nothing to admire about a compulsive liar who bullies and gaslights people into going along with it. In fact, its the epitome of everything wrong with a post-modern leader.

yep. I'm in same boat.

NBC reporting Manafort has reached a Plea. Will come out in Court tomorrow.

let's get this Cnut out of white house ASAP

Trump is exactly the type of boss who'd take full advantage of outsourcing, if only he had something worth buying bar his name & the associated, laughable notion that his is a success story.

Something big is coming. This is designed distraction.

I really don't think so. He is impulsive and this is just him trying to defend himself for some of the bad press he's received over Puerto Rico in the past week.

Nah, Mueller seems to have wound down for the midterms.

HA!

I understand your plight. But you are cherry picking. You want to enjoy the benefits of an economic system without wanting the collateral damages.

The US is undergoing an economic restructuring and unfortunately, there are collateral damages including the dissemination of the manufacturing industries. The country has to move up the value chain and not compete against lower wage countries. Its comparative advantage. The fault lies in the Government is not re-training and providing 'landing strips' for those newly retained workers like the Coal miners.

Personally, I think the Internet has accelerated the changes. It enabled many companies to outsource, manage their supply chains remotely or on the Cloud. As like in your example, Apple with its ecosystem partners in China.
But hey-ho, without the Internet, we wouldn't be having an almost live dialogue on this topic.

All solutions from laws to technologies are double-edged swords. What they give, it will also take. But that's the reality of life.

That's a good post. Both Trump and Bernie do not understand that the manufacturing jobs aren't coming back. There is no way to "make America (American manufacturing and middle class wages) great again" as it was in the past by applying tariffs and forcing companies to bring the factories back. Producing goods in America will mean increasing inflation, which will in turn lead to the central bank increasing interest rates, which will lead to an economic slowdown.

I like Lizzy Warren's idea to bring about some parity much better, but unfortunately the chances of it passing are next to none.

He's playing the ultimate game of top Trumps (pun intended)..... Against himself

Even if the bill past could past, Warren is missing a basic factor - class power. From the article

Of course, this kind of huge transfer of economic power from rich shareholders to middle- and working-class employees would provoke fierce resistance.

For all the potentially issue of Bernie's plan, Sanders knows the only to get long last positive change in the US is through a huge mass of people getting together and pressuring the government and capitalists to accept change. A guarantee jobs programs(Which has it's problems)and union building are things which gives people a big stake in economy and a way to organise, all of this is the best way to form what essentially is a mass pressure group. Without this all you've got is at best work paper.

So, the Trump Presidency thread or the American economy thread?

I came here to read embarrassing tweets and laugh at a Cheeto.

World leaders need to come together and stop this guy.

Why is Macron even bringing the cnut??

Not everyone who works in Hollywood is a multi-millionaire actor, producer, director or studio executive. There are thousands of jobs that are firmly in the middle class. As an example: a friend of mine works as a production assistant after graduating from NYU Tisch (with student debt of more than $200K). She currently makes between $16 - $18 per hour, working on films for few months at a time, after which she becomes unemployed and has to find a new gig.

And people tend to forget that Hollywood, like every other industry, isn't isolated. The existence of Hollywood provides work to thousands of people that are not directly working for Hollywood, from restaurants to gardening/housekeeping companies.

As mentioned yesterday, the manufacturing jobs aren't coming back. We are not going to magically start building TVs when we can get them cheaper from elsewhere.
Just goes to show the huge con job that Trump has done on his voters when they’ll believe that crap about bringing back coal mines, manufacturing jobs etc
There’s a reason why every major consumer product manufacturer in the world goes to Asia and it’s not going to change in our lifetimes

:nervous: It is the 'who shrunk the middle classes?' thread.

Interesting as it is, I came in for the comical relief of the Trump Presidency.
