A 20 year old who scored double figures in the league in his first ever season as a midfielder and is on track to do the same again?

How often does a player like that come about?

His overall game isn't incredible by any means and he needs a lot of work still on a lot of things.

But the ability to find those spaces in the boxes, the instinct and his goalscoring ability (despite missing some absolute sitters) is not a common attribute.

Exactly so. Alli's tally for Spurs is already 17 goals and 12 assists in just 1.5 seasons. And he's only 20 years old.

whatever we may level at him at this point we can't accuse him of having no end product.

Took both his goals very well tonight.

Exactly. Alli has contributed 16 goals and 10 assists in 50 premier league matches. And he's 20.

As a comparison, Lampard didn't reach double figures in the league until his 10th season, Gerrard not until his 8th.

I'm not saying that he's the same type of player as those two or he's as good as blah blah. But its hardly surprising that an English sports channel would 'cream themselves' over an English player in an English team in the English league racking up stats not usually seen by players of his age in one of the better teams in the league.

What exactly are they allowed to get excited about?
How the hell did Lampard get so many goals in the PL if he only reached double digits in his 10th season?

Walker, Vertonghen and Dembele all suspended for Watford, no Lamela and probably Alderweireld as well.

Tough to have all 3 out at once, but better that it's against Watford than the following match against Chelsea.

Alderweireld was out with a virus, correct? If so, he could be ready to face Watford.

Started out young (made his debut for West Ham aged 18)

Also just realised I made a mistake in the calculations, it was his 9th season. Didn't realise his season on loan at Swansea wasn't a whole season.

But then more importantly, he had incredible consistency after that and once he got going, he scored double figures in the league every season for 10 seasons consecutively. A very impressive record.

Alderweireld has a back problem, I believe from what I heard earlier that he's struggling for both upcoming games.

Ridiculously stupid bookings from Dembele and Vertonghen (especially Jan). Really poor discipline for that.

We just have to hope Alderweirald is back for that match.

Agreed, they were both stupid yellows.

We're going to be on a tightrope for players getting another 2 games for hitting 10 before April as well. Rose is well in his way for that and quite a few others now.

Rose I expect tbh. He plays on the line, though its always controlled and the way he plays is always going to attract yellows. He'll probably get his 10th by Feb.

The Vertonghen one genuinely baffles me. We're 4-1 up, the ball isn't in a dangerous position. Why?

Mike Dean has refereed 3 Spurs games this season.

He's sent an oppo player off in each of those games and given Spurs 2 pens.

An absolute joke he's allowed to ref Spurs' games when he's so obviously in the past even celebrated their goals.

Very solid win. Didn't really look that secure before the red card though. They were playing a lot better last season imo, doesn't really mean much if they keep racking up them points though.

I know you will dislike this post and you will furiously disagree but Spurs is a selling club. That's a fact.

Alli is probably one of Englands most talanted young prospect, soon producing consistent enough to play for a top team. Chelsea, City or United have the money. Madrid and Barca has the prestige. PSG can buy your whole club if they want.

If he continue's to produce these numbers it's a matter of time before he will be gone. Estimated price range £60-90m depending on the buyer.

You will probably find all sorts of explanations, arguments and so on why this will not happened in your lifetime but history tells us something else. Bale. Modric. Berbatov. Carrick. Campbell. Just to mention a few.

So enjoy him when he's still yours. And btw if he stagnates you will keep him. A win and win so to speak.

The cnuts couldn't wait one more match to get their booking? :wenger:

The idiots didn't have to get suspended at all as our match against Watford is after the amnesty date and they therefore would not have missed the Chelsea match regardless of any bookings they may have picked up. Sigh.

We'll have to go into that match without 4, maybe 5 starting 11 players now. Silly.

They are a good team just lacking a particularly exciting player. I think they'll finish above Arsenal (and us) this season.

Not a chance. Spurs are a pretty good side, but they are sitting exactly where they should be according to their overall quality. And given that we've finally found our own, I can't say I'm particularly worried about them when it comes to the fight for a top four spot. They'll end sixth this season, and it'll be exactly what one would expect from their team.

Teams drift in and out of form throughout the season - we've hit some form now but will likely have dodgy patches at some point again, albeit nowhere near as dodgy as our poor form before this current run. If Spurs have found their optimum level and remain on course to what they're at right now, they'll finish the season with around 76 points. We'd need to produce consistently title contending form to get well into the 80s, so it's likely we'll be somewhere near them come the end of the season.

They're a very good side: probably the most defensively solid outside Chelsea, with a couple of midfield players in Eriksen and Alli who make regular contributions in goals/assists, and a terrific, consistent striker who consistently scores a lot. There's no reason they can't make a top four place.

Good call about the match being after the amnesty date, didn't think about that. Makes it especially unfortunate.

Trippier, Winks and Wimmer in then? I'm thinking Alderweireld is back for Watford. Poch said he had recovered from the back issue but came down with a virus a few days ago. I wouldn't be shocked to see a back three with Dier, Toby and Wimmer. Pretty sure that's what we played at their's last season.

Agree, and I'm fairly confident we will.

I generally agree with your assessment of this Spurs side as well, but I think they missed a beat not strengthening with one more top quality / match winning player in the summer (and I said as much in this thread when the season started, if I'm not mistaken). They are a bit too short on "star dust" (so to speak) compared to the other sides competing for fourth, which is why I don't think they'll get in there this season.

All clubs will sell if a situation arises. Man. United are no exception (pace Ronaldo, de Gea and others).

Spurs will sell a star player if (a) the player wants to leave; and (b) the buying club is outside the Prem; and (c) a huge sum is offered. Otherwise not. As I've said before Berbatov was the last star player sold to a Prem rival ... and that was donkey's years ago.

By the way, PSG could buy Spurs only if the current owners wished to sell ... not merely because PSG wished to buy. And with the new stadium complex well underway and Spurs soon to enter the top 10 globally income-wise, it's not likely that they'll be interested in selling anytime soon.

I'm not especially worried about Dembele's absence: I have every confidence in young Harry Winks, who looks to me like he's a real prospect. Walker and Vertonghen will be a big miss tho'.

Oh dear!

Let's start with the sending off's:

Januzzai in injury time for a 2nd yellow which should have been a straight red and no effect on the result.

Reid in the 96th minute for a 2bd yellow and no effect on the result.

Redmond despite some of you not knowing the rules was by the letter of the law 100% a sending off.

The penalties:

Son tripped in the West Ham game was 100% a penalty, even Bilic admitted it, plus he also gave a penalty to West Ham for holding from a corner.

The one last night I thought was outside the box and he shouldn't have given it, it should have been a free-kick IMHO but the sending off was spot on.

Plus he gives the most pens anyway, already 10 this season.

As for the celebrating goals, I'm not sure where we are going with the match officials bit. I'm all for constructive criticism and overall the officiating isn't good enough, but when people make stuff up to suit their agenda we are all heading down the Chelsea route of calling ref's racist etc if they don't like a decision that they give.

Mike Dean has given us one debatable penalty, that's it, and we missed it anyway.

Pochettino should tell his players to stop being so careless with challenges, and tackles.

Spurs are a very dirty team. I only really noticed it with that infamous game at Chelsea last season.

Pochettino has definitely drilled that aggression into them to get rid of the typical sort of Spurs pansy attitude.

There's a big difference to being a physical side to a dirty one, and this Spurs side is far from dirty. There are times where we certainly need to up our physicality levels but to cut out some of our needless dissent, like Verts and Dembele last night.

It was never a fecking red. Or a pen.

One thing you have to give credit to spurs and their manager is how they've incorporated consistency to their ethos. For as long as I have seen Spurs, they were always pansy and lackadaisical. Never had that strong will to build on good performances and go on a run. They'd win 2 and then slip up against some crap sides, play europa and proceed to lose next league game, get spanked at top sides away. Players and managers came and went with no real sense of what they wanted for themselves and club. Never tried to carve out a space amongst the big boys.

Poch's side however look quite different. You genuinely feel they've made that step up. Not bigging them up or saying they're due a title. But they do look the part. Last season saw inexperience and mental brittleness that impeded them. We'll have to wait and see how they go on about it this season.

Spurs side-stepped a huge banana skin last night. Then kicked it masterfully into a skip. Not only were they facing a determined Southampton side away but doing that after the pressure of knowing all the other results. The penalty/card made a difference obviously but I reckon Spurs would have won anyway the way they had their tails up.

I really liked Son's finish, that was as young Michael Owen as you get.

Spurs impressed with their energy and pace last night. Soton were the better team in the first 30 min or so but after that Spurs controlled the game. If Kane and Alli hit form, they'll get about 78 pts, IMO.

We've done really well to amass 36 points at this point because at no stage this season have we been really at it, I hope this is a positive sign that we've learned how to grind out some points.

Its keeping your nerve at the end of season part you have to hope you've got right this season. Being in close geographic vicinity to Arsenal leaves you (and has left you in the past) susceptible to bottleism.

Under the rules it's a definite red, but I agree it wasn't a penalty.

There wasn't enough intent to bring him down. It was more of a stumble that caused the foul.

The rules have changed this year to fouling with intent as last man.

Alli is a good player and they have enough reason to get excited about him,

I don think Spurs are a special side to be honest, very limited but immense physically, probably the most in the prem. Got found out in Europe and significantly worse than Chelsea, City, Liverpool. It's between us, Spurs, Arsenal for the 4th spot I reckon.

The fact is that they just play a dirty, careless style of play. It's a bit different from playing with passion. You can be passionate, but correct in the end.
