Is it really so inconceivable to think that the Spurs players were quite peeved after ending the season trophyless again? After such a hard fought season on their part, you could be excused for thinking that perhaps a reward for their efforts would be due.

Especially since the likes of Kane, Alli, Walker etc could earn practically twice what they are on now if they move to, say, Man United. With just as high a chance of winning a trophy.

Nice try mate! You double down by repeating an argument from an imagined reality.
Not biting. Sorry. ^^

"My dad is cuter than your dad!"
"Oh yeah? Well my dad is transitioning between looks at the moment, and he is so rich he can buy any beauty products he'd like. Soon he will be cuter than your dad!"
"Don't think it will help! My dad is young and will just be better looking next year!"
"Well...! Someone will soon buy YOUR dads beauty products, you were just lucky and bought them in a second hand shop, then he will go back to being ugly!!"
"He is not gonna sell our products to a rival model, and it will take a lot of money."
"Tsssk, he is about to build your new catwalk, he needs money. And despite his products being good, he won no awards!"
"He came second in the national competition!"
"...second."
"Well your dad came sixth!"
"So what? He won the Cheshire beauty competition."
"That no one care about!"
"And might win the European beaut..."
"That none of the best European models are even in"
"Still an award! what have your dad won? Nothing!"

I suppose that might make you feel better but the reality is clear, another season without a cup. And i know what i'm talking since my club is basically the same. What i do know is that every supporter celebrates a cup, remembers it in the clubs cv and will enjoy it far more than looking back at CL qualification and the respective group stage elimination the following year. Yeah ofc the money and prestige is good but not when you spend it on Sissoko or pull an Arsenal every year (or not even that if you don't get out of group stage).

Didn't really make me feel anything, I was just bored.

In any case, I'm happier with this season than the last time we won the league cup. Of course winning cups is great, but I wouldn't trade a smaller cup for such a convincing second place for it with 80 points after 36 games. Maybe if we were third, but still challenged and won a cup I'd be happier with, but not for a bad league campaign. Personal opinion perhaps. If we stagnate and don't really challenge, and end up 'top 4' for 10 years it's a completely different scenario than what is happening with us imo.

Buying Sissoko was stupid, we can all agree, but this was only made clearer because of how Harry Winks stepped up, if not we would have been in a bad situation without Dembele and no real cover.

If you wouldn't trade trophies over 2nd then that's personal preference however you'll find it hard for anyone to relate to that sentiment here as it's in United's culture to win things.

That's not a swipe by the way it's a fact.

We are very privileged that even in our worst period we are still able to bring trophies back to OT that some clubs haven't won for years.

I get what you're saying. I suppose you are partially right imo. Would i trade your league campaign for a League cup? No, i think you are right.

But i would definitely trade your second place for a FA cup/Europa League. As a season ticket owner, i love going to our national stadium and celebrating a portuguese cup win with my fellow supporters. Also is easier to deal with my rival club friends when we win something rather than just qualify to the CL (although it's obviously harder in England).

On the other hand it was great going to the Bernabéu in an European away where we were 5 mins away from a famous big game win. You can only find those in the CL. Even so i still prefer some silverware as we ended up going out in group stages like Spurs. It's great being in the CL but there's pratically zero chance of winning it in today's money oriented football. In the Europa League we have reached a final and a semi.

Maybe Spurs should try and take the EL more seriously instead of going out to Genk. United has 3 CL and a richer European competions history and did so. Chelsea won one. Silverware means more on historical terms and for supporters than the Top4 cup.

What I like about you is that you understand that Man Utd are in a privileged position and do not seek to ram that fact down people's throats. Something some of your fellow Utd posters sadly appear unable to do.

We all acknowledge Utd are a much bigger club than Spurs currently, with much bigger resources and a bigger history of success, yet some here unfortunately seem so incredibly insecure about all of that that if somebody dares to criticise or go against the general view, a torrent of abuse immediately follows like a small child throwing a tantrum. You guys support Utd, you should be proud of that - it's one of the great clubs. You guys do not need to be defensive - it's ok to have a chat with people who might not agree with you 100% without throwing insults or engaging in WUM'ing.

I can't understand that line of thinking either. When you look back in time, it's the finals, the trophies, the thrill of winning stuff that sticks out. Those are the moments that give the best highs and stick to the memory the most. When you're telling your kid about fond memories of the club, are you going to talk about the epic season where you won feck all but finished comfortably second?

Don't get me wrong, I understand the barometer of success is different for different clubs but even for smaller clubs, it's more likely epic derby wins or handing a thrashing to a much bigger club or a fantastic cup run isn't it? I mean, wouldn't say club X rather finish 15th and reach the FA Cup Semis than finish 12th?

I agree with you however you can understand how we can still be happy about our team showing progress and generally having a very good season in the league - that doesnt mean we can't also be disappointed at not getting to FA cup final (gutted) or our poor performances in the EL and Champions League (double gutting) - We have a lot to be happy with at the moment in the context of decades of mediocrity, we finally look close to becoming a team that could win silverware on a regular basis - that's the first time I could have said that with confidence in over 30 years of supporting Spurs. Am I happy with this season? Yes in the sense we have played well but I will look back with a lot of frustration and disappointment also because we should have won something imho. I have hope we will finally win something in the next year or two - if we don't then I'll be devastated and will look back on this period with regret and sadness.

Fair enough, guess it was more important for Spurs to have a convincing league campaign than somehow win a cup and finish outside the top 4. But I can understand that with United's pulling power you would value trophies more, despite a somewhat lackluster league campaign, I understand where you are coming from. I'm still sad we lost to Chelsea in the semi final, I thought we had a great chance, and beating Arsenal to the FA cup would have been the icing on the cake.

Good post, I think this sums up the general feeling of many spurs fans, optimistic, satisfied, but also disappointed of a lost opportunity.

Don't get me wrong if we don't win the EL the season will be a disaster and that's due to the CL qualification that comes with the trophy and possibility of missing out again.

It's a huge game for us and if we win JMs first season will be the best we have had post SAF.

I think you'll win something next season and hope you do. The group you have at the moment deserve it.

I do feel you are a way off in Europe mind and to win the league need one/two proven experienced winners. Who though I'm not sure. You'd have to change your policy and go for a late 20s early 30s star.

Yeah it is such a massive game for you guys - do you think Jose can recover as Utd manager if you lose the game?

That's not really true though. I've said before that a lot of Old school Reds value the Tommy Docherty years as their most enjoyable days following United even though there was only an FA Cup (stopping Liverpool winning the treble) and relegation happened.

If the game is all about trophies or challenging for trophies why do people passionately support small clubs and lower league clubs home and away?

We don't lift them and great memories aren't dependent on them. You can have stories to tell even when your team aren't doing well. Cult heroes, fan experiences, a sudden *relative* rise (Forest Green going from pub team to League 2) etc.

It's not a dig at anyone but I do think a section of our fanbase don't appreciate what they've experienced. The entitlement and arrogance is too much. It's typical of big club fans who are conditioned to think about glory and nothing else which is a shallow way of supporting your club.

A few weeks ago a reputable journo tweeted "fair play to the 6k arsenal fans who travelled up to Middlesbrough despite all they've had to go through in recent times" - all they've had to go through - what about the Boro fans who have to travel down everywhere resigned to relegation. A load of blinkered nonsense.

I think he will do and he has to. He won't be going anywhere in the summer.

I genuinely believe that this season has opened his eyes to alot of things within our squad. He's essentially taken over an individually strong international squad but as a collective a mismatch of 3 previous managers signings and philosophies. In view of that he's quickly realised the task at hand and tried to make us hard to beat this season and salvage what we can with the players he can trust.

I think that giving him a full summer, baring in mind coming to a new club during a major international tournament is never ideal, will benefit everyone.

We have to win the Europa first, which is not the foregone conclusion that many United fans believe it to be. Ajax may appear to be weaker on paper, but in a 1 off game such as the EL final anything can happen. With the reward being a place in the CL proper, I have no doubt that their players will be well up for the occasion. This is what worries me most of all, it wouldn't be the first time this season that certain United players were lacking commitment when it is needed most. We need 11 players fully prepared to give 101%, anything less could see us come home empty handed.

If/when Spurs do finally win a trophy worth celebrating, I think we'll find their attitude towards winning trophies drastically change over night. The players to no doubt.

Thats a great post mate. You have highlighted a very good point about being a football fan - as Ive said before I have been a Spurs fan for over 30 years and for the vast majority of that time we have been rubbish, like truely awful with very little to shout about yet I love my club and have fond memories even through those times of favorite players (Paul Walsh as an example) who maybe were not world beaters but who I loved all the same. I also support Northern Ireland which up until recently was basically the international equivalent of a league 2/non league team and I also look back fondly at my years following my country even when we were one of the worst teams in Europe. I think some fans have become spoilt and have forgotten (or have never known) what it is like to support a team that actually doesnt win every week or that has experienced years of low points - it's the lows that make the highs all the more exciting.

I was talking about taking the competition seriously. Regardless of winning it, United did so. And i really enjoyed it. Being a supporter of a club in a smaller league, i rate the Europa League. I liked seeing a club with United's stature taking it seriously.

We did take it seriously. Pochettino have also said it was even worse than losing in the CL long after it actually happened. I don't know why people keep on repeating that we threw the competition, it's just not true. We played our strongest team, conceded three goals with 3 shots on target and got an early red card.

I agree with all of that. Spurs have had a very good season imo. I just disagreed with the post stating he wouldn't take a lower league spot in exchange for a cup. If I was a Spurs fan, I'd take the FA Cup + 4th place over what you got.

Indeed.

I think the Europa gained in prestige significantly when the reward of the CL spot was introduced upon winning it. It gives the trophy more meaning, rather than it being just another aesthetic trophy. Plus the fact that we have never won it before will also be a nice touch :)

Did you miss the 2nd paragraph of my post? I didn't go into detail as it's not relevant to us or Spurs and thus not relevant to this thread but I still clearly stated it's different for different clubs.

Yeah, we have definitely been guilty of not taking it seriously in the past, this year though it wasn't for the lack of trying. We just couldn't get the ball in the net, Kane scored an own goal Alli got a red card and despite dominating all other aspects, they scored more goals than us. Good result for Genk indeed :)

It was kinda like when we eliminated Mancini's City in the EL. An element of luck and a good effort.
