@Varun

Everton took Lookman. I've reluctantly decided to skip. There's one pick that might have been worth the gamble but I need younger players. Draft over.

If you look at the list from 2010 I think you’ll be fine. Most of the players unfortunately drop off massively it’s actually shocking to see how many were considered best of the best who now are playing in China/ Saudi Arabia or other lesser leagues

Personally, I feel the early 20s age group is the one where you want to top the list. Barely 20% of these teenage kids will make it.

I think the only player I've ever won that you (possibly) also bid on was Dest.

At least you've got three players there.
true but with Haaland gone, Karim is heir apparent to starting at Salzburg now and bound to rise if he does well

Don't think i bid on Dest.
Okay, so reduce that down to zero. Wasn't sure whether you had bid on him or just had him shortlisted at the time I bid. Got a vague recollection of there being two or three teams that either shortlisted him or bid on him. Guessing three teams shortlisted and I was the only one who bid, resulting in me actually winning a transfer.

A very rough way I look at it is based on progression at ages. Not just rating wise but how are they physically.

Like is the player using a physical advantage over a technical one for them to be considered promising. A good example was Renato Sanches a good player but one who used his physique from a young age more so than technique yet was tipped to be the next big thing. IMO more importantly is are they mentally mature in terms of decision making which tends to be the bigger signpost of quality at a younger age. Are they making decisions that are appropriate for the situation or position and sometimes this could mean a number 10 who doesn’t complete lots of passes but tries a lot of creative ones and you can see the brain working and that generally separates the potential to be very good to the capped at 90 style players.

I’m a terrible judge of young CBs for this exact reason it’s much harder to see the defensive brain in action which is why when you see someone like Virgil Van Dijk it’s so impressive!

It’s impossible to know a lots about all the leagues so I mainly look at ones like Belgium, France and Netherlands closely as there is so much more data for Spain, England, Italy and Germany it’s easier to be a lazy scout for them.

One thing I’ve noticed since playing SM though is the pathway a lot of players take so an above average player at youth level seems to fit into these pathways with flexibility as to when they start playing regular football.

16/17 78+
18 83+
19 85+
20 87+
21 88+
23 90+

So essentially IMO if you have a player in those ages at those ratings or above they historically are above average for that age group and more often then not end up 90 rated or above at some point in their careers injuries permitting.

The lower down the age group you go the harder this is to predict but I completely agree with you I would much rather be on top in the early 20 -23 age group as these players are already putting in quality performances and are about to enter their more physically capable years. I think after 23 it becomes a lot more obvious if a player is going to be 92+ (which is what I’d consider to be a very good player who is pretty much fulfilling potential)
90/91 Quality first team player (Top 50 players in that position)
92/3 Top quality (Top 20 players in position)
94+ World Class (Top 10 players in position)
