The relative strength of the Premier League

Tonight's result doesn't mean much, Sevilla are obviously a better side than Leicester despite what happened tonight.

I already started laughing at my friends who support Real/Barca/Atletico. 15th team in England walking over 3rd in Spain. Let us enjoy the moment, lately English football was humiliated too many times

Fair enough :D

not sure they are. Mock as we may, Leicester won the PL and just beat Seville over 2 legs.

Leicester did an amazing job, and are an underrated team. I've seen a lot of Sevilla this season though and imo I think they're comfortably the better side, despite what happened tonight.

Evidence does not support your thinking at all.

Shouldn't be overlooked that Sevilla were tired after a difficult weekend league fixture while Leicester rested.

Also, cup games do not matter. At least until it's English teams winning them, then they do matter.

Eh?

Sevilla rested 8 players last weekend.

Well its funny how people can distort results. When we lost to Bilbao, no one said the 7th best team were better than the 1st in England. We still claimed to be better. The lesser team can win games over two legs, its happened season after season.

It's all good. This is Leicester. The Premier League Champions. Their form right now does not represent the form they were in before Ranieri's sacking.

I believe it's Twigg who used to dismiss CL games because they're one off games that you can't fairly judge sides off, mainly when PL teams were doing terrible in the CL.

Such a ... weird coincidence that he bumps it after a PL team win.

Spain has 3 teams in the QF's (as if Neverkusen is going to knock out Atletico) and if City goes through England will have 2 teams in the QF's. And my bet is on the 3 Spanish teams to beat both Leicester and Man City anyway. This is a nice victory for the PL but Spain are still winning the war. (inner poet came out)

The Jupiler league is great by the way.

I'm not comparing them solely with regards to this tie (I thought Leicester would win) but how they've both performed over the season. Knockout football isn't the best barometer when it comes to comparing teams.

Sevilla are a very good side, it wasn't down to luck that they've won the last 3 europas and are currently third in La Liga, ahead of Athletico. Do you think Leicester would be third in La Liga, or that Sevilla would be 15th in the premiership?

Perfect time to play Sevilla, tbh.

They've looked leggy in recent weeks, an unconvincing win over Athletic at home and two scrappy draws against Alaves and Leganes have ruined their title chances.

Kind of reminds me of Spurs' run to the QFs in 2011, where they topped a mediocre group and beat a poor Milan side before getting smashed by Real.

Hmm. If they are so good, why did you 'expect' Leicester to win?

Why do you think they were so rubbish this evening? They looked very very average.

A couple reasons, in recent weeks Sevilla have dropped their level, Leicester have risen to the occasion in the CL which included topping their group, but more because I think Sevilla are good opponents for Leicester. Sevilla would always dominate the ball, allowing Leicester to sit back and hit them on the counter with some of their frightening pace. Dropping deep would also suit the CB partnership of Huth and Morgan, as while on the ground they have flaws, both are almost imperious in the air.

Sevilla are usually much better than what they've shown, I think tonight they started to panic far too early, and ended up pointlessly putting crosses in. Leicester, while good value for their win, also rode their luck a little (two missed penalties, hit the woodwork three times).

Interesting and good points! Thanks for explaining.

I believe that England have "won" the last three head to heads V Spanish sides in a two legged tie.

Since you lot take such stock in that it seems pertinent to bump.

Especially since England's fifteenth best beat Spain's third. and this whole thread was about the quality in the league from top to bottom.

Heh...Leicester winning is always fantastic but doing at the expense of a La Liga team is that extra bit satisfying given the annoying narrative surrounding La Liga.

I actually think we're going to see a resurgence by English clubs in Europe over the next two year. Chelsea are one the strongest teams in Europe already. Hopefully United will be revitalized next year, City will only strengthen and, who knows, Arsenal without Wenger might actually do better in Europe.

In terms of individual player quality I think the Premier League wins out, as well as the teams top to bottom quality(our 1-20 teams seem to be better than other leagues top flight). Other than that we arent better than la liga. I guess it depends on how you define "strength". The Real/Barca/Bayern train is just too much power right now for any English teams to do well in UCL

I don't think the result means much in the grand scheme of things. Leicester getting a fluke win has been the story of the last 18 months, and as someone else mentioned above it was the perfect time to play them. La Liga is still the stronger league and will stay that way until the Messi/CR7 era of dominance is finished.

What was the most impressive English side CL knock out result prior to Leicester's win over Sevilla?

Seems like the most impressive for a while but maybe I'm missing something.

I don't really know when the last one was. I just think the fact it's three victories in a row for head to head in the knockout stages is quite significant (if that is true like I imagine)

As well as City beating Barce early in the season.

Leicester would have won La liga, comfortably.:)

Not to sure about this one. They didn't win by luck yesterday, they were the better side.
So? Weird result. It can happen.
Nothing weird about it. Facing Leicester now and you're not facing a relegation threatened side, you're facing the defending champions of the premier league.

Didn't you argue that results don't matter? Or was it before an English team beat a Spanish team in CL for the first time in about 4 years?

What about Barca beating City 4-0? Or Bayern destroying England's third best team 10-2? Or Tottenham first being knocked out by an average German team then by an average Belgian team? Or West Ham being knocked out by a heavily struggling Romanian team two years in a row?

Oh I forgot, that does not count. It only counts when it's an English team winning.

And it's not three victories in a row BTW. Sevilla beat Liverpool in last year's Europa League final which was the last knockout meeting between English and Spanish team before this one. Liverpool did beat Villarreal before that (which you madly celebrated).
