Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Carlitos Way

One of my all time favourite movies since watching it with my dad as a kid. From the moment he goes back to the club for his money it's just absolutely brilliant. The chase scene contains such tension and then the end :(

Pacino's best movie for me and I adore Scent Of A Woman too.

Feck Benny Blanco

IMO is far superior to Scarface. Gonna have to go 10/10

I watched Godfather 1 and 2 the other day, actually didn't realise it was Diane Keaton until the end of the 2nd one

Not much of a fan of her myself, but then I do hate Annie Hall

Morgan (2016)

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Good to know. I really liked the few teasers I saw for it and it looked really promising. Looking forward to this and girl with all the gifts.

Yeah The Girl With All The Gifts looks really good. And The Magnificent Seven.

Guardians of The Galaxy - Decent Marvel sci-fi action flick that tries too hard to be funny at the same time. Good effects though. 5.8/10

The Lobster Promising (billed as) absurdist comedy-drama relating to societies attitudes to being married/single. I enjoyed the first third or even more, where there was quite a bit to like, but I was over it well before the end - far too long at just about 2 hours. It had pretty much run out of ideas by half way I think. So worth a watch if you like art house films but it is fairly hard going after a while.6.5/10

The Nice Guys It started well but failed to be anywhere near funny enough for a comedy and simply parodying 70's buddy cop movies isn't nearly enough to carry a film. Disappointing. 6/10

Bill Fictional comedy take on William Shakespeare's start in showbiz. Despite being aimed at a family audience (although to be fair family films in my day didn't include anal probe/torture devices) this works very well and is very funny at times and consistently funny. Many nods to Blackadder and particularly Monty Python style comedy but stronger for it. Lots of fun - watch it. 8.5/10

War Dogs - I really liked it. A good story that's told with the right mix of funny, obnoxiousness and absurdity.

Plus, Ana de Armas is a distractingly attractive woman.

Its basically a feature length Horrible Histories spin off. So if you enjoyed that humour, there's a whole 5 series 'family' show to work your way though.

That crew is great, tbf, they've also done a fantasy puppet show called Yonderland. I'm surprised more wasn't made of Bill when it was released here, because they're very well liked and pop up in a lot of things.

I was reading some of the reviews here of Tropic Thunder and I was surprised. Quite a lot of people didn't like it, I absolutely loved it.

Robert Downy Jr. is genius and this scene:

is freaking hilarious

Also this:

is brilliant (Tom Cruise is freaking immense in this - actually, all the cast members are very good).

There are so many brilliant moments and I found this film very funny

Just watched Unbreakable:

Very slow paced film and I was slightly bored at times, but the premise did keep me very interesting and the acting on the whole is very good.

M. Night has some of the most weird camera work I've ever seen though

I'd probably give it a 6/10 because it was so slowly paced (which I didn't really enjoy) but I would recommend watching it as its a very intriguing film. It's in no way a bad film

Sadly, I watched this after I knew about the reveal - its practically impossible to not know about the reveal if you know about M. Night and have read enough about movies

Ivan's Childhood

Second venture into Tarkovsky. Found this one a lot more accessible and easier to follow than Mirror, whilst still being a great watch with some great shots/scenes and all the artsy dream sequences and that. Tarkovsky's movie just have such a dreamlike feeling to them in general.

That well scene is just so effortlessly good.

Ben Hur - watch in 3D if possible.

moderate re-telling of one of cinema's oldest classic stories. It is set during the time of Jesus and provides an accurate and detailed setting for that era.

But of course this version uses the very best stuntmen, the latest digital technologies and some mind blowing VDO work. All of this combines for a brilliant chariot race and the crucifixion scenes.

Sadly the casting of Ben Hur is not great as the actor he plays his is not broody or vengeful enough and that let's down the story telling.

still I enjoyed it - will go home and now re-watch the original!

6/10

Yeah it was excellent. What did you think the meaning of the extra subplot with the soldier making his advances on that girl was? It seemed almost out of place but it was quite well done and had plenty of tension.

I was guessing something to do with corruption of innocence maybe since the lieutenant wants to send her away so she's unharmed by war if I remember correctly but I wasn't completely sure.

Hangman
A family's home is broken into and once they report it and try to go back to normal, things take a turn for the worst as the intruder is living in their attic and watching their every move. Told through 'surveillance' style found footage, the film was stupid and boring. The intruder takes so many risks, e.g. standing in front of their bed watching them sleep and keeps getting away without being caught... there were one or two decent creepy scenes and the idea is quite good as it could easily happen in real life but the film is just too boring. Wasted potential 4/10

You reviews are pretty much always spot on, I have this sat on HDD.

It's been a while since I saw it but I imagine it's something along the lines of that.

I think this shot says a lot.

Yeah, fair point. As I say I liked the subplot but it seemed to come and go in the middle out of nowhere.

I'm thinking seeing as it was his first film he might have felt the need to include a romantic subplot or was simply pressured to do it, he never included anything similar in his following films.

One More Time with Feeling - a profound portrait of an artist and a father dealing with a great loss. Andrew Dominik directs Nick Cave in 3-D black and white through the recording of his new album but it turns into deeper discussions about trauma and grief. A pretty incredible film with some great music too. I

Batman Forever - No idea what was going on, everything was happening, all things were strange, but thats what you expect from a Tim Burton movie I guess, and it was pretty dark.

Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman/Selina Kyle was very very sexy though and Keaton was also good.

5/10 (rating is probably a bit skewed because I watched it at about 3 o'clock in the night and was probably a bit tired)

What an absolute legend of a movie. Some of Carpenters finest work along with the all time classic "They Live!" and "The Thing". This is a movie I can rewatch and rewatch time and time again, so much better than "Escape from New York" which I never fancied all that much. EFNY is enough to rewatch once every 10th year, BTILC is a once each year happening for me. Carpenter basically made Kurt Russel. And the soundtrack is just

Carpenter sure was the king of the 80's \ 90's for me. Vampires was his last half decent work though.

9/10

Watched two films today.

Coherence - Really, really enjoyed this. Intelligent, low budget sci-fi, with a very well laid out story and plenty of unexpected turns. I think I watched this in part because of similar recommendations on the caf, but if it sounds up your street, please try to avoid reading absolutely anything about it. Was surprised to see that the writer/ director seems to have done nothing since it came out?

Neon Demon - Ugh. This was absolutely awful.

Possibly...although it felt more creepy than romantic in a sense.

Coherence is quality, and the Swedish lead actress

We had a whole discussion on Coherence and similar and comparable movies in this thread some time ago, do a thread search for Coherence and you will probably find it. Some true gems there.

Love this film , not seen it in a long while, must watch it again soon.

Okay. You people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we're not back by dawn... call the president.

They Live is a cult film.

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

In fact all the films you said are top notch.

In fact that bubblegum quote is exactly the reason why I first watched this movie aged 10. I played Duke Nukem and my brother remarked that they had stole his bubblegum remark from BTILC. I quickly got him to rent BTILC for me and a lovestory was born. I had watched all of Carpenters work when I was 11 years of age. Stuff you watch that young just sits with you.

IMO the feel and tone from those movies can never be recreated in this day and age. The same way Nightmare on Elm Street, Chucky and the likes never can be recreated.

80\90's was the golden age of entertainment.

Also that 7 minutes or so fight scene in They Live! is just magnificent. Probably one of the most entertaining fight scenes ever caught on film. I read that they just let the camera roll and allowed the actors to improvise as they felt like during the shoot.
