Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Sicario relies too much on those action scenes IMO because the rest of the movie is a bit dull.

I absolutely loved Sicario. Del Toro is an animal, one of the most charismatic actors of this modern era.

Anyone see Don't Breathe yet? Loved it! Not really scary but tense and a good watch.

I watched The Tunnel yesterday, a Korean film about a guy who gets trapped in his car when a tunnel collapses. Extremely well shot and tense with lots of barbs at the Korean government and very funny at places (one line at the end had me laughing out loud in surprise) and one of the best dogs in a film.

8/10

I agree - the tension scenes are very well made (the highway one especially), but all the rest is just meh, except for Del Toro who is excellent. The scenario was a bit stupid also.

First new films of the year I've seen and they were both pretty top drawer. Promising...

A Bigger Splash
- Brilliant. I thought Guadagnino's earlier movie with Tilda Swinton 'I Am Love' had flashes of brilliance but fell a bit flat, this one though was the real deal. Popol Vuh's Aguirre score popping up at times was the icing on the cake.

Julieta
- A new dose of Almodovar melodrama is always nice, it's been a while. It's not among his best works but it was still a rich and engaging one. He's such a master at what he does, he could probably take any old story and make it sumptuous and interesting.

Enjoyed A Bigger Splash as well. Fiennes was maddeningly good in it, wasn´t he. Interesting how Giadagnino brings back that decadent existential European bourgeois schtick from the 60s and 70s of the likes of the original La Piscine and Antonioni´s L´Aventurra and molds it into a modern setting. Enjoyed the work of that Belgian actor geezer from that Bullhead movie as well. Swinton, as always, was brilliant.

Agreed. There was both something old school and modern about it, loose and meandering yet articulate and never dull.

You've just sold me on it. Almost missed it completely.

Bastille Day
An action-crime thriller starring Idris Elba and Rob Stark about a terrorist bomb that goes off in France, which Rob Stark is accused of. He then works with Elba to clear his name and get to the bottom of who did it. Isn't the best film ever, doesn't really tread new ground but there's some great action and thief scenes and Idris Elba shines as a CIA agent. There are worst ways to waste away a Sunday evening 6/10

Occulus - Not a terrible horror movie, with a decent enough premise, but it's then severly hampered by poor acting from it's two adult leads, and a lead character who is a terrible person, and makes really stupid decisions... now I know Horror films are all about people making dumb decisions, but this one took it a tiny bit too far. Still, I thought all the flashbacks were fairly well done, and there's a decent enough creep factor about it all to keep me entertained(ish)

Dope - I liked it quite a bit. It has its flaws, and is a bit of a mess at times, but it's got enough fun about it to make me look past all that... and it's got a really likeable cast too. Certified Dope.

Matthias Schoenaerts? He's superb, I've seen him in a few films, and he's great in all of them. Really good in The Drop alongside Tom Hardy.

I was gonna add I loved the theme of the Stone´s Emotional Rescue and Fiennes´pool dance to it was brilliant. Weird Stones song of their last album that was even remotely listenable to. Had the song stuck in my head for a few days after seeing the film.

Jason Bourne

Rubbish, they are basically trying to stretch out this franchise and make as much money from it as they can. Robert Ludlum who wrote the original trilogy passed away in 2001, there are approx between 300-500 million printed copies of this trilogy in circulation. Whoever received the baton to continue with the late Ludlum's "Bourne" creation had an unenviable task and it shows in the plot mediocrity of the latter two films.

4/10

Conjuring 2

Fantastic movie, obviously they take a story and make additions but that doesn't take from the movie. The scare factor is shocking in this one, I actually think the first movie is one of the scariest films I've ever seen.

Brilliant movie, bring on three.

Morgan (2016)

Seen this at Odeon Cinema today. Well I went into this not knowing what to expect but I thought any movie featuring the ever-gorgeous Kate Mara, Rose Leslie, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michelle Yeoh has to be a winner. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this movie though the first half dragged a little. This movie is a hybrid of Hanna, Ex-Machina and The Machine. Miles better than Hanna but not as cerebral as Ex-Machina. Without giving anything away, there's a nice twist at the end though some might catch on if they pay attention. The body count was most satisfying too. The film was relatively short but just about right but that was probably due to not investing enough in the characters. Nice to see Kate Mara doing something slightly different. This is a film that I'll probably enjoy more at second viewing.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Central Intelligence

Considering I like the likes of Ride Along, thought I might like this. But this is probably the worst film I've ever seen, awful -100/100

Fast Times At Ridgemont High

I saw some kind of video referring to this movie on youtube yesterday, I had literally no idea what it was and had never heard of it surprisingly, but as I soon as I saw Sean Penn as the character he plays in the movie I instantly wanted to watch it.

I've always loved Ferris Bueller since I first watched it as an 8 year old but I watched FTARH last night and I think it's the best 80's movie. Those scenes with Sean Penn in the classroom with the teacher were gold

Also, Linda

9/10

Will give Ride Along 1 and 2 a shot. I watched Central Intelligence and would give it a 3/10, chuckled a few times, that was probably all.

I had the biggest crush on Phoebe Cates as a kid because of Drop Dead Fred. When I saw Fast Times at about 13 needless to say,:drool::drool:.

I started watching Now You See Me 2 tonight. Shite. Didn't even get half way.

Bourne was even worse. Quit 20 mins in.

Bollocks/10 for both.

Bite
A woman and her friends go to Costa Rica and she gets bitten by an unknown bug. Once she returns home, the bite infects her and starts turning her into a hideous monster. I am not too into body horror films but have enjoyed a few (e.g. The Fly or Starry Eyes). This however is not very good. Plot was pretty much non-existent, the acting was really bad and the film was just boring. There were some awesome effects and I think most of them were practical so that's nice to see but this is all style over substance 3/10

I found Central Intelligence to be quite watchable. Watched it in the theaters so also laughed at some of the average jokes just because of the atmosphere but still thought it was a decent film overall.

Sausage Party (2016)

Seen this at Odeon Cinema today. Finished my meeting early which just happened to be next to the Odeon so having my Limitless card in hand, thought I'd give this a whirl. What an absolute crock! Definitely an adult animation but one that tried too hard. It just felt like just because this was intended to be an adult animated movie, they could put whatever they liked in there just for the shock value. It didn't work. I think if this was given the South Park treatment, it would have been a lot funnier and more clever, witty with the gags. There were some clever moments like the homage to Saving Private Ryan and the play on food puns. The ending was a bit OTT but even so, I don't think I laughed once and barely managed to raise a smile a couple of times during the movie. It might appeal to some but seriously dudes, this is absolute rubbish.

I'm giving this a 4/10.

Quite generous considering the paragraph above

Haven't seen this, but the trailer looks good and I am looking forward to seeing it

Why is Diane Keaton considered to be one of the top female actresses? What would you say are her best films?

She was pretty good in Baby Boom and The First Wives Club. Haven't seen her in recent stuff to be fair. She was probably at her peak in the 80s/90s.

Haven't seen any of these films (I've seen very little of Diane Keaton in general) but here's what she was nominated for an Oscar for:
