Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Friends of Eddie Coyle - Thought this was very good, hard-boiled 70's America grittiness, with Robert Mitchum's weary face and screen presence.

I love some of the dialogues in this film. Meechum nails it with his performance. I think George V Higgins had a huge influence on the crime genre and his books are so underrated. No wonder QT loves this film so much. One of the characters in this film is called Jackie Brown

Sausage Party (2016)

Seen this at Odeon Cinema today. Finished my meeting early which just happened to be next to the Odeon so having my Limitless card in hand, thought I'd give this a whirl. What an absolute crock! Definitely an adult animation but one that tried too hard. It just felt like just because this was intended to be an adult animated movie, they could put whatever they liked in there just for the shock value. It didn't work. I think if this was given the South Park treatment, it would have been a lot funnier and more clever, witty with the gags. There were some clever moments like the homage to Saving Private Ryan and the play on food puns. The ending was a bit OTT but even so, I don't think I laughed once and barely managed to raise a smile a couple of times during the movie. It might appeal to some but seriously dudes, this is absolute rubbish.

I'm giving this a 4/10.

I can only gather you aren't its intended audience. It was exactly what anyone would expect given it was a Seth Rogan movie. Personally i thought that humour was much wittier than the South Park movie. As a movie im not 100% sure it worked but as a series of animations i loved it.

Looked over at IMDB to check who the actors were and noticed reviews are either 8/9 or 1 depending on whether one can handle/appreciate vulgar humour or not.

It wasn't really about the vulgarity per se. Did you seriously actually find it funny though? The jokes were witty but I just did not find myself laughing or chuckling apart from the odd occasions when the odd food item would pop up thinking they were being spoken to and subsequently getting told to sod off.

I don't think Seth Rogen is that funny, but he has starred in good, funny films like Knocked Up, Paul (which is pretty good) and the Kung Fu Panda series. I also enjoyed Monsters vs Aliens. I haven't seen Pineapple Express or Superbad

Bad Neighbours was quite good. This is the End was ok too.

Hangman
A family's home is broken into and once they report it and try to go back to normal, things take a turn for the worst as the intruder is living in their attic and watching their every move. Told through 'surveillance' style found footage, the film was stupid and boring. The intruder takes so many risks, e.g. standing in front of their bed watching them sleep and keeps getting away without being caught... there were one or two decent creepy scenes and the idea is quite good as it could easily happen in real life but the film is just too boring. Wasted potential 4/10
Is this a new film? I saw something similar a while back, but the creep was the bitter previous homeowner who the bank foreclosed on. Was dull.

Firstly, no it's not that film. Secondly, that freaks me out as I just bought a house from someone because it was repossessed!

:lol:There may be a C list actor lurking in your loft!

Has anyone seen the Carpenter classic "In the Mouth of Madness"? I saw it as a child but can't recall anything about it other than being scared shitless. Wondering about giving it a go tonight.

@Dirty Schwein , @pauldyson1uk ?

I read a synopsis and remember parts of it now. Will give Escape from New York and his original Halloween a go instead. Prince of Darkness also a must.

Rewatched Big Trouble In Little China the other day and when you've been reminded of Carpenters style and quality like that you are just craving more.

Have to be honest, never heard of it, it is on my HDD now, will be watching it on nights next wee, has Sam Neil in, I think he is very good.

Big Trouble in Little China | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090728/?ref_=nv_sr_1

What an absolute legend of a movie. Some of Carpenters finest work along with the all time classic "They Live!" and "The Thing". This is a movie I can rewatch and rewatch time and time again, so much better than "Escape from New York" which I never fancied all that much. EFNY is enough to rewatch once every 10th year, BTILC is a once each year happening for me. Carpenter basically made Kurt Russel. And the soundtrack is just

Carpenter sure was the king of the 80's \ 90's for me. Vampires was his last half decent work though.

9/10

Yeah I wish he'd not turned to shite after that vampires movie. Ghosts of Mars was fecking awful. He should stop doing "John Carpenter's..." in his movie titles.

Prince of Darkness is also one of his best. Should watch it if you haven't. It is about an alien satan, so it is bound to be quality.

He didn't really survive the end of the 80's, his finest era. Escape from L.A is shite as well.

Riverworld
Starts interestingly enough, with 50-odd people who'd all died on Earth at various times all wake up in this river on a strange world.
Deteriorates rapidly into tribal warfare, a coup by, er, Nero, and a big escape.
Apparently, its based on a series of books. The ending suggested that, but can't see much appetite for a sequel, based on this.
3.5/10

Yeah, Philip Jose Farmer is the author of the book series. I believe *everyone* who ever lived and died on Earth is there. Heard that both adaptations are utter garbage, so never bothered with them...

Those were the only bits I liked as well, and that's just because I love puns. It just felt too silly for me, and I'm somebody that watches Seth McFarlene shows and loved Kingsman.

However, for good recent animated films, Kubo and the Two Strings is wonderful.

The one with Sam Neil? Seen it many moons ago and remember liking it quite a bit... might have to watch it again

This is just about to start on the Horror Channel, will give it a watch.

Train to Busan 8/10

Very solid zombie movie and one of the best movies I've seen this year. The zombies are strong, fast and brutal in the 28 Days mould. They added in some social commentary aided by really punchable and truly despicable people which reminded me of The Mist.

Overall an excellent film, I'd strongly recommend anyone to watch this.

This can now be acquired. Anyone that needs a link give me a PM.

Edit: Sorry, doesn't seem to be any subtitles available yet. They are due to be out tonight.

Pretty fair review of the film, Nero was a strange one to put in there.
I doubt I will watch any sequel.

Yep, agreed. Did you notice they kind of pixellated out the rude bits when they were all nude on the beach at the beginning?

Men and Chicken - Anders Jensen (2015)

Danish film with this Scandanavian acteur de jour Mads Mikkelson geezer of brothers coming together under bizarre conditions in a fascinating rural country home to discover each other and their secret history. It´s a sort of grotesque dark comedy that predictably turns into far fetched gobbledygook with overacting galore and self parody. Looked promising at the beginning, but nah.

5 cocks up

102 Minutes That Changed America

First time I have wanted to watch this, not an easy watch I have to admit, normally watching a film there will be some conversation, but this was just 2 hours sat in silence.
Entirely made up using film shot from phones and film crew camera's , no commentary , none is needed.
For me the most harrowing bits are as the towers fell and after, it was horrific.
Seeing how New Yorkers handled that day was compelling watching and the music they used added to the atmosphere.
Watching the events of that day are still truly horrifying.

10/10

Second night I'm trying to watch X-Men Apocalypse. What a horrible film! they're figthing outside the pyramid now. Whole thing feels like a Super Bowl commercial.

edit: it's literally one of my biggest disappointments in a film! And that's even a superhero-movie

It was on Channel 4 yonks ago and I kept it on my Sky box. The definitive documentary on it for me. Excellently cut, but harrowing.
Ditto 10/10. Supreme film-making.

Fire down below
Delicately handled eco-drama, ahead of its time, where Steven Seagal single-handedly fights giant coal-burning corporate psychos and small town prejudice in the hunt for penetrative sex and enviromental harmony.
Thrills, spills and slo-mo fight stills as 'Mr Taggart' fixes the girl's porch and solves global warming.
