Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Captain America: Civil War | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3498820/?ref_=nv_sr_1

So, normally I absolutely hate superhero movies and everything they represent, but this one was actually quite good. The action scenes were done superbly, the story was quite good and I also enjoyed some of the banter between the heroes, something that usually makes me cringe. I especially liked the cameo from young spiderman. Will still only give it a 8/10 since I hate superheroes and hope they all die violently.

8/10

Cast Away
This is one that slipped the net for me but finally watched it. Really enjoyable but not the masterpiece some people make it sound like... I thought Captain Philips was a better movie, mainly because I liked the resolution in that film way more than this one... was more impactful. But Zemmeckis is a great director and Tom Hanks knocks it out of the park as usual. Holly Hunter looks scarily like Leelee Sobieski in this though... 7.5/10

Into The Forest

Two sisters must take care of each other in a world where all electricity is quickly diminishing. Wow. Awful film. Boring, slow, felt like it was 3 hours when in actual fact it was only 1 hour 90 minutes. You do get to see Evan Rachel Wood's tits which is nice but you also get to see Ellen Page's tits which was weird considering she looks like a 13 year old boy. Avoid 3/10

But the important question - did you cry during that scene with Wilson ?

It was an amazing piece of method acting. She really looked like a volleyball.

Rewatched Hard Boiled last night, it's completely ridiculous but every cliché, shootout and other type of scene is staged so stylishly and done with so much care that I couldn't help but smile inwardly throughout.

Agree with you, although, if you watch the trailer, it basically ruins the film

I hated Forrest Gump but the other Zemmeckis films I've seen (Back to the future trilogy) were good and Who framed Roger Rabbit was pretty good too.

Can't remember but I probably did

The man from Earth | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Quality flick about a 14 000 year old man who hasn't aged a bit beyond 35 years. He moves on every 10th year so his surroundings won't notice, and he has never told anyone his story. This movie centers around his last night with his new set of friends, the first ones he decides to tell the story. Very well acted and I love the story, it is a very slow burner but keeps you engaged until the very end.

8,5/10

Where can I get films like this other than buying a dvd?

The Walk and Flight are both good too. Was glad when he stopped doing those animated films.

Captain America Civil War

How do they cram as many pointless superheroes into one monstrosity? Watch and find out. 2/10

Saw War Dogs last night. Decent film about an incredible story. Funny at times. Both Teller and Hill were very good. A solid 7/10.

Actually, I fell in love with Ana de Armas who plays Teller's girlfriend in it and she's worth half a point, so 7.5/10.

Check out Knock Knock - full frontal.

One of the best action flicks I have ever watched.

Saw Don't Breathe the other day - about a group of friends planning to rob an old man. It seemed like they kind of overdid the number of "tables have turned" moments between the main characters but overall I enjoyed the film. It was fairly short at 1h 30min so it didn't drag. 7/10

Jason Bourne 2016 | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4196776/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Mediocrity is the word best used to describe this movie. Lacks the frantic action sequences and pacing that made the first three ones so good. A good example is the final "fight" between Bourne and Vincent Cassel, totally underwhelming both when it comes to pace, camerawork, fighting and excitement. Not a patch on the first three movies, still okay as a mindless action flick goes. Didn't care much for the story either, no reveals or anything like the first three movies where you actually were curious about Jason's story. Meh.

6/10

Had a late night/early morning viewing of 10 Cloverfield Lane and holy shit, that was intense. Didn't much care about the the aliens but the storyline in the bunker was fantastic. John Goodman was aces.

That shit deserves a solid 8/10

The Witch

Great little horror film. I liked how original it felt, dunno why it somehow reminded me of The Village. Great performance by those kids, not so much from Wenger playing the whiny mother. Horror how it should be.

7/10

Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales) - Damián Szifron (2014)

Argentine black comedy that divided into 6 different segments. Thought in general this was very good but had it´s very uneven moments. Some brilliant, biting Argentine satire mixed with moments that just weren´t very well done, nor very well written. The direction by Szifron was great, which definitely makes it worthwhile.

8 cocks up

So it felt original but reminded you of a different movie? :P

I watched this recently, expecting a conventional sci fi movie with all the trimmings. It turned out to be a single location talkfest with almost no action. All the better for it.

Intelligent, and full of ideas about the big questions of existence, particularly of religion and its origins, it held my interest to the end.

I had a couple of pedantic quibbles though. The central character, a 14,000 year old survivor from the upper paleolithic, doesn't claim invulnerability, merely longevity. He's managed to survive brushes with several deadly diseases, including plague, in the past. But there's no way a man could live through hundreds of lifetimes in human prehistory without dying of unnatural causes. Bones unearthed from that period often show signs of violence. For a paleolithic man the chance of dying at the hands of another human being was significant. Over two hundred lifetimes..

It is a quality flick. I especially liked the guy who played Candyman in the Candyman movies, couldn't stop listening when he was speaking (old professor guy in denimjacket and cap.)

Yes, I thought about that upon rewatching it as well. But it is stated in the movie that he had some sort of genetical mutation, giving him extraordinary cellular regeneration capabillites. That could explain him surviving disease and the likes, but not violence. Some of it may be explained by him being a loner of sorts, constantly needing to move on since his surroundings would start asking questions about him not ageing or scarring. Also the fact that he didn't scar probably hints at him being better to heal from injuries, but since injuries at that time mostly involved a club in the head until your skull cracked then yes, I guess it is a flaw.

The premise of the movie though is asking us to believe that a guy survived for 14 000 years, so I guess they can claim some artistic freedom.

Still a quality flick, and probably the best 'talkfest' movie I've ever seen. Quality acting by everyone involved, it really does seem like a real discussion and scenario taking place.

Suicide Squad (2016)

Seen at Odeon Cinema in 2D. So I finally got round to watching this yesterday. I must say it was very disappointing. Don't know how some of these 'super-heroes' can be classed as such. You could easily have labelled this Kick-Ass 3 to be honest. Apart from posturing with that sexy ass, and a few one-liners, Harley Quinn didn't really bring much to the table. And I'm sorry but Batman will never be a super-hero for me. My main gripe about super-hero movies is that the super-villains always seem to be invincible and all powerful until we reach the final climactic showdown. How Enchantress was not even able to so much as cause a scratch on the Suicide Squad despite her power was a bit ridiculous. Who was the main villain, the Enchantress or the Joker? I was confused. Anyway, they seriously need to raise their game if there is going to be a sequel. Very disappointing.

I'm giving this a 5/10.

Jason Bourne (2016)

Seen at Odeon Cinema in 2D. Again, finally got round to watching this too. Slightly more enjoyable than Suicide Squad and the least memorable of the Bourne series. Damon just seemed to be doing a lot of walking around various locations in Europe evading the authorities and that's about it really. Fairly formulaic action thriller with the usual predictable outcomes for the Jones and Vikander characters but some nice set pieces thrown in for good measure. Surely they can't squeeze another film out of this. Doesn't have the legs like the Fast series. Still fairly enjoyable.

I'm giving this a 6/10.

The BFG (2016)

Seen at Odeon Cinema in 2D. Great film from Spielberg with top notch animation. Seen the cartoon probably once many years ago though I know it's usually shown over the xmas period. Was fizzing along nicely until the section with the Queen which was a bit hammy but apart from that, quite enjoyable. The adults in the cinema were laughing more than the kids so that tells you something about the appeal this movie has. It's amazing what they can do these days with CGI rendering. This was even better than Warcraft. On a side note, I really love the Superhumans trailer they show before each movie. It's one of the most perfectly put together promos I have seen in a long time. The song is perfect and the visuals complement it brilliantly. Just love it.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Blood Father | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3647498/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Okayish run of the mill action movie with Mel Gibson who has to rescue his daughter from a fecked up situation with some gang members and drug dealers. Some funny dialogue and okay characters, but all in all nothing special. Still managed to entertain me way more than the new Bourne movie which I saw the same day though.

6,5/10

Is it like his movie Ransom which was pretty badass?

Independence Day: Turdgence

Pile of shite. Doesn't deserve a rating. Should have looked in the thread that was on here and saw what was written but I refused.

First new films of the year I've seen and they were both pretty top drawer. Promising...

A Bigger Splash
- Brilliant. I thought Guadagnino's earlier movie with Tilda Swinton 'I Am Love' had flashes of brilliance but fell a bit flat, this one though was the real deal. Popol Vuh's Aguirre score popping up at times was the icing on the cake.

Julieta
- A new dose of Almodovar melodrama is always nice, it's been a while. It's not among his best works but it was still a rich and engaging one. He's such a master at what he does, he could probably take any old story and make it sumptuous and interesting.

Oh I wanted to see this one when it came out, looked good, glad to read you enjoyed it. It's the one with Ralph Fiennes right?

Sicario is one of the best films I've seen in a long time. The tension in the highway and tunnel scenes was insane. Del Toro absolutely smashed it. Beautifully shot and a fantastic score.

Between this and Narcos, drug legalisation is looking like a pretty good idea right about now?

I've had this on my Netflix watchlist for a while now. Think I need to watch it soon.

I had it on my watchlist for months, but only remembered it again when I saw it on Netflix. Definitely worth watching! Let me know your thoughts.
