Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Gone Girl was dull as feck. Started out interestingly but when the 'twist' happened the movie lost every suspense it had, and those voice-overs were annoying.

Sunshine
Children of men
Minority Report
Edge of Tomorrow was ok
Donnie Darko
Interstellar
Gravity?
I like Snowpiercer
Inception
District 9, up until the final third
Moon

Would you call Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind a sci-fi? Love that film.

Still haven't seen Ex Machina which is meant to be great.

I'll even throw in AI as I know you like it. Cos you're in love with Jude Law. Maybe.
Children of Men, Minority Report, Edge of Tomorrow and Interstellar are decent.

Moon's pretty overrated. The Aldi version of Solaris.

Yeah, go see Ex Machina, now.

@Rooney in Paris no love for Event Horizon?
Oh I love Event Horizon, but it's 1997 so wasn't in the timeframe Nilssy set out. I'm actually currently in the process of moving out, and while going through my DVDs yesterday, I stumbled across Even Horizon and put it aside to watch it again. Great mix of horror and sci-fi, scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.
Go watch it, you philistine. Report back here later.
Ffs Vato I just said I'm moving out can a guy not get a break?!
Would "The man from earth" be considered a science fiction movie? Because that one is fecking great. One of my favourite movies.

Oh yeah I think it would, and it's a very good shout, great little film.

What's so scary about Event Horizon in particular? I ask because I'm the kind of twit who calls an exorcist if a daddy long legs is in the room, so I'm not brave at all...but Event Horizon didn't scare me much (though it's a good film, I reckon).

In The Mood For Love

Was a bit disappointed by this. Objectively it's an excellent movie; the characters, themes, filming etc are all strong, but it just somehow felt a bit...dull? I dunno, I tend to enjoy a good bit of comedy and light-heartedness in any romance movies, and that was somehow lacking here. I preferred Chungking Express.

Nightcrawler

Really good film. Been meaning to watch it for a while, and the hype surrounding Gyllenhaal's performance is largely justified - he plays a cold, manipulative, awkward sociopath down to a tee. It's far from subtle, although there's some interesting comments in there as to the nature of sensationalist media, and the lengths Americans will go do and the things they'll do to achieve success. Things arguably line up a bit too well at times for the protagonist, though. Also props to Riz Ahmed from Four Lions who gives a good performance.

Talk about understatement, it was fecking depressing
But still awesome IMO

Very much so. I dunno...it just didn't click for me. I'll probably rewatch it in a different mood at some point and enjoy it a lot more.

You just weren't in the mood for in the mood for love, love.

Conjuring 2

Quality flick, James Wan really has this genre locked down. Just as good as the first and with some genuinely scary moments, also a nice little twist regarding the demon \ spirit. As a matter of fact I think I liked this even more than the first one. Together with the Insidious series a notch above most modern horror. Patrick Wilson doing really well in both series.

8/10

Predator 2

Think I've might have had a bit of a romantic memory of this film from back in the day, since I didn't really enjoy it this time around. I had forgotten just how bad the acting is, Danny Glover the only one that comes out of it somewhat unscathered. Fails to recreate the vibe from the first one. Cool that we get to see some more of the Predators weapons, but not in any way or matter a classic action movie like the original

6/10

An arty cinema theater near where I live is doing a Terrence Malick cycle, and I went to see The Thin Red Line this morning. It's one of my all time favourite films and it's the first time I got to see it on a big screen, which was a brilliant experience. Still as beautiful as ever, really good war film which manages to convey the pointlessness of war as well as the fear the soldiers experimented in a very subtle manner, with Malick's sense of aesthetics and poetry which work very well.

Triple 9

I'm glad I read so many bad reviews from you spoilt brats as it lowered my expectations for this. Great film that gets a bonus point for being the first one I don't hate Casey Affleck in. 7/10

Everest - not that bad really. I found it kind of affecting. Difficult story to tell admittedly but they did a serviceable job.
Watched this while stuck in hospital over the weekend.
I thought it was one of the better films I had seen this year and was genuinely moved at the end.
The cast did an excellent job,the filming was brilliant.
yes a difficult story to tell, the way they did it you really felt for the people up there and wanted them to get off.
Josh Brolin has the cocky Texan was stand out for me.

9/10

Saw War Dogs last night. Decent film about an incredible story. Funny at times. Both Teller and Hill were very good. A solid 7/10.

Actually, I fell in love with Ana de Armas who plays Teller's girlfriend in it and she's worth half a point, so 7.5/10.

Go see Days of Heaven
Yeah I probably will, it's actually the only Malick film I haven't seen yet, so seeing it on the big screen would be cool. This theatre is really great, you'd love it, they have cycles like this all the time with multiple screenings a day. They're doing a Verhoeven cycle next I think.

I remember having the same kinds of feelings first time I saw it, fresh out of being enchanted by the quirkiness of Chungking Express/Fallen Angels, but I watched it again a few years later after having watched a few more of WKW's more moodier films, and it just clicked for real that time.

It sounds so much classier if it's a 'cycle'.

Shame - Good film, Fassbender absolutely owned the screen. 7.5/10

An Education - Charming film, Carey Mulligan is lovely. 7.5/10

Fish Tank - Ehh, was OK, expected better. Dance scenes were pretty hard to watch. 5.5/10.

Is that the Cinemateque at Bercy, @Rooney in Paris ?
Wow posh you, you know the Cinematheque! It's not that one, though I went to see Stalker a few months ago at the Cinematheque, it's very good. This is a cinema called Les Fauvettes on avenue des Gobelins (I live at Place d'Italie, well for a few more days), it was opened recently (last year I think) by Gaumont-Pathé and its very modern and nice.

How do you know la Cinematheque?

I am not a serial killer | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4303340/

Indie flick based on a popular book. It is about a boy growing up in a funeral home who is diagnosed as a sociopath, who starts to question himself and his sanity when a serial killer strikes in the sleepy Minnesota town he resides in. The film was okay, don't want to spoil anything but it turns a bit supernatural after a while, the movie changes pace about midway when it becomes more of a supernatural horror type of movie. Pretty good movie but nothing too special.

6/10

The man from Earth | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Quality flick about a 14 000 year old man who hasn't aged a bit beyond 35 years. He moves on every 10th year so his surroundings won't notice, and he has never told anyone his story. This movie centers around his last night with his new set of friends, the first ones he decides to tell the story. Very well acted and I love the story, it is a very slow burner but keeps you engaged until the very end.

8,5/10

Fresh (1994)
http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/

Probably loads of you have seen this, but for anyone who hasn't it's a little gem of a 'hood movie that kind of slipped under the radar. Personally I find it more engaging than the likes of Menace 2 Society, as there's a genuine plot beyond "life is so tough here" and it's not burdened with a Hip-Hop soundtrack (or actor) for the sake of it, going for a kind of Wild West theme instead.

The plot centers around 12 year-old (?) Sean Nelson's playing of two drug-dealing gangs off against each other as he maneuvers himself out of the neighborhood (the Bushwick section of Brooklyn) and the sacrifices he makes along the way - all inspired by his chess-genius father Samuel L. Jackson.

Some classic lines and scenes, and standout performances by Nelson and by Giancarlo Esposito as the leader of the Puerto Rican gang. Solid movie overall.

7.5/10

When I was in Paris a couple of years ago I tried to go but it closes in August. They had Cocteau exhibition on. On the flip side I discovered the national archives across the bridge was freaking cool.

I learned about it from a Jim Jarmusch interview. It was where he decided to become a filmmaker. Or something.

The Assassin - It's a strange one, a breezy, stunningly beautiful film, with glorious cinematography and set design, in fact the story and wuxia elements often felt pushed to the side by the beauty of the landscapes. The subtle soundtrack and sound design were also quite hypnotic. Despite all this the story left me completely bewildered and I might have to watch it again just to gather what really went on in the film.

Indignation - Phillip Roth adaptation from mogul/screenwriter James Schamus. Logan Lerman is superb and the film has excellent period detail, there's a scene midway through that's just a sixteen minute conversation and it's one of the best I've seen this year. Usual criticisms could be levelled at a Roth adaptation, namely Sarah Gadon's shiksa goddess.
