Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Star Trek Beyond: beyond awful. I wasn't really expecting much, we actually ended up seeing it a bit by mistake, and it was just stupid. It felt disjointed (in part because the characters are split up and each have their own stories for a while, in part because of poor editing) and pretty boring overall. The first attack of the Enterprise was pretty well done though. Also, it really wanted to convey the feeling of loneliness in space, and how the purpose of their mission isolated them in the unknown... but it didn't manage to do it.

Also, it was at times just plain stupid, like Kirk riding around on a stupid motorbike up until Rage against the machine being an integral part of saving mankind (I shall say no more, as I wouldn't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it, oh no).

Really poor.

Which blockbusters this year haven't been shite?

I thought Star Trek was supposed to be politics in space? Star Wars is the stupid one with the fighty fighty space explosions.

Basically Star Wars is the Trump of Sci Fi, is what I'm saying. Dumbing down everything in it's wake.

They are suffering from J.J Abrams and Damon Lindelof who have now spread themselves to different franchises.

They say it might be terminal.

R.I.P in peace science fiction.

Predator

Rewatched this classic. Still holds up and hasn't aged too badly. Full of quality one liners and cheesy action. Still one of my all time favourite action flicks. Wish they would do a bit more background on the Predator though, but stuff like that wasn't part of any action movie back then. Arnie beating a top conditioned technological superior killing machine from outer space with the help of a bow, some mud and a big lug is still as enjoyable as ever.

8/10

Is Lindelof still doing Prometheus/Alien? Christ...

That one about the whales was a bit much though.

Well, in fairness, whilst I take your general point, most Star Trek films were bloody terrible long before JJ arrived and the Star Wars prequels were hardly smashing were they?

Gone Girl (2014) - Interesting film, good concept. Gets annoying towards the end though. 6/10

Far to harsh on this. I thought it was brilliant, and I wasn't even technically allowed into the cinema when I watched it

Warcraft - Travis Fimmel is more Charlie Hunnam than Charlie Hunnam. The orcs looked quite good. Making them lame Toby Kebbels was a mistake. Why was everyone so young in this. Lothar was old as feck in the original mythology. Duncan Jones has cooked it.
Warcraft - why is everyone in this film so young? And why are the Orcs such wimps? Travis Fimmel is more Charlie Hunnam than the actual Charlie Hunnam.

Thank God for China, ey Duncan.
You really want your Warcraft review read, don't you?

Star Trek Beyond... 'cos it was at least entertaining, didn't take itself too seriously, and was a nice, inoffensive fun time at the cinema. Also, the two big set-pieces that were set in space were very well done.

Also, you should really be able to tell the difference between Rage Against the Machine and the Beastie Boys.

I loved that scene, looked great on the big screen.

It was fecking stupid.

Sorry about the mistake, don't really know either band that well, and I thought it reminded me of a Rage against the machine song. I actually had a doubt about it when writing my post but I couldn't be bothered checking it, that's how much I cared about the film.

Brothers Grimsby
Wasnt too excited by the trailer and to be honest, pretty forgettable films. A few laughs here and there but on the whole, quite a flat film. I do like Mark Strong, and he was good in it but too much vulgar comedy, which I don't really find funny 4.5/10

Daddy's Home

I hated this trailer but to my surprise I really liked the film. It made me laugh quite a few times and the story was enjoyable. Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell have great chemistry and I found myself smiling through the film as the momentum shifts between these competing fathers... took me by surprise 7/10

Amen!

I hadn´t seen any Star Wars since the first one when it came out and hated it as a kid, but by circumstance I sort of had to watch the last one, The Force Awakens. Not even a cynical cnut like myself was prepared for how absolute shite it was. Cliche ridden, horrible acting, horrible writing, horrible directing. I can´t get my head around how discerning people consume that crap. I can´t even imagine a kid buying into that. Harrison Ford and Adam Driver should not get a role ever again after that performance. I get this feeling like some kind of wool is being pulled over the eyes of collective culture with this farce of a movie.

Jesus, calm down.

The newest one was alright...nothing incredible or brilliant as such, but an enjoyable enough action film and nostalgia ride for a lot of people. People went for a fun film and got one.

Not necessarily. Ridley Scott still keeps doing his own thing. With the aliens, blade runner and prometheus sequels coming up I think we will see some great sci fi films. I wish someone adapts Arthur Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama.

Bit harsh on Harrison Ford, he wasn't even subtle about the fact he didn't want to be there and yet he was still comfortably the best thing in it.

The last 15 years has been pretty dismal when it comes to science fiction hasn't it?
Sunshine
Children of men
Minority Report
Edge of Tomorrow was ok
Donnie Darko
Interstellar
Gravity?
I like Snowpiercer
Inception
District 9, up until the final third
Moon

Would you call Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind a sci-fi? Love that film.

Still haven't seen Ex Machina which is meant to be great.

I'll even throw in AI as I know you like it. Cos you're in love with Jude Law. Maybe.

I wish someone would dare to take on the task of making a "Forever war" or "old man's war" movie. Probably two of the best Scfi books ever written, and very movie friendly.

Edit: Oh, and Sunshine and Interstellar are quality newer scifi flicks.

On second thoughts, I was a bit harsh there. It was an enjoyable film, it just irritated me how

that b*tch got away with it in the end

Guess I'm a fan of happy endings. :D

I liked that though. It was different. There are films in which I like a lot (some David Fincher films) where the bad guy wins such as
Gone Girl and also Seven.
