Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Just watched 'Rise of the Foot soldier'

seen it yet spoony? based on the story of the 3 guys that were found shot to bits in a landrover down a country lane in esssex back in the mid nineties.

good script, full of tits violence, footy hooliganism and east end gangsters

8/10

btw can you lads get back to some mainstream movies as well? everyone else has left the thread now, presumably because theyre bored reading about obscure indian movies

I Saw Sunshine yesterday. The first 3/4 was very good but it lost it a bit at the end. Still worth a watch particulalry if you like Sci Fi. 7/10

TBF we don't discuss Indian movies quite enough. Spoony's obsessed with Japanese and Koerean stuff.

This place has gone a bit dead off late, hasn't it? I'm guessing Spoony realised he watched far too many movies when he was imagined the barman's words with subtitles

A movie that I saw just now:

V for Vendetta - Very good despite a fair amount of changes from the novel. Was looking towards a more dark and dainty setting but it wasn't meant to be. A few scenes (especially the conversation between V and the statue of justice) which I loved from the book being omitted gave it a slightly hollow feeling. Could've made it longer

Yeah i was looking forward to that too. Also, i was looking forward to the scene where Inspector Finch loads up on LSD to track V. I guess they just Hollywood-ised the novel to lower the ratings and make more money, which is what got Alan Moore so furious.

Anyone else anxiously waiting for 'The Watchmen' to come out next year ?

No. Sounds interesting, though.

The last third was plain silly. Hated the overuse of the camera effects and all. Very disappointed with it overall.

Just watched Pilot of Crime Story. Classic from the good times.

Ray Luca is master of evil.

I'm downloading the whole series.

Seen Memento a million times but wasn't aware that there was a book.

Wikipedia informs me that the short story "Memento Mori" was written by Chris Nolan's brother Jonathan. Hmmm ....

I was really pissed when this cnut in the bar spit into his beer and laughed.

He should be his next target after this annoying cop.

No.

Review it after you finish reading it.

Check out Following, too, Salvatore. Same director.

Sure will. I'm almost finished downloading Ran

The book will be hard to find in here but I'll search my balls either ways

Thankfully Brad Pitt didn't get the Pearce's role for this one

Actually, is there any other post-2000 movie which can be counted as a classic?

Ran's brilliant btw.

Some of the better post 2000 movies.
1. City of God.
2. The Prestige
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind.
4. Pan's Labyrinth.

Movies that I've heard are great but haven't seen yet :
Donnie Darko
Requiem for a Dream

It's shit.

Donnie Dark is brilliant, though.

Requeim is great, Eternal Sunshine is one of my fav movies as well.

Watched Science of Sleep again, loved it even more the second time.

Across 110th Street. Fantastic blaxploitation film. Highly recommend it if you love the drama. Anthony Quinn produced it, so I'm sure that was a huge part in taking out much of the over the top stuff that had crept into blaxploitation films.

Went out and bought the following DVD's yesterday. Can't wait to get started.

1. Chinatown.
2. Cool hand Luke
3. Once upon a time in the west.
4. The Magnificent Seven ride.
5. Casino.
6. Ran
7. Pan's Labyrinth
8. To kill a mockingbird.
9. City of God

DVDs I've watched recently:
Fargo - **** - Excellent and witty neo-film noir
Army of Shadows - **** - Great French film about the German occupation. A little slow moving, but it is well shot and the characters are well developed.
Infernal Affairs - **** - Saw the Departed first, and have to say that this was just as good, if not better than the Hollywood remake.

Downloads:
Knocked up - *** - pretty funny
Live Free or Die Hard - **** - Entertaining; full of explosions and improbable scenarios like action films from the 80s and 90s.

DOA: Dead or Alive. My roommate had this from Netflix, I was slightly drunk, we figured we'd watch it. This is by far the worst movie I have ever seen. I mean it is fecking awful. Never see it.

I had to watch it at the pictures.

I wasn't best pleased, put it that way.

i thought the last king of scotland was great

Forrest Whittaker's performance was immense as was James McAvoy's

great show, watch it

This Is Enland

This film's a perfect example of why VanNistelrator was wrong in that thread about film buffs

It's a film with real heart and soul, some cracking acting and generally good (mostly improvised I think) dialogue. The story's nearly there, if a bit lumpy, and let down by stopping at the most dramatic point and cutting to stock images of the Falklands war, which is meant to make a powerful point but just wrecks the impact of the film.

But what really turns it from a potentially excellent film to a pretty average one is the crap filmmaking. It feels like the work of a bloke who's got talent but has never seen a film before. You can possibly get away with that if you've got unbelievable talent, but he hasn't. So many of the choices of where to put the camera were wrong, and the editing was shocking, with several scenes playing out way too long, and schmaltzy music brought in so jarringly over emotional bits that it wasn't even manipulative, it was just embarrassing.

I like the way it touched on the history of the skinhead movement. Sure, it wasn't deep, but people who think skinhead culture was just a racist movement, will get a much better idea of the whole picture.
