Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Nice guys

Downloaded this movie and it was possibly the worst comedy I've seen all year.
Shit plot and very unfunny.

The weird thing is how highly it was rated by rotten tomatoes.
I found ghostbusters way funnier.
You're crazy, Nice Guys was excellent, one of the best films of the year so far.

Agreed. How he can even compare it to the absolute tripe that Ghostbusters is baffles me.

Train to Busan 8/10

Very solid zombie movie and one of the best movies I've seen this year. The zombies are strong, fast and brutal in the 28 Days mould. They added in some social commentary aided by really punchable and truly despicable people which reminded me of The Mist.

Overall an excellent film, I'd strongly recommend anyone to watch this.

Oh, a zombie movie

Can't find it online though. I see it is very fresh so it might get there eventually.

Sounds good.

I've been looking for this since I heard about it on a podcast. Can't find it anywhere

The Lobster-A really interesting dystopian sort of film in which newly single people have 45 days to find love again, or they'll be turned into an animal of their choice. It's a film which sort of moves between dark comedy, absurd drama, with little hints of horror thrown in there due to the sort of deadpan, creepy way everyone talks and interacts with each other.

I've seen a lot online after watching it regarding people who thought the second half was much weaker, but I think I kind of enjoyed it equally despite it being very different in certain respects. It's got a very good cast though, lots of recognisable names in roles which vary from central to minor...always fun recognising actors in brief roles.

It's difficult to kind of gauge overall what the message was supposed to be (since it's sort of open-ended), but I did get the impression it was sort of taking the piss out of certain relationships rituals/traditions we often seem to have, the desperation with which people often pursue relationships, but also the loneliness that can often come with a sense of inevitable single life for many people too. Sort of a marmite film that's quite unique but I really liked it.

Money Monster Well acted with a good cast but in the end the plot just isn't believable so fails. 6/10

Sing Street If you liked The Commitments you will enjoy this. Not the same animal but related. Funny, charming and packed with nostalgia for anyone who remembers the 80's. They didn't quite nail the ending but well worth a watch. 8/10

I absolutely hated it, the style/ dialogue were exhausting. Fell asleep somewhere in the woods as well.

Yeah, as I said a divisive one.

It's definitely got a very monotone style to the dialogue, which sort of comes across as almost being deliberately creepy.

Jack Reacher

Rubbish. Ruins the book and the character totally.

Movie just meanders through lacks pace or direction of any kind. Tom Cruise doesn't look like a ex-army hobo part and still has his stupid expression from MI movies totally not matching what the movie needs. Abysmal action sequences.

3/10

I just saw a trailer for a film where a bloke gets turned into a walrus. I can't remember the name of it but has anybody seen it and is it any good?

Funny thing is that Jack Reacher is described as something of a man mountain in the books, about 2 metres tall and wide as a barn.

It is safe to say that Tom Cruise is nothing of the sort.

Is the character Jack Reacher meant to be really cheesy? like in the book? or is that just Tom Cruise's natural cheese shining through in the film?

Nah. As I said not. It's like they ignored the book totally.

He's physically big, tall and very strong. Strong willed, serious and not known for sense of humour. None of the charming pretty boy action hero Cruise plays.

The Jungle Book (2016) 7/10

It's definitely worth watching and has a great cast. I liked Balu's character the best who was voiced by Bill Murray. There are lots of scenes that will make you smile and laugh, especially the honey scene. I cant really remember the original film to compare it with but its a very well done modern take on The Jungle Book story.

It's called Spike or Tusk and is bizarre as feck. There's an interesting backstory to how it got written too. Not quite interesting enough for me to remember, unfortunately.

Aaaaaaand google/wiki compensates for my damaged brain, yet again...

The idea for the film came during the recording of SModcast 259 The Walrus and The Carpenter.[8] In the episode, Smith with his longtime friend and producer Scott Mosierdiscussed an article featuring a Gumtree ad where a homeowner was offering a living situation free of charge, if the lodger agrees to dress as a walrus. The discussion went on from there, resulting in almost an hour of the episode being spent on reconstructing and telling a hypothetical story based on the ad. Smith then told his Twitter followers to tweet "#WalrusYes" if they wanted to see their hypothetical turned into a film, or "#WalrusNo" if they did not. A vast majority of Smith's following agreed that the film should be made

Although I reckon google/wiki are partly responsible for my crappy recall in the first place...

Lights Out
A family are haunted by a ghost that only appears in the dark. So I loved the short film to this but was concerned if the concept would work as a feature but it sure does. Starts clunky but the film quickly picks up for the better. The concept is used well but always feels fresh as the director constantly finds new ways to make the concept feel fresh. The acting was spot on and the mystery surrounding the supernatural is interesting enough to keep you hooked. My main concern is that there is too much exposition. There were about three different scenes where the protagonist is explaining the ghosts back story but it only needed one scene to be fair. Having said that, it's a really short film and doesn't outstay it's welcome. One of the best horror films I seen this year 8.5/10

Before I Wake

I'm a big fan of Mike Flanagan (loved both Oculus and Hush) so was eagerly awaiting this. This is a film about a couple (Thomas Jane and and Kate Bosworth) who adopt a boy (the kid from Room) and realise that his dreams manifest into reality... as well as his nightmares. I loved the concept, felt like something Stephen King would come up with. The acting was excellent and it was refreshing to see a horror film (although this could be fantasy drama) that tries something new. Only problem is that it's a very slow film with a resolution that won't please everybody. Still worth a watch though 7/10

Good to hear about Lights Out, Schwein, looking forward to it.
I think you'll enjoy it. Forgot to say earlier, another thing that bugged me was that the film broke it's own rules a couple of times... which is a pet peeve of mine! Still a good watch!

Watched Scarface (1932) last night, or well, I had it on in the background so I wasn't fully paying attention to it but the thing that striked me the most about it was that it took itself so seriously in addressing the gangster problem and criticizing the glorification of that particular lifestyle, whilst the remake on the other hand had the complete opposite effect and did nothing but glorify. Ironing and so forth.

Little Big Man - I don't think it's aged that well and really needed to have at least 30 minutes cut from it. The best thing about it is the portrayal of Native American life and the horror of the genocide. Dustin Hoffman is annoying until he matures in the last half hour.

Money Monster
Well acted and well shot. The film really builds up tension and suspense quite well but the message is too heavy handed and the plot is too farfetched. An enjoyable ride while it lasts but don't expect to remember it a week later 6.5/10

Fort Apache - The Bronx - I can't remember why I ordered this from Netflix but I slogged through it. It's a mostly cack story about policing in a tough NY precinct. It's acted well enough but the story is rubbish and the really bad soundtrack that accompanies the action scenes is comical. Paul Newman is looking pretty old at this point.

Warcraft - Travis Fimmel is more Charlie Hunnam than Charlie Hunnam. The orcs looked quite good. Making them lame Toby Kebbels was a mistake. Why was everyone so young in this. Lothar was old as feck in the original mythology. Duncan Jones has cooked it.
