Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Paterson - Jim Jarmusch and Adam Driver are a great pairing and this is a small, sweet drama about a bus driver/poet in New Jersey. Jarmush tends to see the good in people. It had a couple of stylistic/editing choices that I found a bit grating but otherwise, highly recommended.

Neon Demon -
another DOA turd from Winding Refn. Avoid, unless you're into the visuals, which are impressive in a pop video sort of way.

Certain Women -
I didn't like Kelly Reichardt's last film, Night Moves. This is similar in tone but a lot better. Three women's stories in rural Montana, each one made up of small but insightful moments. Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Kristin Stewart.

My Scientology Movie -
undoubtedly amusing but pretty lightweight take on a low hanging fruit. Louis Theroux nicks Joshua Oppenheimer's Act of Killing schtick by having actors recreate David Miscavige's alleged abuse.

Gran Torino

I don't think I've actually ever seen a Clint Eastwood film, but I've seen bits and pieces. Really good film, I liked it a lot. Its actually funnier than most comedies and Clint Eastwood is freaking immense.

Problem I had with it was the acting of the other main actors. They were on the whole very poor and brought this brilliant film down a peg or two.

7/10
It's OK I guess, but I was a bit surprised so many people raved so much about it. The message is as subtle as a sledgehammer.

That's my issue with Eastwood's films, the guy is as subtle as a Hummer at a convention about the environment. I found Gran Torino quite dull.

The Purge: Election Year
So didn't like the first Purge film that much, felt that with this idea, I wanted to see the chaos out in the streets, and felt cheated with a home invasion thriller. The Purge Anarchy fixed this and we saw all the mayhem on a large scale. This felt like a weaker version of the second film. It has this election theme but I think that hindered the film as it feels rushed to coincide with the U.S. elections this year. It was just one scene of people chasing the senator to another for quite a while, before they changed things up. The random acts of crazyness in the streets felt too forced, as if to create powerful visual imagery, but it was too heavy handed. The acting (especially the 'candy girls') was atrocious. They should have spent more time building on the election elements rather than go straight into the purge night within 10 minutes of the film starting. Made it very repetitive, like one of those bad PS1 action games. Frank Grillo killed it though, he is really good and there were some cool moments, which I won't mention as it might spoil it for those who want to watch the film. The already pretty thin premise has been stretched and I hope they leave it at that 5/10

The Secret In Their Eyes
A team of investigators are torn apart when one of their daughters is raped and killed. Stars Chewitel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman (still looking smoking hot), Julia Roberts (Looking older than a Ferguson television), Joe Cole, Hank from Breaking Bad and Kevin Spacey's right hand from House Of Cards. Big cast but a boring film. Julia Roberts gives the film some gravitas with her performance but you can't help but feel that this is a straight to dvd film. It's boring and paced accordingly. I had to watch it in three sittings. The original is much better 3.5/10

I'd bin the film and possibly burn my house down if it looked like it was going to take 3 sitting to finish so fair play.

I'm watching The Day After Tomorrow for some reason, it's even shitter than I remember and where the hell do those Wolves come from?
Some zoo in New York city. There was a scene where the zookeepers were asking why the animals were going a bit nuts, before the big storm hit. That said, it doesn't matter really. Hollywood has to have a danger/fight scene before the ultimate and inevitable victory.

The 33
The story of the Chilean miners trapped in a mine back in 2010.
Good acting with some humour thrown in, especially the guy with the mistress and wife living next door to each other.

Inside Men (Korean)
Typical Korean gangster/political drama, the ending is a bit mission impossible esque but all and all enjoyable although it drags on a bit.

Star Trek (Beyond)
Not bad, but a bit tiring and boring, same shit on a different sequel. The only thing that amazes me is Georgetown, and that's about it. The characters are all cutboard cliche from the Star trek of the past, there's no chemistry between anyone at all, not even Kirk + Spock. The humor are crude and no cohesion at all, it seems that everyone is having their own line of jokes and their counterpart isn't even laughing. Simon pegg tries, but imho he's the only one trying with everyone else seems to be there just for the sake of contractual.

Eye in the sky
Brilliant movie, but the main issue I have with that is that I don't really think that any of them care for the bread seller girl. Seriously this is the kind of guys that has no issue sending troops to foreign country, bombing the hell out of a nation, and it does sounds hypocritical. They have no problem sending in troops/agents that has a high percentage of being killed/captured/tortured by the dozens just to protect one girl. It sounds very hypocritical that the girls life is more valuable because she's just a girl and the rest are adults.

Knock-Knock
Keanu Reeves invites 2 hot chicks during a rainy storm, the 2 chicks seduces him (this is my main attraction, and that's all), 2 chicks turns out to be a raping psycho (oh yeah), and... it all goes downhill from there. Worth watching only if you imagine how it's like to have 2 hot attractive girls trying to seduce you in a vulgar way (the blonde chick is ok, but the other one isn't even that attractive)

Rhinestone
Sylvester Stallone is fresh off of Rocky 2 and First Blood when he takes on this comedic role as a cab driver who's groomed to become a country singer in order for Dolly Parton to get out of her contract from the sleezy owner of New York's hottest country bar.

The movie is based on the song Rhinestone Cowboy (not sure how) and it's a testament of Stallone's hubris. I highly recommend it and it's available in full on Youtube.

Surprisingly Stallone is a good script writer. And people slag Rambo as a mindless american masochism movie, but they forgot that circa 90 most of the world knew what "Rambo" means.

The Iceman

True story crime about the notorious Polish mob hitman Richard Kuklinski. Some okay acting, but somehow the movie manages to be boring. I don't think they did a very good job of portraying his sociopathic nature, and his "colleague" who drive the ice-truck was actually more interesting and better portrayed. Not sure if that character is factually correct though or if that was how he got the nickname "The Iceman". Just a pretty meh movie all in all.

5/10

Wasn't First Blood adapted? I used to have the book. I think SS had full control over the others which is why they were so shite.

I need the help of fellow caftards movie lovers.

Been thinking of starting to watch a crime scene TV series. But with so many to choose for, can any of you enlighten ones enlighten me to the path of light?

On top of my head we have NCI:S miami, etc, Law and order, SVU, CSI, etc? Which would your recommendation be?

They are all shit. The only I could stomach is "Bones" which admittedly is a bit on the side from CSI and the likes. Still it is forensic detectives doing lab work in cooperation with the FBI to solve crimes. And they actually have some decent characters that it is interesting to follow, as opposed to the guys in the shows you are listing. Also more of a red thread in "Bones", as opposed to most crime scene tv series which is very episode to episode.

I don't see the point of that really.

My mate's dad went mental when we came back from the video shop with FB. He thought it was a video nasty because of the bit where he sews his arm wound up.

I agree, I happen to recall seeing the first Law and Order (the original back in the early 90s) and it's pretty good, but probably it's just a 10 years old kids stumbling into adult drama.

The one with Forest Whitaker any good? Criminal Minds?

These kinds of shows are the sort of shows I never watch except from the odd episode on the TV. I remember CSI being fun at first for being something new, but it quickly faded.

Honestly the only bingeworthy crime scene show is Bones if you haven't seen it. There are like 12 seasons available for download.

The main stars are a pretty fit bird, and that guy from Buffy and Angel.

Don't see the point of what?

The sewing up his arm bit also stuck with me. The most brutal thing I'd seen in a movie at that age. And for a few years after that.

The short chapter.

We were watching much nastier stuff at that time. Used to get Dawn of the Dead on a weekly basis and all the other slasher and zombie films. We had to walk 5 miles round trip to get a video so if it was a crap one like Zombie Lake it was a massive pisser.

Oh right. There is no point. Just useless trivia, cluttering up my brain.

I don't remember being too freaked out by the zombie movies gore. Something about the wound suturing really shook me up though. Dunno why.

Argh... 12 seasons? Nah.. I dont have time for it. Never finished the wire beyond season 4... Now that I'm married it's kinda hard to binge anything. Must share the tv...

No need to watch them all. I think I stopped after season 6 or so. Also it can be viewed on an episode-episode basis.

Give Bones a try, I think you'll like it.

Much better? The original is a fecking masterpiece.

Thanks for your reviews. Agree with both.

Without a Trace is an intelligent, somewhat old-fashioned show, if you're not put off by its serious tone. It's aimed at an adult audience, and targets the heart and brain more than the eyes.

Dope (2015)

A bit different. Enjoyable and an easy watch.

6/10

Buried (2010)

That was one of the most gut-wrenching films I've seen in a long time. The tension was brilliant and the claustrophobic feel was like nothing I've felt before in a film.

Great to see Ryan Reynolds in a serious role too, he was fantastic.

8/10

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates - Saw a preview of this tonight, pretty funny movie. I would definitely recommend this for a date night. 6.5/10

Yeah have to agree, was talking to a colleague about this the other day. Really cool movie.

Wasn't it famous for having one of the shortest chapters ever? Two words. Bonus points if you can remember what they were.

For a short chapter, how about this from Len Shackleton's autobiography?
Extracted from his bio on Wikipedia:

"Shackleton became a sports journalist after retiring as a footballer. He had been an outspoken critic of the football establishment during his playing career, particularly so of the maximum wage rule. He used his nickname, The Clown Prince of Soccer, for his 1956 autobiography. One chapter of that book was The Average Director's Knowledge of Football. It consisted of a single blank page. The book proved to be immensely popular, and ran into five editions within three months."
