Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Ip Man 3
Loved the first two Ip Man films and whilst this was still good, it was definitely a step down from the previous two. This is slightly different in tone, whereas the first two heavily feature nationalism, this is more about life. This was a nice change, especially the storyline about Ip Man and his wife who is dying of cancer. It was also cool to see the fight between Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson. Quite well choreographed. However, there were too many storylines that were not handled right and the film therefore jumped from one to the other and felt like a mess at times. Oh and some casual racism calling foreigners "foreign devils" Still the fight scenes were superb and Donnie Yen is a really likeable actor 6/10
Doesn't he die after drinking poisoned tea in the first one, or am I getting my films muddled up? The fight scenes were definitely good though.

Melbourne International Film Festival starts next weekend and it's got a great lineup. I've booked tickets for Jim Jarmusch's Paterson, Olivier Assayas' Personal Shopper, Kelly Reichardt's Certain Women, Louis Theroux' My Scientology Movie, Paul Verhoeven's Elle, Tobias Lindholm's A War and Maren Ade's Toni Erdmann.

Considering the complete lack of worthwhile releases recently it's a relief to look forward to going to the cinema.

Can't wait for Certain Women - Kelly Reichardt is my favourite director working today.

Anybody seen Mississippi Grind ?

Quite a decent gambling addiction/roadmovie with Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds. Very character-driven, easy-going but melancholic movie. Drags a little, half way through, but an overall profound and enjoyable film. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Very 70s. From the writers/directors of Half Nelson.

4/5

Listening to Heston yapping on is just as fun as sitting through three hours of church.

I like Heston. He was the perfect actor for that kind of role, although it's difficult to imagine him in a light, frivolous part. He had a kind of spiritual gravitas which was rare, except in some of the black actors. The difference being that Heston had acting chops as well as presence.

Like Wesley Snipes?

My boss saw it and thought it was shit. Got good reviews by film critics over here though.
I hope it's good. He's done some great films and not sure how many more he has in him tbh. Seems to have gotten good reviews all over, even with it's somewhat risque premise.

Outlaws and Angels

What can I say? This is beyond any Western you've ever seen. I thought I was tripping on acid at times. It's not that it's visually psychedelic or anything, it's just that the storyline goes off in directions that traditional Westerns don't.

The premise is this: bank robbers fleeing the posse come across an isolated dwelling. There's a husband, wife and two daughters living in it. The three robbers charge in, take over, eat some grub, then get chatty with their hostages. Then the veil is lifted over this seemingly innocent family. I'll put the rest in a spoiler if you don't want to know what happens next. It's crazy, though.

The father is abusive, the mother knows it, the daughters hate each other because the older one is jealous that the younger one is now sharing her father's bed, the younger one ends up falling for the gang leader and telling him what her dad did to her and her sister, the mother gets fingered by a gang member whilst lying next to her hubby while he's pretending to sleep, the younger daughter shoots the older daughter, one gang member almost rapes the dad, the younger daughter then beats the dad to death with a rifle, she joins the gang and they leave the mother some of the bank robbery money, the leader of the posse shows up later, is killed by the mother, the gang stops for a rest and the younger daughter shoots the gang leader and another gang member, she runs out of bullets and is about to be shot by the third gang member when he's shot and killed by the dying gang leader, they all die and she chops all their heads off for the bounties, she then goes back and kills her mum and takes the rest of the money. The end. Fuc. Kin. Mental.

Bloody hell, wish I read that spoiler before watching it. Had no idea what I got myself into.

Decent film though. Original, I guess?

Kairo - Didn't like it as much as the director's earlier, vastly superior effort, Cure. It basically had the same look and unnerving sound design...and also some social commentary, which I thought was a bit too heavy handed in this one. Not bad, but very much meh.

Just watching "The Treatment" , very very good, subtitled and it's about child abuse so not for everyone but as I said very good.

Saw it on a plane. Would give it a 6/10 myself, not that it's a bad rating from my POV. If you like Ryan Reynolds and Mendelsohn as actors I reckon you'll like this.
First film in 10 years and he's credited with a movie that came out 4 years ago?

Demon Tongue

Starts of pretty gruesome, kids chopped up and put in a furnace, guy with an axe to his head.
Film then jumps forward, god know how long then four paranormal students get much more than they bargained for at a secluded beach volleyball complex.

The acting is dreadful , the filming is dire, the story itself does have some merit.
How the hell did this even get made and more to the point why have I just watched it, has bad a film as you will ever see

Not even worth a 0/10

Saw Spotlight yesterday. Amazing characters and star cast. Quite a good paced movie although it is 2hrs long does not seem dragged. Some great acting by Ruffalo and Keaton along with Liev. Deserved Academy award

Also, finally came along to see The Hunt for the Red October. Good cat and mouse chase movie. Classic!

Looks like it's a short - 55 mins. Maybe a TV movie?

Why does it bother you so much anyway?
It doesn't. Found it odd that he didn't understand what I was saying.

On that note, it's a strange movie. It's full length but half of it was made by him and the other half was "user generated". All in all 85 people contributed to the script.

Central Intelligence
Was really looking forward to this as I really like The Rock and find Kevin Hart quite funny but this film was very forgettable. Had a few funny jokes and had a strong start but just descended into mediocrity and felt really long. There are tons of better buddy cop movies out there 5.5/10

I might give this a go but although I like The Rock, I just don't find Kevin Hart funny.

Ride Along and Get Hard were awful.
