Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Saw Demolition Man last night after seeing it recommended in this thread, bloody loved it

Watched a bunch of films on holiday

Inside Men (Korean Movie) - Decent, intruiging political/crime thriller, with enough twists and turns to keep you interested (even if some of them are quite predictable). I know that I enjoyed it, but it's not really that memorable 3 weeks later

Eddie the Eagle - By the numbers underdog sports film. It's nice enough, the two leads are good fun and it'll raise a smile... it's no Cool Runnings though.

Race - Film about Jesse Owens, who's real-life story is strong enough to carry the film, but it doesn't really go beyond that to say anything new or interesting, or give a particularly different insight into the man. The period stuff is all very nicely done, and there's a surprisingly decent turn from Jason Sudekis in a more serious role, but I hoped for a little more. Still enjoyed it though.

Mr. Right - A film written by Max Landis, that you can tell is written by Max Landis. I'd rather watch this chick flick then any other bog-standard chick flick mind you, but mainly due to Sam Rockwell being Sam Rockwell.

Warcraft -
Just a mess. Some of it looks nice, some of it looks shit. Some of it makes sense, a lot of it does not. Character motivations are questionable at best, and at worst just make no sense, and frankly, the lore just isn't that interesting. The whole thing is predictably disappointing.

Grimsby - Urgh. Not good. To be fair, there are one or two decent chuckles to be had, but it doesn't save what is a pretty awful film.

Shutter - completely crap horror movie.

Conjuring 2 - Much much better then the first film thanks in large part to having a much better final third then the other one. The premise is creepy enough, the acting is fine (save some awfully cringeworthy ORIGHT GUVNOR slang at the begnning, where every single English slang word is used in the first 5 minutes) and there are a couple of legitimately good jump scares. I however didn't find Joker Nun to be half as scray as other people.

As a side note, even in other countries, horror movies attract the very worst kind of cinema audience.

The Legend of Tarzan - For a film about Tarzan, there isn't really a lot of Tarzan. It's more about the uninteresting English prick who used to be Tarzan... which makes anytime he is Tarzan seem less interesting by default. The vine swinging is cool, but there is literally about 30 seconds worth of it.

Now You See Me 2 - Bar a rather excellent heist scene involving throwing a playing card around, this is a pretty uninspring/forgetful sequel.

Took my son to see this last week and felt like I'd mislead him.

Completely awful Hollywood remake. I literally burst out laughing at the last scene, which I'm pretty sure isn't the reaction the film was trying to provoke.
Ahh makes sense. I'm not sure how well the original has aged but I know that I loved it when I first saw it.

Ab Fab, the movie

Clearly aimed at her indoors, it goes from London high fashion to Cannes riviera glamour. Lots of women appearing as themselves, most of whom I had never heard of. On the plus side, Joanna Lumley is still class. 5/10

Just watched Abandoned on Netflix USA , came out last year, based on a true story from 1989 about four guys sailing from New Zealand to Tonga, the boat gets hit by a huge wave and capsizes, if I hadn't known it was based on true events would never have believed the story that unfolded...if anyone watches it, they will get the irony of that. Dominic Purcell is the only familiar face, great movie though, well worth watching.
Another on Netflix USA is Colonia, again based on true events, even more unbelievable than the above though, set during and in the aftermath of Pinochet's coup in 1973, two German citizens caught up in the turmoil end up in a camp where torture victims are taken, imagine the Magdalene Sisters being run by Charles Manson and combining elements of the Pinochet and Hitler regimes, with a bit of the Waco cult thrown in and you have some idea. Spine chilling. Emma Watson plays one of the young Germans trying to get out of the cult.

So, I found perhaps the most intriguing film ever on a torrent site. It is not a porn movie, but it sure sounds like it. The stunning classic Beneath the valley of the Ultra Vixens:

Believe it or not even in Smalltown USA there are still people who are unfulfilled and unrelieved in the midst of plenty. Levonna & Lamar could have the perfect relationship if it were not Lamar's obsession with rear entry. After submitting to the one last time Levonna comes up with a plan. While Lamar is trying find other tail to try his technique on, Levonna becomes Lola with aid of a wig and a Mexican accent. A Mexican cocktail later Lola finally has Lamar straight, but he wasn't awake for it. The gay marriage counselor, attracted to Lamar's problem, couldn't help them and Lemar must finally seek redemption at the church of Rio Dio Radio and the laying on of hands by Sister Eufaula Roo.

So, which one will take the plunge and watch it? @pauldyson1uk , @Dirty Schwein ?

Midnight In Paris
This was a nice surprise. I'm not really into Woodey Allen films but switched this one on and really enjoyed it. Loved the warm lighting, the cinematography, the soundtrack etc. Technically it was fantastic. The story was pretty unique and Owen Wilson does a great job here. It's humorous as well, with some great naturalistic dialogue. If you're missus wants to watch a romantic film, this is a good shout as there's plenty to enjoy even if you're not into the romantic storyline 8/10

Wow, wtf? The parental advisory is interesting.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.

Mildly amusing, fractionally titillating post-pub zombie horror comedy. Watch with low expectations and it more or less delivers. Only saw the end in mute cos I needed to listen to some opera to culture back up.

Won't advice anyone tired from transfer wankfes...muppetry.

Batman: The Killing Joke
What was one of the more anticipated DC stories to be released in the end became a giant flop. They added a 30 minute prelude, which had nothing to do with the overall story and was really pedestrian. I get that they were trying to develop Batgirl's character but the characterization they accomplished could have been done in one scene. Once the killing joke story begins, it's pretty good. Very faithful to the comic but I just cant ignore that horrible first act. Yuck 5/10

Jason Bourne

Not too bad, actually. After the initial issue of jumping between about six or seven countries a minute, it develops into a fairly entertaining film which manages to kind of feel like it has a point, even if it's unnecessary after the third one. It's got a few good action sequences (although one gets a bit over the top), and the fights are still gritty as they were in the originals. A solid cast too, with most of the characters having some sort of motivation which creates reasonable enough intrigue to enjoy it, even if the ending becomes fairly predictable. A lot better than I expected it to be though.

7/10

I'm glad it isn't total shit. Watched a rerun of Bourne Identity last night on whatever channel. Great trilogy.

I'd still hold Identity as being the best of the trilogy, great movie. The new one probably would come last out of all the Damon movies if they were to be ranked, but it's still a good watch is far, far more memorable and enjoyable than the one with Renner a couple of years ago that just didn't really do anything.

I fell asleep watching the Renner one on a plane and never bothered going back to it- not a big fan of his tbh. I'm not sure how I'd rank the three originals- it's such a consistent set. The only scene that irks me in Identity, having seen it again last night, is the stupid bit when he jumps down the stairwell using that dead guy as a cushion. No way anyone could survive that without multiple serious injuries.

I feel like each of the movies have one scene where they do something slightly ridiculous that's out of place, but they get away with it because most of the action seems authentic.

And the Renner one was dull. Not even bad, as such, just very dull to the point where I can't remember the name of a single character from it.

Can't think of any particularly jarring scenes in Supremacy or Ultimatum- maybe the car crash underground?

Yeah, I remember little barring the opening scene of the Renner one.

He definitely died in the Moscow car crash.

Yeah, that was the one I meant, when he rams the guy in the jeep. Would probably get a nasty bout of whiplash if you reversed off a multi-storey car park too.

My review is in bold.

Wasn't crap, wasn't that good. Just average. They should have left it as a trilogy because it doesn't really add anything of value.

Special shout out to Tommy Lee Jones' eye luggage and invincible SWAT trucks.

Just watched it and would it give a 7/10 as well. I really enjoyed it. For me, I cant think of a trilogy that is as good as the Bourne ones.
Anyway, this was fun, and action packed. I didnt realise how much shakycam they use for fight scenes until this one near the end.

Double post, but also watched BFG. Loved it. For me, 2016 has done my childhood a good service with this and Jungle book :D

I'd agree....certainly wasn't the best Bournce film, pretty muc more of the same as the previous films. Ffs what happened to Julia Stiles...use to be a looker.

Yeah this bugged me, way too many cuts during the fight scenes, hard to tell what was going on at times.

Yeah it's really good. Manages to have that romantic Paris-type feeling of making you want to go there, whilst also acknowledging that most places/eras are somewhat tainted by nostalgia. Really liked the guy playing Hemingway too, struck me as a somewhat accurate portrayal.

Finding Dory
After the first 20 minutes, where it felt like it was a kids movie, it came to live. Introduced some decent new characters, such as hank the octopus. The ending was funny, not the kind of scene you would expect based on the rest of the film. 9/10
Can i ask, is the film scary in anyway. Like dark jumpy scenes with sharks or anything. I have a three year old who wants to see it but have a feeling she'd get scared at something like that.

Ive a 2 year old so watched with that in mind. From what I can remember the main issue was parent loss, dory swims around a lot in thedark looking for them.

Just remembered a glowing squid chases them very early on, that was loud and frantic. Once they get to the aquarium it becomes a really sweet film, some nice character your daughter/son will enjoy. Nice cameo from idris elba.

Thanks for that mate. Shes quite good with understanding emotions of other people. She just gets abit freaked out by loud scary stuff. Think we're gonna opt for that secret life of cats instead.

Terminator Salvation: Civilisation is lost, but great dentistry survives at least.

I'm watching The Day After Tomorrow for some reason, it's even shitter than I remember and where the hell do those Wolves come from?

Jason Bourne - 6/10
Decent storyline, good acting, good cast and good action. However the camera work spoilt everything for me - action sequences were a blur, and it felt nauseating at times because of the constant camera shake.

The camera shaking has been part of the previous Bournes right? It was mentioned in the honest trailer and I just couldnt remember it.
Even the new one, I didnt even take notice until near the end (but wasnt really looking out for it).

Gran Torino

I don't think I've actually ever seen a Clint Eastwood film, but I've seen bits and pieces. Really good film, I liked it a lot. Its actually funnier than most comedies and Clint Eastwood is freaking immense.

Problem I had with it was the acting of the other main actors. They were on the whole very poor and brought this brilliant film down a peg or two.

7/10
