Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I think torture porn has had its day tbh.

See I really like supernatural films and don't mind the occasional Gore fest if there's justification for said gore. August Underground had no story and was very realistic, making me wonder why I was even watching it... I felt like a dirty schwein

Pretty much the same has me , not seen August Underground, its gets some pretty bad reviews.

The Lobster

This is right up my street. Brilliantly dark comic satire looking at the way society pigeonholes love and relationships. As many laugh out loud moments as there were disturbing ones and the sort of film I'll be thinking about for days and feel the need to tell everyone I know that they have to watch it. If you like stuff like Blue Jam (any Chris Morris really) or Black Mirror then you probably will enjoy it too. Also nice to see Keith from The Office get some more work. "You'll notice the targets are single"

The Odd Couple (1968)

Great fun, excellent performances. 9/10

Rain Man (dunno)

Even Tom Cruise was good. 8/10

1989 I think, Rainman

Edit-1988

Just something about Valeria Golino....

Yup, she was great...in many ways. Ray should've binned that rude plonker Charlie and buggered off with her in the Buick.

I watched 10 Cloverfield Lane the other day and enjoyed it. It's very good for 90 minutes and then the ending is a bit... out there. There really wasn't any need to link it to the Cloverfield 'mythology' except box office and, I guess, setting up a sequel? And it was a bit weird how Mary Elizabeth Winstead, turned into Ripley so quickly, but those are some minor gripes and the film is entertaining enough, Goodman notably is excellent (as usual).

I thought she showed lots of fighting spirit right off the bat so I didn't find it jarring when she went into 'Ripley' mode. Yes, the ending is very divisive, I personally didn't mind too much although it felt a bit like it was tacked on.

Smiley
With an urban legend of a masked killer with a smile carved on his face is spread around a university campus, a mentally fragile woman is tormented by the killer... but is he real or in her head? By the numbers slasher flick that was SO up it's own arse, it pretty much tells the audience that the film will become a franchise... clearly that didn't work out. Forgettable garbage 2/10

Ichi The Killer

A sado-masochistic gang member is on the search his his boss' killer and finds Ichi, a psychotic man who he uses to torture himself and his enemies. Uber violent asian action/horror film. It's a little slow in places but overall I really enjoyed it. The violence was done really well and the characters were quite intriguing. Not to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it more this time round (watched it many moons ago but was stoned so missed most of the storyline!). Good film 7.5/10

That's @Spoony 's favourite movie iirc

Not my favourite, but yeah I loved it. Mehro does and all, I think. Rainy Dog is a must see, as well as Visitor Q and Audition. Gozu is a decent watch and all. Shame I don't have the time and patience to watch movies anymore, though, Don.

99 Homes - pretty decent, I'll give anything with Michael Shannon a watch.
Inside Out - Worthy of the hype, a wonderful film.
Nina Forever - Decent at times, misjudged at others, the girl has amazing boobs.
Tangerine - Totally insane, often hilarious, well worth watching.
Gambit - Listen to Kermode, this is awful. Treat yourself to a clip of Cameron Diaz's accent though, it's laughably bad, the only funny thing in the film though.

I saw the light Biopic about Hank Williams (the original one). Impressive turn by Hiddlestone, given that he has no reputation as a singer. The rest was rather average. 5/10

I'm off to Tokyo on Friday so I caught up on some anime:

Akira - thought this was brilliant, the animation was astonishing at times. Also interesting to see how many films have stolen from it, Chronicle been one that immediately came to mind. Also the Trapper Keeper episode of South Park now makes more sense

Spirited Away - what a terrific film, rich, imaginative, beautifully animated, funny.

Grave of the Fireflies - found this extremely emotionally manipulative. The two kids aren't characters, just animated cuteness. Disappointed.

Ponyo - very sweet, more lovely animation, great voicework from the likes of Liam Neeson and Tina Fey. Aimed at a much younger audience than the other two Ghibli films I watched but I still enjoyed it.

You should watch Princess Mononoke. Its arguably the best of the lot in that list.

I'll second the Princess Mononoke recommendation. Spirited Away is probably my favourite Ghibli film as well.

I think Grave of the Fireflies is the best of the lot. The Wind Rises is my favourite right now. It used to be Mononoke.

Just saw The Jungle Book in the big IMAX/Atmos theatre here. Brilliant adaptation which showed real homage to the book while pinching a couple of the best features from the Disney version and added a few of its own.

Visually it is stunning but the best part of it is the casting. Murray, Kingsley, Elba, Johansson and the kid playing Moghli are absolutely perfect in their roles.

This is one to watch on the highest quality screen you can find.

Zootropolis - Fifteen minutes into this film and I was worried. But as soon as Judy made it to Zootropolis, the film took off. The comedy and meaning (formulaic with a twist) behind the film were both spot on. 8.5/10

The Gift - Put this on as I had seen a trailer in the cinema ages ago and never saw it and noticed it was on Netflix now so thought I'd give it a whirl.

Pleasantly surprised, thought it was very good. Edgerton did a pretty good job of playing the weird old school friend and created genuine tension. That said the ending was pretty good too, left it ambiguous but I think...

He didn't rape her and it was Simon's baby. Gordo pretty much just wanted to mess with his head and judging from his character I don't think he would have done it

8/10

I really liked that film. Very tense without the need of stupid jump scares or gore. This is more horror than most horror films these days.

That is an odd film, I've got the dvd somewhere. I tried a couple of Takashi Miike's other films too- Gozu, Visitor Q and Audition. The first two were fecking weird- some good bits, but mainly odd. Audition is excellent. Real film of two halves. It scared my missus though.

Watched Capote for the second time last night. It goes without saying that Hoffman is just breathtaking in the role, but the film itself is equally as good. It never shies away from painting Capote as a narcissistic manipulator but at the same time the inner conflict he's going through is palpable, and so effectively shown through Hoffman. Probably one of my favourite films.

Abducted/LA Slasher

I feel betrayed. When I was last in HMV I grabbed five films because they had this five for £20 thing. One of them was "Abducted" just to make up the numbers. It's called LA Slasher in other places, but the cover here has Dave Bautista (he of Guardians of the Galaxy and Spectre) holding a gun, so I took it to be this Taken rip-off, and grabbed it expecting a bit of fun (because I like Dave).

He's in two scenes, for about maybe ten minutes of the film. The rest of it is this serial killer voiced by Andy Dick (the words "voiced by Andy Dick" are now going to haunt my nightmares) going around killing "celebrities" (basically takes on the Kim Kardashian/Snooki/Paris Hilton types). Other cast members include Danny Trejo, Eric Roberts, and Tori Black. You'll find better acting in a lot of Tori's other films...or so I'm told.

It might actually be the worst film I've ever seen. I'm making a genuine effort here to think of worse, and I'm really struggling. The acting is painful (the people I've mentioned are barely in it, but it's like they turned up, did a take, and left), the editing is awful, and I'm actually ashamed of myself for buying this. I would not wish this experience on my worst enemy.

PURE SUFFERING/10
totally agree with this, it is one of the worst films I have seen and I have seen some bad ones.
I felt like I needed a shower after watching it , it was that bad.
Pure suffering /10 was being generous.

For the lads who are into the shit movies, any of you seen Halloween III Season of the Witch? It's hilarious.

You should have seen my face when I saw it as a young kid coming off the first two. I thought I taped the wrong film but no, it was just awful. Has a cult following for some reason

God knows why it was called Halloween 3, had nothing to do with the other 2, but is is not that bad a film.
Couldn't stand it, but maybe that's because I was young and expected a slasher.

Originally, Halloween was meant to be a series of films that are unrelated apart from the name, but after this film flopped, they went back to Myers

Brooklyn Rules (2007): 7/10

Surprisingly good movie. Expected some cheap imitation of Goodfellas but the script was very decent, simple yet still intriguing enough to make a solid crime/drama movie with it.

Every film is a cheap imitation of Goodfellas.

I'm guessing the cult following comes from it being so unbelievably stupid and strange. When I was in college myself and a couple of mates used to love going out buying these kinds of cheap DVDs. The story and even the names of the characters (Conal Cochran - the evil Irishman) in Halloween III had us in stitches watching it. I mean, they somehow manage to steal a good chunk of Stonehenge and bring it to the US.

If you enjoyed the film that much I'd suggest reading the book as well. It's a bit of a tough read due to the language used but really interesting, especially the investigation of the crime scene.

Yeah I must read it at some stage.
