Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Also - bit late to the party but I really, really enjoyed Ant-Man. Didn't take itself seriously at all, was very funny, and for a superhero movie, actually had a great supporting cast who all added to the fun. Michael Pena stole every scene he was in, especially loved his Tarantino style storytelling. Wish all the Avenger films were like this, instead of all the bland, same-y, over-serious films with identical final acts we've seen in the last few years. Thanks to Edgar Wright for this one I guess.

The Room
Just watched this again at a screening. Never gets boring  oh lord what was Tommy thinking 10/10

Dude Bro Party Massacre III

Followed The Room with this, which I'm sure will also become a cult classic. It was shot and edited like a 90s film, even with ad-breaks that are edited out. Brilliant. Would recommend if you want to have a laugh with a few mates and loved cheesy slashers from the 90s 8/10

If you liked these I'd suggest Darjeeling Limited as well. Wes Anderson is my favourite director

I'm kinda working my way through his stuff at the moment, Darjeeling's on my list at some point. Really like his style.

After Life

Five young people wake up dead. Washed up by the tide they scramble to an abandoned beach house, soon realizing that the perpetual night and blasts of pain suggest this is some version of hell. Between in-fighting and attacks by a demonic shadow creature, they recall the collapse of the nightclub that brought them here - and begin seeing hope of a second chance in the cabin's two mysterious paintings...

Pretty decent, not what I was expecting but I enjoyed it.

5/10

The Exorcism of Anna Ecklund

Possession films are my fav and I have seen many of then and this will go down has one of the worst I have seen.
Slow and nothing that has not been done before in almost every possession film, the acting is slow and labored , the script was bad, the music was awful and with the worst ending of a possession film EVER.

0.5/10

Deadpool - Was fecking awesome. I'm so over the whole superhero genre, with their stupid outfits and juvenile plot lines. Even worse, they take themselves so seriously. But this was gleefully refreshing. 9/10

In anticipation of watching BVS I decided to rewatch a load of superhero movies. One thing I took from it.

Both Avengers film are basically the same story. Which begs the question, why is the first considered better then the second?

Probably because it was new. People were excited about seeing Iron Man, Hulk and Thor all on the same screen. Once it'd been done once, there was nowhere to really go with it.

Cloverfield Lane. Would be 8/10, last act reduces it to a 5. feck you whoever forced them to do that ending.

I like the ending a lot... though granted, it would have been cooler if the film wasn't called Cloverfield Lane. (though I completely understand why it is... it's probably one of the main reasons this films made money)

But yeah, really enjoyed it... thought Goodman was excellent and the films twists and turns were very well handled I thought.

Really? I thought the ending brought the film down too, felt like they rushed it and probably had a ton of endings available and had no idea which to go with. I just had far more interest in watching the bunker situation play out. I think they could have explored a lot more with it though I appreciate we were lucky to get as much as we did considering the title.

How did you watch something again for the first time? Do you have a time machine?

The Boy
Went to watch The Witch but because I didn't want to wait for an hour, I watched this instead. Right off the bat, I would say Maggie from the Walking Dead is . Ok so it's a film about an american woman who goes to baby sit a young boy in a closed off retreat somewhere in the UK for a few months. The boy she is babysitting is in fact a creepy doll and as you probably have guessed, spooky shit happens. This film was shot and lit really well and had really good acting, surprisingly for a horror film. However, it relied on too many jump scares, half of which worked. The story was decent though and did quite enjoy the ending. It didn't really add anything new to the genre though 7/10

The Abandoned

A woman takes work as part of a 2-person night security team in an abandoned hotel. She discovers a room that is not on the blueprints and a haunting begins from when she enters this room. Very low budget but it had great atmosphere. The scares though were at a minimum and I didn't really like the ending so much as I predicted it a mile off. There's still something to enjoy here 6.5/10

Exeter

A bunch of teens have a drug fueled party at a church that was built over an insane asylum for children. Suddenly, a demon gatecrashes. I knew what to expect as the first shot of the film is of a flabby ass that belongs to an addict 'woman'. It seemed tonally confused as I assumed it to be a horror comedy but reading about it, there are no comedy labels for the film genre... I laughed out loud twice during the first half of the film. The setup was really quite good but then it takes a plunge for the worse as the moments of comedy are replaced by non-stop cheap gore and it just falls in genre cliche after genre cliche. Was left really bored 5/10

Have you seen The VVitch? Whatd you reckon?

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Quite disappointed with this one. Not sure why they wanted to mirror so much from Star Wars, I was just annoyed with it. Worst film in the series, least exciting, but good looking though. Vader (extra-extra)lite had a nice voice behind mask as well. 6/10 I guess?

I was pretty disappointed too but surely you thought it was better than 1 and 2? 3 and the originals are much better though for me.

No, it really wasn't. Really contrived and full of annoying super coincidences. Space also feels extra small, and Ford and Fisher clearly phoned it in. I don't mind new people though, but McGregor, Neeson and even Jackson felt more natural in their roles. Yeah, lets forget Anakin for a bit. ;)

And it really isn't much exciting. Both Menace and Clones had scenes that trump anything in this one, like Duel of the Fates, or McGregor taking on Fett Senior.

I hope it's just JJ Abrams that is the problem, I disliked Star Trek and detested the second part of that.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Was next on my Wes Anderson list. Enjoyed this one, too. The narrative style and plot in general really, really reminded me of Arrested Development. You've got the regular narration, flashbacks, and a family feud to boot. More I could go into on that one which would kind of spoil it, though.

Hackman was very good, excellent performance from him. I'm not usually all that keen on Ben Stiller, but he gives a decent performance too. Like with Rushmore, good soundtrack in this one.

The one part that I was miffed at was Owen Wilson's part. I like a bit of Anderson's quirkiness, but his sort of absurd character felt more like something from a Fockers movie than this one. Not sure he was really all that necessary, either.

Also...

Wes Anderson likes killing dogs.:(

Batman v Yada Yada - not as atrocious as I'd been expecting. Zack Snyder is a total hack and this film is chaos but they crammed enough shit in the sandwich to keep me from falling asleep, so I'll give them that.

I mean, it's still completely shit. Just not a waste of my life. Oh my God I've wasted my life.

After reading that, I have no idea if I should see it or not!

It amazes me that some of these get cinema releases. Some sound very straight to DVD/Zone Horror fodder.

How come Rey had in-depth of the Millenium Falcon's engine systems, even that override mumbo jumbo, yet she didn't even know what the fecking ship looked like, mistaking it for a crappy freighter?:wenger:

His best one imo

And she understands droids and Chewbacca. Mastered the force in 3 minutes and she's mean with the sword. She's bound with the most powerful of powers, the power of Screenwriting!

And is a shite, wooden actress that no amount of plot conveniences can hide!

Not getting into that topic again.

Watched Batman VS Superman. It was a lot better then the critique of it. The plot was all over the place though with little link between scenes, making it quite jarring at times. There was also a lot in it, probably too much really. Still, loved Batman, the last fight, all the fights actually and the visuals were great. Thought all the things within it were pretty good viewing and they managed to get a story out of it somehow. Doomsday was perfect for what they needed him for and Lex Luthor was hit and miss.

I have the feeling that this is a review I can trust. Like the other poster though, I'm still not sure whether I should watch it or not.

Oh wait, here too actually, forgot they switched last night.

And I don't know why I teased you, I'm certain you'll have a better time than in afternoon or evening, without the god awful annoyance of mob of fanboys.
