Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Even though his cult was on the rise, I think Hitchcock's talent was in steep decline through the 60s.

His attempt to turn Tippi Hedren into the new Grace Kelly was always doomed - she lacked Kelly's spark. Mind you this was a tough role, and picture, for any female lead to shine in. The movie was flat and dull; and Hitch laid on the cod psychoanalysis with a trowel.

Plus the awful rape scene in which Hitch seems to have unleashed his own Id all over the set. The only thing worse was a scene in Frenzy with a close up of a girl being strangled to death. The Hayes Code was Hitchcock's best friend.
Having read up about Hitchcock's treatment of Hedren on beforehand, it left me with a bad taste in my mouth throughout.

Harbinger Down
A group of students and a few others investigate a wreckage that was left after Russian military experimentation on animals. They take it back to their ship and a shape-shifting alien starts pickign them off one by one. This was made by the guys that did the effects for the remake of The Thing before their work was replaced by CGI. This film is mainly done with practical effects, puppetry etc with CGI used minimally to remove strings etc but to be honest, some of the effects looked pretty poor. The film also borrowed heavily from the likes of alien, The Thing and Jaws to the point of plagerism even stealing some lines directly. The dialogue on the whole was pretty bad and the film felt quite boring 4/10

Just watched Blade Runner... That scene was definitely rape.

Hopefully the latest Tina Fey movie, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot isnt one of those where the funniest bits are in the trailer.

But this looks pretty fecking funney.

I thought for a point it was a Tina Fey movie the way you worded it.....she needs to follow up Mean Girls already, taking her time with a second written movie. TV's keeping her busy though.

Daddy's Home

With films like this you worry that the funny bits are all revealed in the preview clips. In this case things are worse. All of the vaguely funny bits are revealed in the pre-release clips but worse still they are much funnier than when they occur in the film. This is a total dud. Avoid.

Why do you keep watching Will Ferrell movies?

Aren't you the first person to pipe up in The Walking Dead thread that you don't understand why people both watching if they dislike it?

Very odd.

I have no idea other than eternal hope I guess. We were looking on the harddrive for a brainless Friday night comedy and this seemed to fit the bill. Sadly the comedy bit was missing. But I should know better as it is only once every 5 years or so that I don't mind one of his films.

Bone Tomahawk: Excellent little slow burner that mixes the traditional with the new very well. In turns smart, funny, horrific and absurd. Gets a bonus point for the song that plays over the end credits. 8/10

Mississippi Grind

A decent watch. Nothing spectacular about it. The journey takes you through the highs and lows of a gambler which is to be expected with a film about that subject. Ryan Reynolds' character was mysterious and confusing. A lot of the actions in it from him seem to be a setup but there's no indication of it. Feels like they would have wanted to expand on it but cut the time on that side of the story. Anyway, 6/10.

The Big Short

Would start with a disclaimer - unless it's a subject you held a passing interest in, you're not going to like it. If you were interested, I felt it was a well structured film. Some scenes dragged on but the jist was simply to tell the story and keep the audience engaged as much as possible and given the subject matter, it was done well enough. I liked Steve Carrell's work in this too. A good watch on the whole but nothing extraordinary that should make you actively go out and see it at the next opportunity for me. 7/10.

I watched it last night and was crying with laughter, some parts were silly but it was funny too. I haven't laughed at a film like that for ages. 10 out of 10 for me.

Which bits? The skateboard bit was mildly amusing I suppose. The bike bit was truly terrible though. Lazy cgi and even worse continuity (not using the bikes controls when it started moving).

The bits you mentioned and the basketball scene, I noticed the rubbish cgi on the bike part too hehe but it made me laugh more. I like Will Ferrell stuff though anyway. I have read quite a few other bad reviews and it is fair to say that its not the best made film in the world.

Fair enough.

I watched Heat again on TV the other day. Great 90s film. I miss that kind of cinema, everything seems to need a fecking superhero in it these days.

Deadpool I'm not a fan of superhero movies but this was great fun. I'm not a fan of Ryan Reynolds either but he was great in this. Good gory action, filthy jokes and an all round fun adult film. Roll on the inevitable sequel. 9/10

:smirk:

This has just popped up on Sky Movies. Going to give it a whirl. See what Le King is up to now that he's mixing it with the Hollywood crowd.

The Witch - something to wash the taste of Grimsby out of my mouth. What a film. Like Haneke doing brothers Grimm. Creepy.
Have high hopes for this one and I guess @Dirty Schwein is eagerly waiting for it too. Good to read a first positive review. From the trailer it looked like it aimed at creating an overall scary atmosphere rather than jump scares, is that the case?

I have also read some good reviews about this , cant wait.
Scary jumps are good , but I like the idea of the scary atmosphere, longing to see a scary film that leaves you scared when it is finished.

My favorite movie. Just so classy in the way it's directed and its locations. Today's movies can't touch the 90s for me.

Really loved this film, I'd still give it an 8 regardless of the song at the end credits.

Odd Thomas - I was wondering what the bloke who did The Mummy had also made so saw this and gave it a watch. It wasn't bad but seemed more like it should be a TV show than a film. I like Anton Yelchin and the plethora of fit birds kept my interest. Annoying CGI. Best bit was the ending...really well done and had me going. Good cast but mediocre story. 6/10.

Yes, it's more concerned with a growing sense of dread, which it builds beautifully. It's closer to The White Ribbon than say, The Blair Witch Project, although it does have some great horror too.
