Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Seen it, thanks :)

I like Hopkins, downloading it as we speak.

Is it just a coincidence all three recommendations are from 2007? Must've been a great year for movies.
That is weird indeed, I'm going to see what else came out in 2007 and watch one I didn't see yet aswell.

I actually saw for the first time last week so that suggestion is spot on with my preferred genre. Do you have something similar?

I really enjoyed Lincoln Lawyer and Prisoners too.

If you liked Zodiac and Prisoners maybe try The Pledge. Jack Nicholson actually acting.

Crime genre and something with a good script? Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Not quite crime but if you're looking for a clever thriller you can't go wrong with The Prestige, or Memento.

Did you watch Gone baby gone in the end Vato?

Ghost Writer is pretty good I though, and yeah The Pledge was a very good watch, very eerie film.

I was going to recommend Prisoners. Side Effects is a decent thriller. Try that?

Devil Seed
fecking god awful film, I only lasted 10 minutes and gave up. Was shot worse than a porno. Bloody shit. Best feature was the opening credits 0.5/10

They
Seems like the director didnt know what genre he was catering for. Not exciting enough to be a thriller and not scary enough to be a horror. Seems like an ok idea but the film was too tame. Slow paced and boring. The last 10 minutes were not too bad 4/10

Yep really worth a watch, good acting from all those involved and good story.

Jacob, you seen Se7en?

Seen it, liked it. A tad too gory for my liking though. Not that I can't stand gore but i prefer the script to be geared more towards psychology. This is why I love Hopkins, he is such an intriguing actor.

Cool, KKBB is high up on my 'to see list'.

Seen it, it was good. Can't remember much but I do know I recommended it to somebody else. 6/10ish.

Frances Ha - It felt like it could have existed in the same universe as the tv show 'Girls'. The Woody Allen influence was obvious but I didn't feel as alienated as I do everytime I watch an Allen film. The main character was likeable. Decent watch.

Saw Gravity the other night. Agree with everyone that has said it's a must see in 3D. It really was pretty spectacular. I thought both Bullock and Clooney were excellent. Film itself was very good in my opinion but would recommend people see it as a spectacle anyway.

Saw The Way, Way Back recently too and it reminded me a little bit of Adventureland. While the latter was set in the 80's both had a kind of 80's feel to them and i thought both were excellent films.

I thought Rockwell was his usual self in The Way, Way Back. He normally is the best actor in any film he's in and for me, this was no exception. Carrell was good in a very different role than we're used to seeing him in. It's funny and charming at times but you genuinely feel for the Jake Bugg lookalike lead character by the end. He puts in a great performance.

Oh I watched The way way back in the plane recently, I enjoyed it. Though it's quite a forgettable film, I have to say. However, the performances are good all around (especially Rockwell, as usual), and it has a nice feeling of intemporality about it. Worth a watch.

I also watched Europa Report in the plane, and I don't know whether it was the context that elevated it (reaaaaally bumpy flight in the middle of the night, which may have influenced my opinion on it), but I was really immersed in the film and thought the feeling of isolation and of being lost in space was pretty good. Some of the special effects are a bit cheap (especially a few weeks after seeing Gravity), but it's really worth a watch and does well with a limited budget. Interesting genre to do a "found footage" film I thought.

Really? I loved it.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's bad at all. It shits on something like The Worlds End for instance but when you take a character like Alan Partridge and put him a film you lose a lot of what makes him funny simply due to the constraints of the medium.

A film relies on a plot whereas with something like Mid Morning Matters he can just be sat in his studio taking calls and interviewing a guest. If you watch the film and MMM back to back there's really no contest. In fact, I'd go as far to say that one episode of MMM contains more proper 'lol' moments than the entire movie.

Also (genuine niggle), they fecked up his age again. He all of a sudden seems 10 years younger than the last tv series and about 20 years younger than the second series of IAP.

There's something fantastic about that film, in that despite it being about probably the worst military defeat of the US history, they manage somehow to make it look like a semi-victory cos Ben Cantact and Josh Halfwit manage to get in a couple of planes and shoot down a few Japanese fighters (they don't even shoot them down actually, they outmaneuver them and use their cunning to defeat them, it's ridiculous). I turned it off at one point, I just couldn't bear it, which meant I missed all the part with Alec Baldwin!

Hunger Games - Catching Fire - Colour me surprised... I really rather enjoyed this. It improved massively on the first film (a bigger budget certainly helped), advancing on the world-building aspect of the film, and doing a better job of fleshing out other characters taking part in the games. Like the first film, I actually thought the Games portion was the weakest bit of the film, though it wasn't as poor as the first film in that regard, and as such still managed to hold my attention.

Negatives would be that it's a bit long, and possibly takes itself a bit too seriously at times... but then it is all rather bleak, so I suppose the hyper serious tone is warranted. Oh, and the film, after going along for over 2 hours, suddenly seems to realise it needs to end pretty soon and so manages to shit out an ending in less then 5 minutes - which is both abrupt and a bit jarring... I realise it's setting up for the last film, but even still, I think a stronger ending would definitely have improved things.

A bit like the second Matrix film?

Gone baby gone

Pretty decent film with a few flaws and the worst casting decision ever with Casey Affleck as the main actor. Doesn't help that I don't really rate him as an actor but this role would have been perfect for someone like Jamie Foxx or Mark Whalberg for example, not for this plank with his girly voice. Ed Harris was a bit shit aswell I thought, Morgan Freeman was excellent as per usual.

6/10

Funny, I thought Casey Affleck was great in the role and the duo he formed with what's her name was quite original for the genre. As you say, you'd expect someone "harder" for the part, but he makes the most of the role and does really well I thought. Don't remember Harris being shit either, but I saw it a long time ago I have to say!
