Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Grave of the Fireflies, incredible movie. Best animated film I've seen, a must watch. If you've seen most of the films on top 250 but not that one, get to it.

I get sad just thinking about it.

Recent. And I've got The Secret in their Eyes on my to watch list, I think you've recommended it before.

I downloaded The City of Lost Children the other day... might watch it today.

Check out this pair, neither trailer does justice to either movie btw…. also as something lighter but also a smart movie, I thought Cyrus was really excellent, exactly my kind of comedy, very subtle, definitely worth a watch

Cell 211 very clever movie

Mother (korean) some of the photography in this is masterful

edit…

I just watched Captain America. I'd give it a 6/10 for effort. The only positive thing coming out of that movie for me was Hayley Atwell.

Christ, it killed me to see how many of those movies I had to delete. I'll have to get downloading fairly lively.

I get sad just thinking about it.

Very good film. The saddest film I've seen. Can't watch it again.

I just watched 'I Am Number Four'. It has a good story line to it. Its a pity this movie did not do well. It is one of six books I think. So far only one has come out and they made that a movie already. If there was a part two, which I am not too confident about, I would watch it. The book came out only last August and the movie came out this February. I really don't think they should have hurried with the movie.

Kagemusha - Doesn't quite reach the great heights of Ran but a fine film of colossal proportions.

Also watched Fanny och Alexander which I hadn't seen since I was a kid. It's a good film, filled with great performances and is nice to look at, but not sure if it deserves it's masterpiece tag.

Yep, it was a precursor to Ran or has he said a dress rehearsal. Have you seen Kaidan?

IMDb - Kwaidan (1964)

Well if Pete thought Kagemusha was fantastic, which it was in all fairness, he's in for a treat when he watches Ran. It's in my top three or four or five.

Anyone here seen 'The Conversation'? Coppola movie that stars Gene Hackman, who plays a paranoid surveillance expert. Its a strange strange film. Very non-Hollywoodesque and a good character study of a deeply guilty individual. Worth watching !

Anyone have recommendations for Netflix's Instant Watch flicks? Going to give 'Name of the Rose' a go tonight but open to suggestions.

Hmm I havent seen the movie. But the book is brilliant. I dont see Sean Connery being able to pull off that role.

Kagemusha was being discussed earlier and its there on instant watch. The instant watch on netflix went a bit shit recently. they dropped a lot of good titles but still have lots of classiscs. Umberto D. Smiles of a summer night. The sorrow and the pity. these are 3 from my very long queue that are still available for instant watch.

Ah good man. Thanks for the recommendations. I'm adding all three to my queue as well. 'Name of the Rose' and 'Foucault's Pendulum' are the only two Eco books I've read and I consider them both pretty much unfilmable. Yeah, I can't see Connery pulling off 'William of Baskerville' either, I'll know tonight.

The greatest movie ever sold Morgan Spurlock’s documentary about product placement is quite entertaining but guilty of leaving you wanting more. Although at the end of the film he claims that none of the companies that sponsored the film had any editorial say you’re still left with the feeling that it doesn’t matter because throughout the film you get the feeling he was cuckolded into basically having no opinion, maybe that is the point he is trying to make, that by selling out the message was lost but that is a dangerous game to play when you’re making a documentary and as all your left with is some entertaining skits and information that barely scratches any surface it’s safe to say he lost. Great idea and interesting concept but unfortunately they just don’t work.

North By Northwest I saw this being mentioned in the other thread and people claiming it has aged badly and wasn’t as good as it they remembered but on my first viewing I absolutely loved it. Yes some of the sets were wobbly and the effects laughable but my god it has Cary Grant playing drunk what is not to love.

Manhattan Another film I really enjoyed as Woody Allen muses on love, materialism, loyalty, truth and just about anything he can get his hands on, not sure whether I prefer this or Annie Hall but this is full of some excellent dialogue (Oh really, he was a genius, Helen's a genius and Dennis is a genius. You know a lot of geniuses, y'know. You should meet some stupid people once in a while, y'know, you could learn something.) and I thought Mariel Hemingway was fantastic as his young love interest.

Rio Better than I was expecting, only watched it for Tracy Morgan and he was hardly in it but entertaining enough and worth watching just for Jermaine Clement (flight of the Conchords) who plays a brilliant villain.

To Catch a Thief Although I did enjoy this I was slightly underwhelmed with the reputation that preceded it and the personnel involved I was expecting more. Don’t get me wrong the acting was good, Grace Kelly was sumptuous and Cary Grant is basically the living embodiment of charisma and makes anything worth watching but the plot was so obvious that I had everything figured out within the opening 10 minutes.

Things to do in Denver when you’re dead I’ve been meaning to watch this for years after someone had given me a basic idea of what it was about, or so I thought, turns out they’d made it out to be a completely different film than it actually is giving the impression the lead character goes about living vicariously because he knows he hasn’t got long to live. In reality it is quite dark, although there is plenty of black humour thrown in especially from a Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvetesque Christopher Walken. Glad I watched it even if it wasn’t as expected. Would have been better with Berbatov.

Taxi Driver Another film I’ve been meaning to get around to watching but I always thought the hype behind it and how much I enjoyed Mean Streets might leave me underwhelmed. Boy was I wrong, this is quite simply a fantastic film, DeNiro’s performance alone should merit it a classic, facially, movement wise and dialogue delivery was all spot on to really convey his decaying mental state. The ending sequence if left to someone else could have been awful but with an on top of his game Scorcese you are instead left with a real intrigue to whether what you’re watching is reality or not.

The Devil's Double Tells the story of Saddam Hussein's psychotic son's double. Where can I start? The acting was diabolical and wasn't helped by the fact that they used Caucasians with what sounded like broken Russian accents to come across as Iraqis. And to add to that the film was littered with HUGE historical inaccuracies. But it was an enjoyable watch nonetheless.

Hanna - The character is odd, the movie was odd, but it was interestingly odd. Saoirse Ronan, bless her name, really impressed me with her screen abilities. Story-wise it didn't seem all that interesting, but the character of Hanna is interesting enough to keep you watching. 7/10

Rise of the Apes - Surprised at how much I liked the movie - thought it applied much to the selfishness of humanity these days, and how more "human" the apes seemed than the humans did. 8/10

Horrible Bosses - Not my type of genre, comedies that're rated R, but this one caught me by surprise. Actually made me laugh throughout the movie despite the ridiculous plot, and again, even if I didn't like these types of movies. Much better than Hangover II and Bridesmaids, IMO. 7/10

Yeah I found that odd. I haven't seen it yet (though I read a few articles on it and Latif Yahia and it obviously sounds like a classic "inspired by real events" movie) but the casting of Dominic Cooper just seemed a little uncontemporary. It's not exactly "Soul Man" but I find it really odd that no one during the making of this thought, "isn't this sort of blacking up?"

The odd thing was that they casted a few authentic Arab actors, but then it clearly showed they'd run out of them, so they picked up a few Brits and Aussies, gave them some shoe polish and asked them to put on their best Ivan Drago impression.

Blitz- Jason Statham playing...well himself again only this time he has a lower budget and a queer sidekick. Honestly films like this I don't think any thought goes into at any level. Pick a few British actors, one hardman, one mentor, one nutcase and one eye candy then choose any clichéd script you like and job done. Nothing interesting about this movie and its not even got that much action in it you make up for it.

3/10
