Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Couldn't agree more about Jason Sudeikis. In fact, I think I've moaned about him previously in this thread (or somewhere else). He's yet another SNL cnut who is being promoted by the 'right' people despite lacking any sort of charm or ability.

Exactly. It's all frat guy smugness mixed with misplaced arrogance. It's the kind of role that Dennis from Always Sunny could pull off, but once again, even that role is predicated on the fact that everyone else thinks he's a cnut. That's what those roles rely on to be funny. Otherwise it's just some cnut who's arrogant and smug. I've only seen him in 3 things, and in all of them he's the same smug cnut, and yet actually ends up winning the day, or getting the girl, or being generally tolerated by other people, none of whom even attempt to punch him in the face at the earliest opportunity..It's like they actually think we'll be rooting for this twat. Why? He's a twat.

Do you watch 30 Rock at all? He had a recurring part in that and he came across exactly how you describe him there. Yet every fecker remotely associated with movies or tv in the US seems to think he's the funniest thing they've ever seen. As you said it's like he's writing these scripts just to get off with beautiful women, like some sort of much-more-expensive Maroon 5 video, except other people are doing it for him (the writing, not the getting off with beautiful women).

Yes, but the actress wasn't...She was 12....I was sort of talking to the director, in my head...Or something...I just found it all quite disturbing. But not in the way they presumably intended.

It doesn't make Jason Sudeikis any less of a twat though.

fair point , I can argue about Sudeikis.
Did not know she was only 11 while filming

Imo, he wasn't too bad in 30 Rock, probably because his role didn't really have some super funny lines and he was more just a normal type of character there. As for the other few movies I saw him in, I just cant stand him

I do like 30 Rock, but I haven't watched it in any great detail. Only the odd ep here and there when I can get it. A bit like coke, but without the following days remorse. Oddly it's usually on planes I do. 30 Rock that is, not coke.

I've never seen any of his SNL stuff. I think the first thing I saw was Hall Pass this year - which was terrible. But everything about it was terrible, not just him - but then he's just become ubiquitous, and playing the same person. A bit like Seth Rogan did a couple years back. Except, again, without any of Rogan's charm (which is already wearing thin)...It's baffling.

There are scenes in Horrible Bosses where it does genuinely just look like he's crow barred into the writers room and gone "hey, wouldn't it be really cool if I banged this chick here?"...and everyone's gone "Wow, yeah Sudeikis, you're a genius!"...There's literally no call for it. At one point there's a minor sub plot about him sleeping with Aniston which can only be explained by him telling the director "Hey, wouldn't it be really cool if I banged Aniston?...I mean I know it's got nothing to do with my story, and I only interact with her once in the whole film, but hey, it's me, I should bang her. People will love that!"..It serves absolutely no purpose. Except to establish him as some kind of smooth lothario, when evidently, he's a fat grinning uber chump.

Plus pairing him with two eminently likeable actors in Bateman & Day just made him come across as even more of a obvious cnut.

She was good though. On reflection I think I'm remembering that film a little more negatively than I did at the time. It's really only the last 20 minutes or so that went cuckoo.

The Untouchables

Was told it was good, decided to watch it, concluded that it wasn't.

Having taken a while to consider my score, I'd give it:

2 cans of Stella out of a possible 5, which is considerably less than I'd have to drink if I were to enjoy this film.

I forgot that Jamie Foxx is in Horrible Bosses too...And is very funny. Basically everyone in it is very funny apart from Jason Sudeikis ...and 40% of the script.

The thing about Sudeikas' character in 30 Rock is that out of all of Liz Lemon's boyfriends, he's the only one without a joke. Jon Hamm is thick, your man Dennis is a psycho etc. He just plays the typical bland American nice-guy love interest. He sucks.

Saw Captain America today. It was good, with the exception on one scene where they throw a spanner in the works of the love side-plot for no reason at all, which goes nowhere. I also stayed to the end to see the trailer for The Avengers, like an utter nerd. Hataks etc.

I watched Source Code. It had some nice ideas but none of them are explored particularly well. I found the tone of the film boring and out of touch with the ideas. I particularly didn't like the schmaltzy ending. And the more I thought about it the more I disliked it.

The lasting idea of this guy (Gyllenhaal), living out his life in someone elses body. Without anyone knowing - including his partner - like some parasitic rapist, is framed in a happily ever after cliche. This is not a happy ending, it's actually rather disturbing. (And is itself a sc-ifi/horror staple).

The film has been compared to Groundhog Day but that film - a comedy - managed to cultivate the genuine sense of despair and isolation that was sorely missing by Source Code.

Cold Fish - Gorey and weird Japanese family drama/organized crime flick. Decent.

Got to agree with Spoony who was hyping Sunset Boulevard on here. Easily one of the great classics.

High and Low. Another great Kurosawa film. I have yet to see one that isn't. This one is like an old school, less gay and more realistic CSI kind of film.

Recommend me some films, Dre.

Current, recent, medium old, old, noirs, foreign? what are you looking for Spoons, the only very recent movie I've seen that I would feel comfortable recommending to you is probably "The secret in their eyes" (Argentina) it left a very deep impression with me

Tell me what genres youre looking for, I have extensive lists of movies that mattered to me

I just got back from seeing four movies at the cinema, all probably worth it for most people.

Cowboys and Aliens Go in with low expectations and I think you'll find this pretty fun. Plot's quite shaky, but not awful and the action is quite good.

Horrible Bosses Much better than I expected. Jokes come pretty quickly and one right after the other. Agree about previous comments here about Jason Sudeikis. I don't mind his brash, arrogant character as much as everyone else does, but the moments where he overexerted it were pretty distracting. Absolutely no reason for him to bang anybody in this film.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Really liked this one. Thought the CGI was very well done and even though you know the ending going in, it was still a very fun and engaging movie.

Bridesmaids I somewhat regret watching this on the same day as Horrible Bosses and long after I've read review after review about how good it is. I do think it was very funny, but it suffered (in my mind only) by not having the quick pace of Horrible Bosses. It went through periods of laugh out loud antics into some sad, quiet or musical scenes. Overall a very good movie, but watching two comedies in one day that have different styles was not a great idea on my part.

Recent. And I've got The Secret in their Eyes on my to watch list, I think you've recommended it before.

I downloaded The City of Lost Children the other day... might watch it today.

Oranges and Sunshine The true story of a Nottingham social worker who ended up uncovering the scandal of forced deportation of poor kids to the colonies right up until 1970. A superb British and Australian cast, with David Wenham and Hugo Weaving the stand outs, make this well worth watching. That it is a true story makes it all the more heartbreaking at times and indeed the only real criticism is that it is a tad depressing. Not that there is much of a way around this since it is a true story. Highly recommended. 8.5/10
