Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I watched some French film the other night, can't remember the name of it but Audrey Tautou was in it so I'm going to give a 10/10.

You have good taste, Mick. :D

Senna : Beyond The Speed Of Sound

First of all if you're coming into this expecting a straight and objective documentary then flush your expectations down the shitter because unbiased this is not.

It's very much a narrative driven docu-drama almost and paints Senna as a saint with the villainous roles being taken on by rival Alain Prost and then president of the FIA Jean Marie Balestre (who to be fair, was actually a cnut).

Whilst flippant to ignore some of the early incidents instigated largely by Senna (Portugal 88, San Marino 89) in the rivalry with Prost, it did reveal some of the politics that clearly favoured the Frenchman and that as a youngster I wasn't aware of at the time.

In that respect it paints a better picture of Senna than I remember him as and if anything the thing that shines through is that the guy was born to be a racing driver. There's some breath taking footage and the audio is unreal at times juxtaposed with a bunch of talking heads commentary from friends, colleagues and journalists who all knew him. In fact the only real weakness at times is that some of these talking head sections slow the pace down (one American guy in particular is almost excrutiatingly OTT) but by and large they are almost as fascinating as the footage.

It clocked it at just under 3 hours long but like the great man himself the time just flew by (In fact I was a little miffed that they ignored his 1993 Donningtion race and skimmed over his time with Lotus). In that respect, I think the narrative style structure helped with the pacing and the build up to the tragedy at the end is genuinely moving. We all know what happened on that fateful day and the events are not glossed over. There's a definite sense of foreboding before the race (particualrly with the Ratzenberger death hanging over the event) and it seems as though Senna almost knew he was on a collision course with his own fate.

That said it's ultimately an uplifting and life affirming movie that should leave you with a sense of wanting to get out and create your own mark on the world.

Recommended to F1 fans and non fans alike.

anuvahood

read reviews and it got a dismal 10% on rotten tomatoes so i didnt have much hope for this film, turns out it was ok for the first 45 minutes or so atleast, some funny moments if you have friends that act like the people in the film especially would give it a 5/10

Hobo with a shotgun

B movie parody, like a cross between an early Peter Jackson and a Tarantino. Router hauer plays the part of a hobo who dreams of owning a lawnmower but becomes pissed at the scum that inhabits the town. He settles for a shotgun rather than his dream. Bit silly but good fun, particularly the bad guys. 7/10

Senna (2010)

Absolutely fantastic documentary. Watched the 2hr40 version and didn't want it to end. The sound is incredible. The interviews are all spot on, quite balanced and Alain Prost comes out as a genuinely nice guy who in a special cherished the memory of knowing and driving together with Senna. I though the documentary explained very well Senna's decisions on why and which teams to pick to progress in his career, some stuff that was completely new to me.

The way Senna's first Brazil GP is depicted is unreal. Turn up the volume and enjoy the atmosphere, absolutely brilliant. Probably my favourite part of the film.

The last hour or deals with the Imola events. I have to admit from the very first moment the film showed the header May 1st, Imola, or something like that, with a helicopter footage of the race track, I had a lump in my throat. Everybody knows what happened and what you are about to see, but the anticipation of the events which will unfold just breaks you. The documentary does a perfect job here, the interview bits are special, and watching Senna and understanding why he behaves the way he does, it's just unreal. Only thing I didn't like was the editing, but only on a few parts.

Very much recommended. 10/10.

The Fighter - Christian Bale was excellent, the other actors were really good. Not much fighting and it gets slightly predictable at the end but it's a solid film and worth watching - 7.5/10

Cleopatra:

I was disappointed to discover that this film was about an Egyptian Pharoah and not the wonderful girl group from the 90's who were "comin' at ya"

It was longer than any film has a right to be and I'm still trying to decide if I enjoyed it. I spent as much time looking at the sets and costumes as I did watching the film. A lot of the acting was quite over cooked and the film seemed to be more about Caesar and Anthony than Cleopatra.

The film is probably worth a watch just for the scene where Cleopatra enters Rome, the sort of lavish scene that would be fully cgi these days and barely half as impressive as a result. Overall I would say I'm impressed with the scale and production, but underwhelmed by the actual film.

Goodbye, Lenin! - Very good. Nice blend of comedy and drama.

Ponyo - Better than I thought it would be, more childish and not as good many other Ghibli films (doesn't mean much though), but still. Irresistibly charming fantasy.

Zodiac (2007). Great film, fascinating. Frustrating that the main suspect died just before he might have been charged.

Bridesmaids Much better than similar recent fare, think Death At A Funeral (UK version) only with mostly female characters and set at a wedding and the route to get there crossed with a generic US Superbad type comedy. Very funny in parts and not a bad cast, only let down by the low key and standard rom com ending. 7.5/10

It wasn't even typical imo. At least Independence Day and War of the Worlds had a personal aspect to it. And an element of fun.

I take it you will not be watching it again then .

I haven't seen Battle for Los Angles but for me, the worst si-fi I've seen and the only film I walked out of the cinema, disgusted with, was Independence Day. You think this film had a 'personal aspect? Very much comic-book values though. 0/10 for me considering the budget the makers had at their disposal. War of the Worlds was a much better and believable film. Ending was a bit iffy though.

mmm each to there own , I think Independence Day is a good film , it does what it say on the tin , 2 hours of fighting, explosions and a victory against the enemy.
Depends what you want from a film , but 0/10 is very harsh

I love my sifi so I've seen everything from the amazing 'Alien' creature to a B-feature (severely restricted by finance), in which the invaders are no more than a large rug with people underneath it imitating movement. I loved it and admired their gaul for making such a film. I don't want anything else but what's 'on the tin'; but for me, this film got it wrong on so many levels but the biggest sin was assuming it audience was stupid. I was being generous when I gave it 0/10.

Insidious

Watched this expecting good things , the opening titles were good very atmospheric, gave a sense of impending horror and to be honest it was going OK , a bit slow but building up to a good film.
Them in come Dumber and Dumber, never has a film crashed so far so fast and to make it worse you get the crazy old women , just what was all that with the gas mask all about.
About half way though I got bored , but stuck with it.
The ending was just rubbish when is somebody going to make a horror film that is really scary.

3/10

Double Indemnity:

I liked it, but I think the whole relationship/scheme between the two main characters developed a bit too quickly and conveniently. Other than that, it was very good and I enjoyed watching the scheme unfold and then gradually unravel.

Although it's a very old film, It doesn't feel out of touch with modern sensibilities. Greed and lust were obviously as common a motive then as they are now.

As a side point, it was interesting to see Neff speaking into a dictaphone, and characters made references to Long Beach and Inglewood which I now assosciate with Gangsta Rap/Hip Hop.

Sums up the movie perfectly. Turns into a heap of shit

Many horrors these days have good ideas and start well but go ridiculous as the the story progresses

Yeah, I thought the same about Insidious, yet I've seen it described as 'the best horror film of the last ten years'(!) Good grief.

A Serbian Film: So glad I didn't contribute financialy in anyway to the purchasing of this film. What actually starts out as a pretty well shot and slightly sureal look at the world of pornographic movies and exploitation quickly descends into an unwatchable movie in the second half with a really rotten heart at its core.

3/10

Saw this today and thought it was fantastic. Great comedy to watch in the cinema

Can't bring myself to watch it, but from the plot summary I've read, I find it really hard to believe it's in any way "artistic"

Hi, mate. :)

Reading the Wiki blurb about Gun Crazy, it seems the film was a forerunner of the 'New Hollywood' style; not a bad reputation to have, to say the least. :)

Cyrus Mumblecore goes mainstream and nobody benefits from the development. After a vaguely encouraging start, once you don't hear the Human League any more the film takes a turn for the worse. In fact so dull and pointless do the proceedings become that I stopped watching at the half way mark. If I can endure the rest I'll adjust my rating but don't hold your breath. Oh yes, I need to know, what purpose do Jonah Hill and Bill C. Riley serve? They can't act and they aren't funny. So? Hill also seems like a massively self important cnut. 1/10

Rio Sex Comedy It isn't sexy and its isn't funny. It is also nearly as insulting to the intellect as Crash. Poverty is bad, Mmmmkay? 0.5/10

Ghosted A well cast, well acted "gritty" British prison drama. It isn't A Prophet but is is reasonably interesting, despite the numerous prison cliques, until the incredible silliness of the "twist" becomes apparent. So silly is it that when you begin to suspect it you dismiss it because surely no film maker would be that stupid? But they are. 7/10 until the twist, 0/10 after the twist, overall 3.5/10

Transformers 3 Much much better than part 2, the new female lead is hot but even more pointless than Megan Fox and it is far far too long at 2.5 hours. Still, it is fun and lots of things get blown up in far more coherent ways that in part 2. After a half hour kip in the middle I woke to really enjoy the last lengthy battle. Also don't bother with the 3D version. It isn't. take 1/10 off what you gave the original and add 2/10 to your rating for part 2.

I loved Independence Day at the time, but I watched it again a year or so ago and have to admit I found it very cringe-worthy. I'm not sure whether it's just that it hasn't aged well, or whether now that I'm not a young teenager I'm expecting a bit more.

War of the Worlds was much better. With the ending - if you're talking about the germs then they couldn't really change that since it was in the original. If you're talking about the boy being all safe and sound, that was the one thing I was massively disappointed with. Loved the movie, but from the moment he went over that hill I was hoping they wouldn't do the 'Hollywood' ending and have him safe and sound, but unfortunately they did.

I watched some French film the other night, can't remember the name of it but Audrey Tautou was in it so I'm going to give a 10/10.

I've had her as my desktop wallpaper for the past six months. She's fantastic to look at.
