Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Last few movies I've seen on DVD;

Pineapple Express - was quite decent but was expecting far better from reading reviews and other people's thoughts on it. James Franco was funny in it, the fat dealer with the 'tache was shite, not funny at all.

Harold & Kumar (Guantanamo) - a choice between that and summat else resulted in me grabbing this DVD as my missus was hurrying me; turned out to be a very funny film, daft stupid humour but very good to sit and watch together and got better as it went on despite a shit start. The bit with the inbred cracked me.

Rise of a Foot Soldier - true story of Carlton Leach and the Rittenden Murders; Leach, an ex-West Ham terrace leader turned gangster, typical Cockney wanker who inevitably batters a load of United fans in Manchester blah blah blah but the film then very quickly centres off him and reverts to the Rittenden Murders in 1995 when his three mates/colleagues were murdered and he's a minor player in his own biopic almost for the last half of the film. Would give this one a 7/10.

Bachelor Party 2 - bag of shite, would rather watch the original ten times in a row than this wank, why do a sequel twenty fours year later? No Tom Hanks or even any of the same characters or anything obviously.

Did you see the original it was far better.

Taken

Brilliant action/thriller movie in which an ex government agents (Liam Neeson) daughter is taken by an Albanian people trafficking gang whilst on holiday in Paris. Neeson goes on a one man crusade to get his daughter back from the hands of this gang and is surprisingly believable in this role. I was very impressed with some of the action scenes and the film flies bye which is usually a good thing!

Neeson seemed well suited to the role and should definately do more of this style. Also Maggie Grace who played Liam Neesons daughter managed to look younger in this film than she did in Lost about 4 years ago!

8.5/10

I'm going to see that tonight.

It's only been released today in the states.

on DVD?

I never knew you were from the US. It only came out on DVD last week over here I think.

I'll be interested to see what you make of it tho tbh, I rate your opinion of films so lookin forward to seeing this rated.

Do you watch lost? Hopefully you'll know what I mean when i say Maggie Grace looks a hell of a lot younger in this film than lost!

Taken

A little bit predictable but enjoyable. And imagine something like that really exists :nervous: (well apart from "the rescue misson" of course :D )

Black Ops aka Blackwater

WTF ? Plus I think I overslept the 2/3 of this shite.

Underworld : Rise of The Lycans

Missed not having Kate Beckinsale in it, bar that, it was a good film. To be honest anything with vampires in is good.

That being said, I think this film shouldn't have been made and instead they should make a third(fourth) film of the original series. Prequels are never as good(see Star Wars)

Outlander

Surprisingly good. Man from highly advanced planet lands on Earth circa 700 AD. Unfortunately for him, instead of landing in somewhere cool like China he landed in Norseland. Gutted. Worse still he bought back an evil alien dragon type thing that wiped out his entire village on his own planet, and killed his wife and kid. Evil dragon thing starts hunting Vikings, wiping out one village and causing a war between viking clans due to a misunderstanding over who massacred said village.

Anyway mysterious spaceman, who happens to catch the eye of that fit bird from Dr Who that David Tennant ended up shagging, leads Vikings to kill evil alien dragon thing. Well, when they finally get round to untying him anyway. Cast was very good, storyline actually made some attempt at being as plausible as a film about alien dragons that glow in the dark, mysterious technologically advanced human race and vikings with big pointy axes could possibly be.

Definitely worth a watch if you have a few hours to kill and want a good sci fi/fantasy type film. You may not love it, but you won't be disappointed. And considering it went straight to DVD its actually surprisingly well produced and the effects aren't half bad.

7/10. But then I'm a big fan of simple, entertaining films that you can just let wash over you.

How kid safe is it?

Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Some of the dialogue is funny, but overall it's certainly not Kevin Smith's best. He keeps trying to do other things, but let's be honest, he's beset at Jay and Silent Bob.

How kid safe is it?

I would say it's quite kid safe. There is no swearing, very little blood, and no sexual scenes or references whatsoever. There are some bits that may make them jump if they're only young, but it will only make them jump, not instil abject horror that may possibly scar them for life. Honest. The dragon/monster thing itself is made a lot less menacing by the fact that it has red lights all over it which it can turn off and on at will, making it look more like an extra from Thundercats as opposed to Aliens.

There's a fair bit of killing and gore though. That bit where the monster's eating the guy's stomach whilst he's still alive for example (albeit shot from a distance). It rather depends how old your kids are I should think.

Yeah fair point, but you don't really see much of the blokes stomach. I mean its clear the monster is eating him, but you don't actually see any flesh or intestines really. But as Sam says, it does perhaps depend on how old your kids are.

My son is 10 and doesn't scare easily so it sounds fine.

If he doesn't scare easily then it probably will be fine, there really are no bits that will make him cringe or give him nightmares or anything. It's not designed to be a horror film, just a good, easy to watch sci-fi, with futuristic spacemen, big aliens and vikings- naturally.

Hitman

It'd be unfair of me to give it a proper review as for the first time in years I had to turn it off becuase it was so bad. Watched about 20 minutes of it and felt no kind of affiliation to the characters and what i'd saw was just utter shite.

This is more a warning i'd say to give hitman a missman!!

That movie was shit coated shit with shit filling.

Thank you for smoking

Decent, funny at some parts. Nothing more.

Seven Pounds

Do not take the missus or any friends who are girls. They will cry and then hit you and ask you why you aren't crying. The movie does pull at the ol' heart strings i'll give it that.

What are some of your favorite movies, jgraham? I remember you asking me, but I never asked yours.

I have a bit of a wide range really but i'd class these 3 as some of my best

Godfather 2
Full Metal Jacket
Anchorman

I'd put Scarface in over anchorman, but then it'd be too much of a serious list whereas I do like a comedy from time to time.

The Spirit

What a load of shit. Even Eva Mendez and Scarlett being in it didn't stop it from being shit. Do not watch it.
