Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Films I really liked in the last year

Painted Vail - with Ed Norton 8/10
A mighty Heart 9/10
Last King of Scotland - 9/10
The Illusionist 8/10 Interesting movie that surprised me
Memoirs of a Geisha - 9/10

The Fall by Tarmsen Singh. Beautiful back drops. . . the Taj Mahal, Rajastan, Himalayas, Fatehpur Sikri, Pyramids, Bali, Prague, the Great Wall of China et al. Stunning. See, it was a fantastic looking film, but I think most films can look great with huge desert, sea and mountain scapes, with Mughal, Egyptian and Chinese architecture thrown in for good measure. But I expected it to look great. I was more worried that it'd be style over substance. Surprisingly it was quite deep and allegorical. The story was well told - reality mixing with fantasyland as the plot unfolded. Was an accessible film, unlike other films that are dubbed surreal, so I'd recommend it to most people.

Film buff Sir Alex could substitute for Ross

With Jonathan Ross indisposed, Sir Alex Ferguson has emerged as a surprise contender to front Film 2008. “I go to the movies a lot with my wife, Cathy,” he says.

“We always get to the cinema early so I can get my pick’n’mix, my ice-cream and my hotdog.” But players who have wilted under Fergie’s “hairdryer” know that he is a hard man to please. “ Sweeney Todd.

I’ve got one word for that movie – murder,” Sir Alex informs the publishing site, Haymarket Network.

It gets worse. “Another horrible movie was Wanted, with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie. It was absolutely diabolical, very disappointing.”

Sir Alex is often left with his famous stopwatch asking why the ref blew up so soon. “The last good film I saw was No Country for Old Men, which was decent right up until the ending, which really let it down,” he said.

The first guest on Film with Fergie would be Daniel Day-Lewis, “who really is an great actor”. Like football managers, they don’t make ’em like they used to. “ The Searchers, now that’s an excellent film – a classic western.”

Do you reckon he secretly posts on this thread?

Films seen recently:

the new Indiana Jones - they shouldn`t have bothered really
March of the Emporer - superb, really loved it
Mongol - disappointed with it

Since you guys primarily watch film noir and other weird stuff, I momentarily jump the bandwagon, as I have to recommend this movie to you:

"The Man From Earth" starring David Lee Smith.

The poster is way too flashy for the film, a really bad choice in my opinion. It is a really great story. It is so well told, that you don't realize that you haven't moved a muscle for an hour and a half, until the credits roll.
I really don't want to spoil anything, but I can say that "The Man From Earth" is the square root of "Encino Man"+"Highlander" :D

8.5/10

I would like to re-suggest this movie as it is top notch! Even though there is some horrid acting, cinematography etc etc.. But the greatest story EVER!

I would like to re-re-suggest this movie. Watched it last night, and thought it was amazing. And yes, its low budget with questionable acting but you forget all about that when the story kicks in.

Changeling is a very good movie...Eastwood on top of his game...Jolie didn`t annoy me so she must have done a good job...the Oscar buzz is worthy IMO...

Into the wild

Why don't you feck off to Venezuela or China or North Korea Mr. Penn?

Without director, screenplay (and actors it would be) a decent documentary movie about Alaska.

Childish.

Samantha Morton is very good in Control. I thought it was an ok movie, was expecting a bit more.

Hannibal was on the telly at the weekend. Not a great film but an enjoyable baroque thriller. It's no Silence of the lambs and nowhere near as good as Manhunter though.

Finally got round to watching 'Saw' - was not what i was expecting at all, thought it was going to be a goreyhorrorfest like Hostel or something but it was far better than that

I enjoyed it - are the sequels worth watching?

The Second is good, and I think the third was OK too (I think?).

Fourth got a bit tiresome, and the Fifth is just out.

One and Two are good, the others are shit, and I assume 5 is as well

Saw 2 is absolutely jaw-droppingly shite!

Really? I thought the way it ended was pretty good!

Just like Fast & the Furious: Tokyo drift... It was shite too.. Only to be made a little worthwhile because of the very last scene... Not saying saw II was that bad though!

I just worked my way through a few pages. Couldn’t find any reviews of "In Bruges" which is the last good film I watched.

8/10. Well written, great dialog (very funny banter), well acted and well cast. Some priceless scenes and all in you have a very enjoyable film. I recommend.

Is Quantum of Solace as shit as I expect it to be.

To be honest Bourne has probably ruined bond movies for me. Everyone raved about Casino Royale but it was not a patch on any of the Bournes. Also Eva Green is extremely annoying. That accent is fecking irritating. The only thing worse than a toff English accent is a put on emphasised one.

Don't bother with the sequels. They are all terrible and get progressively worse.

That about what I expected but I think I will watch SawII as a couple of people have said it is worthy

I also just saw HellboyII - not as good as the first one but still pretty decent - I would give it 6.5/10

Will be posting a few reviews as I just picked up a whole load of new DVDs for €1 each while in Morocco - perfect picture and sound quality as well - I just dont know how the manage to make a profit at that price.

The same people who like Requiem for a Dream maybe?

Ive never seen any of the Saw films to be honest. I always imagine they are pretty much the same as the Hostel films. I saw Hostel one and thought it was OK but dont see any need to see it rehashed again and again under different names.

Enjoyed Saw 1 thought it was a good little horror. 2nd was just a boring rehash.

Neither are as good as Cube though which was clearly ripped for the Saw films.

Thought Hostel was mindless shite. Liked Cabin Fever though.

You've probably seen them. This is what I've saw last week.

The Lost Weekend
All About Eve
It Happened One Night
Stalag 17
Touch of Evil

Also saw that Zack and Miri movie in the theater over the weekend. Funny stuff.

The Fall's a decent watch, Mehroissa.
