Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Fort Apache the Bronx

Very good. It is like Police Academy 2 but on a serious note. Paul Newman excellent as always (what a surprise).

Finally got round to seeing No Country For Old Men

Good film with some top performances (esp. Javier Bardem) - not sure about the ending though, still deciding if it was really clever or just a big let down ...

8.5/10

Something just doesn't feel right about your verdict in relation to your rating.

Control:

Feckin' brilliant. Real insights into the character of Ian Curtis, and the bleakness of the situ was well communicated. Shits all over the documentry "Joy Divison". Sam Morton and the bloke playing Ian Curtis are both superb.

8/10

Well the film is over 2 hours long - i enjoyed it all but just not sure about the last 10 mins - if I liked the ending then I would have given 9, hence a lower score

That's a shame as I was looking forward to seeing it at some point. Have to agree with "Control", very good film. And its Sam Riley who plays Curtis...uncanny resemblance. Its his first film, if I remember rightly.

I'm going through a phase of devouring South Korean films. Some absolute treats coming out of that country in recent years. Among the best I would mention are Old Boy, which is sheer class, (the whole Vengeance Trilogy is great but Old Boy is the best), Shiri and A Bittersweet Life.

South Korean directors seem to have such a refreshing attitude to making films when you are used to some of the formulaic shite being pumped out of Hollywood. The plots are unpredictable, but most of all the cinematography is usually stunning.

I watched Shiri again the other night. It was good, but not as good as I remembered it. I dont know whether it was just because I had seen it before but the plot development seemed fairly obvious the second time around.

H. That is a good Korean film.

Step Brothers by Will Ferrell

Had a few great laughs.... general stupidity with some serious over the top scenes. John C. Reilly is such an underrated actor, versatile as well.

Role Models - 5.5/10

Pual Ruuds character - "Pick us up in two hours"

Ronnie the little black kid-"feck you miss Daisy"

Tropic Thunder - Disappointing mainstream fart humour, with a few fun scenes.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Making fun of and smelling Hollywood in the same time. Ordinary romantic comedy with some laughs.

Pineapple Express 8/10

Funniest movie I've watched since the 1st Harold & Kumar

You need to watch movies that are actually funny then.

Pineapple Express was as funny as a dose of the clap.

The Andromeda Strain (2008). Probably a TV mini-series but I watched it as a movie. Not a bad update of the excellent original for the first 2.5 hours but the last half hours was very silly indeed. 4/10

Pineapple Express - Pretty nice. Have been a fan of those two, Seth Rogen and James Franco, since their days in 'Freak and Geeks' (which was such a good show). Danny McBride stole the show with his quirkiness though ...It well worth a couple of laughs, but not the savior of the comedy genre as many are making it out to be.

Quantum of Solace - I liked Casino Royale and was looking forward to this one, and it promised much in the first half. But the second half of the movie was such shite, so small-scale, the villain was by far the worst Bond-villain of all time. Craig was all right though .... gritty, bad-ass, covered in dirt and sweat, pretty much through every scene. Oh and Olga K-something-unko has to be the hottest piece of ass in the business right now. Drooooool.

The Future is Unwritten - documentary on the late Joe Strummer. Well put together by Julien Temple, with great archive footage. Had me re-living past glories with a kick in the guts at the end as his sudden death is described by his oldest friend.

Makes Pete Doherty look like a silly little boy trying to a rebel.

Rating?

I just watched the Godfather Part 1 and it was brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Brando was superb and Apollonia was

10/10

I'm going to watch Part 2 in a bit, I'm going for a marathon film session. By the way, I would be absolutely disgraced and outraged if anyone had a rapidshare link to Rebel Without A Cause - starring James Dean ;)

Some like Part II better personally I am one who favors part I, but II is just about as good. Dont for the life of you think of watching Part III

Burn After Reading (2008)

8.5 / 10

Could be better, but still a funny Coen piece. John Malkovich again plays the unappreciated genius who hates everyone. Clooney steals the show though. Star cast.

The Love Guru - 4/10 generally shit, and Jessica Alba didnt get naked sadly

Think I'm going to watch One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest - never seen it before.

I'm loving the old films at the moment, particularly the James Dean films. The cool bastard

Great film but if you haven't read the book you should do so because it is even better.

Zack and Mirni make a porno: Meh, averagely funny film, some laugh at loud moments, some "what the feck was that" moments.

6/10.

Quantum of Solace: Not a a real Bond movie I thought, more of a weaker version of the Bourne movies. No real plot, no real villains, where the feck were the gadgets too? There were some good action sequences though which pushes my rating a bit higher.

6/10.

Taken.

Difficult to sum this one up in some ways. Luc Besson wrote it, it obviously has a massive French influence.... and yet you cant get away from the feeling that the underlying message is Americans are taking their lives into their own hands by coming to Europe. The context-setting portion of the film is weak, but the action part is highly entertaining - and very brutal, capturing the reaction a parent would have if their child was kidnapped.

Very watchable. 7/10.

Also, Sex and the City the movie.

I am a traitor to my gender, I know. I happen to think the series is better than most blokes give it credit for, it is actually very witty. Useful in the study of women and their sometimes-peculiar ways.

Anyway, back to the film: does what it says on the tin. 6/10.

I dont know why I admitted to that.

I am Legend

Watched it last night. It was difficult to take it seriously with the crappy CGI mutant people. Could have been an 8 or 9 rating if they had made the effort to use real people and made it believable.

But they didn't, so it gets a 7
