Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Le Samourai - 8/10

Slowly paced, but gripping at the same time...like most of Melville's films. Made me want a trenchcoat.

Joe (1970) - 7/10

Pete Boyle's first major role and Susan Sarandon's nude scene within 10 seconds of appearing on screen in her debut feature (pixelated out by the kind folks at Starhub for all us sensitive Singaporeans). Not come across this one before but from the precis it appeared to be the best of a lousy pick when I was looking for something to watch last night and couldn't be arsed to get up and pick a DVD.

A surprising film in many ways, not least because I'd never heard of it despite the strong echoes of Easy Rider and Taxi Driver it immediately set off for me. A bit dated but an excellent performance from Boyle as the blue collar right wing xealot turned avenger which given his role as Travis Bickle's guru the Wizard 6 years later in Taxi Driver I'm surprised was not held up as one of the influences for Scorcese's classic.

Anyone else seen this one?

Vicky Christina Barcelona - 7/10

Much better than Match Point and the pile of crap that Scoop was. One thing that I did not like was the commentary, was completely unnecessary I thought. Penelope Cruz was the best part. She really is quite a decent actress, was excellent in Elegy as well. Much better than Scarlett Johanssen.

Pan's Labyrinth. Very good, handles the mix of fairytale horror and that of fascist Spain brilliantly.

90%

I was underwhlemed when I saw Pan's Labrinyth I thought it would be much better

No, I was going in thinking it was gonna be better, but I had quite high expectations, not saying it was bad in any way, just a let down

Ripley's Game 4/5

John Malkovich. That's all I need to say. I guess he is the only one who could alternatively be given the role of Hannibal Lecter.

Wild Hogs 3/5

Ok, a few funny moments, a few embarrassing moments, embarrassing John Travolta.

It's on my 'to see' list. The Devil's Backbone is another good one.
I can actually admit that El Orfanato was one of the few films I've seen recently that both made me shiver of fear and cry like a baby in the same time. Even though it had one or two mainstream elements.

Guillermo Del Toro is an 'executive producer' of the film just because he loved it so much. He thought sticking his name to it would make it more famous, and it certainly made me watch it.

A few pages ago someone said that Casino used the word feck more than any other movie, that is incorrect the movie feck uses the word far more

This is Part I of II. Excellent movie - 8/10. Especially good if you know the history already.

John Woo's action scenes could do with some better choreographing. Poor effort from Corey Yuen. But the acting, and the nuances of historical drama, are top notch. Can't wait for Part II.

They're going to release an edited version combining Part I and II in Western markets. I reckon it's going to be shit. Don't bother - buy both parts on DVD from Hong Kong or something.

Seems to be millions of movies about the three kingdoms and whatnot right now. Forbidden Kingdom, Warlords, this one..

The Warlords is about the Taiping Rebellion, Forbidden Kingdom is an adaptation of Journey to the West. I suppose you could say that's overkill, but China has a rich and varied history. There's about 1,500 years between Red Cliff and the Warlords. They're both about different things anyway. Red Cliff is a historical drama. The Warlords is more John Woo than John Woo - more like A Better Tomorrow, brotherhood of men, faithful until death, type stuff.

Anyway, Red Cliff is the definitive version of part of the Three Kingdoms story (208 AD to about 210 AD, at least). Or it will be, once Part II is released.

Ok, let me rephrase that. There are millions of chinese war movies coming out at the moment! Unfortunately the ones I've seen isn't close to Hero, and to some extent Crouching Tiger and Flying Daggers.

I think Brotherhood of War(korean of course) is slightly overrated. But then again, I find most war movies overrated.

Seen the fantastic LA HAINE (1994) again.
Fantastic piece of cinematography, Kassovitz shows he actually had some passion and talent. It takes place in a suburb of Paris were multiculturalism and anti-society thoughts stand high. Classy black/white which was explained because it had such a small budget. Cool ending and a noticeable character-depth. Very clean in style.

Just fecking see it. 10/10

Boy A - 7/10

Drama about a juvenile criminal who is released from prison and given a new identity. Decent movie.

Fist of Legend. Rule #1: Never piss of Bruce Lee. Rule #2: Never piss off Jet Li. People still do this though, and Li will kick the shit out of them. The fights in this one are top notch, but the directing at times lets it down. Well worth a watch though.

Iron Man and the new Hulk any good, Ole?
Iron Man is ok. Amazing action scenes, but too few of them. I'd wanted the movie to go on for 30 minutes more, making it a three-hour movie, which probably is a good rating.

The new Hulk is astonishingly poor. Cliches from start to end, cheesy is an understatement. A shame that Edward Norton agreed to this crap. Ang Lee's underrated original is far better.

It can't be worse than the original.
