Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I did not think The Hulk was as good as others in this thread. Obviously an improvement over the last one but was just a bit wooden and obvious for me. Standard comic adaptation stuff.

Hot Fuzz - not as good as Shawn of the Dead. Still funnier than most Adam Sandler /The Epic/Disaster/Date movie franchise.

La Chinoise. Everyone knows I love Godard's New Wave efforts, but after that he got into 'revolution' filmmaking. I don't really care for this phase of his career. His movies are disjointed(far more than his new wave movies), and it perhaps requires a certain level of awareness of the times.

In Bruges - Colin Farrell, and indeed everyone, is supurb in this story of Irish hitmen hiding out in Belgium. One of the best i have seen recently 8.5/10

Ken: "We shall strike a balance between culture and fun."

Ray: "Somehow, I believe Ken, that the balance will tip in the favour of culture...like a big, fat, f**king retarded, f**king black girl on a seesaw opposite...a dwarf."

Le Gai Savoir. Don't quite know what to make of this one. It's clearly not meant to be a narrative. Godard attempts to break down the essence of cinema. The word juxtaposition was made for this movie. I'd have to read a little bit more about the meanings to fully grasp it.

Mr. Arkadin - saw the patched up version released by the Criterion Collection. Very enjoyable film.

The Mist - one of the better horror movies i've seen of late. True to the novella by Stephen King. Interesting ending, i liked it.

Hated it. Couldn't even sit through the entire thing.

What did you hate about it ? I agree that it seemed more like a made for TV mini series than a big budget hollywood movie, but most of King's novels adaptations have that feel to it. I loved the Lovecraftian theme. The characters were all well drawn, a little over the top I agree especially the religious zealot - Miss Carmody. I was undecided in the middle of the movie, where i was thinking that it was like Lord of the Flies - grocery store version, but I liked the last half an hour of the movie. It was so much better than the other nonsense torture-porn movies we are subjected to these days.

SPOILER ALERT :
I can see how most people might think that the ending was crap with the military arriving immediately after he shot his son and the other three but I guess that was exactly what Frank Darabont was going for. Even his previous movie Shawshank Redemption was about having faith in the human spirit. In the Mist, the lil band of survivors who make it to the car, had obviously lost all hope in humanity (after the ordeal in the super market) and swung so far in the opposite direction that they did not believe in the resilience of man to cope and find a solution. So the message pretty much was - Never give up hope.
The final shot with Thomas Jane weeping like a madman when he realized what he had done and then they show the lady who had begged him for help earlier, being rescued by the military was pretty nice.

Decent gutsy ending in my opinion.

I just watched The Prestige.

Awesome movie, the twists in the end were absolutely brilliant. It's the best movie that ive seen in a while. The only bad thing about it was that Hugh Jackman were in it. I cant stand him!

The ending was the let down. Great visuals and atmosphere, but dear oh dear how obvious and predictable it ended up. Like we would never have guessed the 'twist' ending!

I watched 24 Hour Party People again last night. I love that film. Incapsulates everything I thought and felt about Manchester as a young teenager. How one city can have spawned such a disproportionately high number of great bands - AND be home to the greatest football team in the world - is beyond me.

That's why I'm moving to Manchester next spring. :)

Brilliant film.

And the point being that it's supposed to be predictable and mainstream? Thanks for your informative contribution.

No there was a bit more than that. Check out the imdb forums if you have time, there are some really devoted people there who explain everything with detailed posts. The cracker was the last shot of the tank with the dead guy in it.

The plot "twist" was ludicrously obvious. A pretty silly and pointless film all round IMO.

Actually part of the twist was ludicrously obvious and the other bit was just ludicrous.

I just saw "Gone Baby Gone". Surprisingly powerful stuff.

Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris all brilliant in it. It raises a few interesting moral questions as well.

Thought it was a great Movie.

Ben should stay behind the lense and let his brother Casey do the acting.

.

Could'nt agree more.

I was actually surprised this film didnt get any oscar noms.

I thought it was okay. Then again, when everyone's raving about it, it was always going to be a let down.
