Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Presumably that love and sex are part of the human condition. Movies should be able to dwell on every part of the human condition. And it’s hard to have sex with your clothes on. In no particular order.
My initial intent was fogged over by alcohol. I'll see if I can explain.

I find most simulated sex scenes to be uninteresting. I don't need to see Michael Fassbender's dick to understand that he's a sex addict. I don't necessarily need to see Emma Stone naked to understand she's having sex with Olivia Coleman. I think the odd flash of nudity is great, I'm talking more about these extended faux sex scenes where the filmmakers think they're pushing boundaries by getting an A-list actress to bare it all.

I loved the sex scenes in Body Heat and Betty Blue, really well done. The Lovers too, with Eva Greene. The sex scenes in Wild Things were prurient at best, because although Denise Richards was game, Neve Campbell refused to get naked. So in this case, the story would have been better served had Campbell stripped off. Wild Things was very fun, an erotic thriller that had a couple nude scenes but nothing graphic. I enjoy an expected nude scene, especially when it's running against the narrative, such as Natasha Henstridge in Species, and Mathilda May in Lifeforce, and Brooke Adams in Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. The downside is when that becomes the sole talking point of the film, like Natalie Portman doing a nude scene for Hotel Chevalier. Portman has said she won't do another one.

9 Songs by Michael Winterbottom basically took that as far as it can go. Real sex between actors. It was a very strange experiment.

Terence David past away aged 77 yesterday. I’ve haven’t watched a lot of his work but Distant Voices, Still Lives and Death and Transfiguration are beautiful works about the English working class.

“The Zone of Interest”

Jonathan Glazer’s latest film (in German) based rather loosely on a Martin Amis novel. It depicts the domestic life of a German couple and their children, pets and servants. The couple in question are Rudolf Hoess (camp commander of Auschwitz) and his wife In their house with a lovingly tended garden in the shadow of the crematoria. Needless to say it’s unsettling as conversations about vines and flowers unfold amid a background of barbed wire walls and black smoke spewing from chimneys 24 hours a day. The holocaust itself is not shown directly and, aside from the smoke, ash and occasional gunshots offscreen, the horror is chiefly conveyed by a deeply disturbing soundtrack of distorted industrial noise and unnatural nighttime lighting. In conclusion, it’s portrays a familiar theme from an interesting perspective but, given the amount of powerful films already devoted to this topic, I’m not sure we needed another banality of evil exposition. Also I’m not sure it would be appropriate for me to confirm, in light of recent posts, that no A list actress gets her tits out in this film.

No One Will Save You
A girl is tormented by aliens in her isolated home. Absolutely loved this silent horror film. Very well directed and performed by the lead actress. Don't want to say anymore as it's better going in unsullied. I'm not usually a fan of alien films but a few inconsistencies aside, this was done really well 7.5/10

First half hour was ok. Got tedious after a while, so full of clichés despite being decently crafted.

The Crow

I've had this one of my list for quite some time. Forgot about it for a while, and then saw a Facebook post about Bruce Lee recently and suddenly started reading up on his history, and then the circumstances regarding the death of his son, Brandon, during the production for this film. Didn't really know anything about this film except that it was regarded by many as a cult classic.

Watched this with the wife yesterday, armed with a bottle of prosecco and a fecking amazing tiramisu. I have to say that I LOVED this film. It's possibly the grungiest film I've ever seen. The soundtrack is banging. Stone Temple Pilots, a Nine Inch Nails version of a Joy Division song, The Cure, and so on. It's very bleak in places and depicts a grim, messy, ugly world, in the same way that the original Robocop did. There's a little bit of that in here, a little bit of Blade Runner, a little bit of the Batman films. I loved the noir setting and feel that runs throughout. Visually, it's eyecatching in places with so many great shots, particularly the scene where the main character makes his way back to his apartment in the first third of the film. There's a few brilliant lines dotted throughout that are no doubt quotable or memorable. I've got a thing for revenge films and this left me very satisfied.

Really, really enjoyed this. I've decided that it's going to be my go-to Halloween film from now on.

12 Angry Men

11 men bully a single guy into accepting women are less hot when wearing glasses.

I always enjoy how earnest old movies are.
None of this self aware irony poisoning. Overall a very good film

8/10

Nobody

Better Call Saul Saul goes full John Wick and for some reason the movie has gotten good reviews, even The Guardian gave it 4/5.
If they had kept the action comedy tone consistent through out the whole movie it would have been ok but it's just cringe and plain silly at times.

3/10

It's one of my favourite films, for all the reasons you said. Plus Ernie Hudson.

Lads, I've had the soundtrack on today. It's sublime.

Teenage me would have been all over this shit. Fecking love this film.
A reboot starring pennywise is coming next year... Hoping for a hard R rating. Just realised FKA Twigs is in it too as the female lead. Intriguing.

Not sure if this was reviewed here but just finished watching Blood and Gold on Netflix. Enjoyed it very much.

TMNT Mutant Mayhem

Fun film, puts a bit of a different spin on the origin story. Impressive cast of supporting voice actors. I wasn't overly keen on the voice acting of the Turtles, they sounded a bit nerdy compared to the original 1990 film, or even the cartoons. It's not terrible, it just lacked a bit of attitude. The rest of the cast is great though. The animation and art style is really cool. Perhaps the first comic book film to actually look like a comic book, besides maybe Sin City. The score is awesome too, but it's Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, so it's bound to be. feck an orchestra, synthesizer soundtracks are the best. Recommended, 7/10

My ex-gf works for an organization called RAINN (https://www.rainn.org) which does a lot to protect women and children from rape, assault, incest, and trafficking. They have been doing the hard work for years, but Sound Of Freedom presents it as some kind of action adventure. If people really cared about stopping child trafficking, there are plenty of things that could be done in Congress, but the Republicans have no interest in these policies. They are the same shameless worms who think it's acceptable to separate children from their parents at the border. Even though that particular policy was ended, something like 1,000 kids have not been reunited with their parents because the Trump people willfully made the paperwork shoddy, or lost it out right. It's cognitive dissonance at its finest.
Love some good schadenfreude...

Ha! Ketamine treatments, booze, pills and "...he would begin insisting that he and his couples ruse partner had to build physical “chemistry” to fool traffickers, and would begin inviting them to shower together, participate in couples massages, “tantric yoga” and lap dances on Ballard’s lap."

Legit!

Finally watched Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One….

The film had great pacing, as expected, and was jam packed full of great action and set pieces, but it didn’t quite hit the high notes of previous instalments, for my tastes. His deep connection to Grace came too quickly and was too forced, and they treated her character and Ilsa’s as far too interchangeable pieces, rather than individuals. Women serving an objectified purpose, rather than unique individuals. That bothered me, quite a lot.

I thought this entry also suffered from the lack of a good supporting cast. There are usually a fair few people in the team or attached to the team, for them to play off each other, but the old IMF is looking very threadbare these days, and dwindles further - for varying reasons - as the movie goes on.

Solomon Lane and August Walker were also much better, and more charismatic villains than Gabriel and the blue, squiggly blob thingy. The latter, particularly, made for a poor conversationalist. It also would’ve been better to have an actor like Javier Bardem as Gabriel, than Esai Morales, who I thought was really flat in this film. His karate kicking, sword wielding, lunatic she-assassin sidekick was okay, but felt more like a henchman from a fast and furious or Expendables movie, than a mission impossible film.

Previous films have relied on a mixture of cunning, deception, elaborate planning and good old fashioned action to accomplish the teams goals. This one was mainly just relentless action supported by more pickpocketing in the two and a half hour run time, than an entire year of rush hours on the London Underground. Much less clever trickery and cunning than usual; which i think made the film worse than i had expected.

Still good enough that I’ll watch the sequel, and probably pay to see it at the cinema or do a streaming rental; but it won’t stop me from generally hating Grace as a character.

I watched a whole bunch of middling movies lately.

West Beirut is a Lebanese film from 1998 that depicts an adventurous teenager's life at the start of the Lebanese civil war in 1975. The historical setting is interesting (to me), but the story, dialogues, and acting are quite poor I thought. 2/5

The Current War is "a 2017 American historical drama film inspired by the 19th-century competition between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse over which electric power delivery system would be used in the United States" (lazy Wikipedia quote). Nikola Tesla features quite a bit as well. It's an interesting story and interesting people involved, and the camerawork in the first 30 min and occasionally after is quite nice; but the film is very hurried and doesn't do justice to any of it. It should have been a miniseries really. 2/5

Narvik is a 2022 Norwegian historical war film depicting the battle for Narvik at the start of WWII between the Germans on the one side and the UK, French, Norwegians, and Polish (they're mentioned in the film but never shown) on the other. It keeps going nicely but is set up as largely separate episodes at key moment, which breaks the narrative and character progression - in what's otherwise primarily a character-driven film. As a result, it feels quite unsatisfactory. 2/5

Love at First Sight is a 2023 US romantic comedy about two university students getting together through a series of improbable chance encounters. The film thinks it's quite clever and funny, but isn't much of the former and not enough of the latter. 2/5

Hancock is a 2008 US superhero film about an uncouth, always drunk superhero who causes more havoc than he saves people from, until an advertising guy tries to change his life. In the second half of the film, they get bored of this plot, so they quickly resolve it for a short bit about another hidden superhero, and then of course a quick final fight with a villain (and all of that in 92 min) Not great by any means (and now I know why I couldn't remember anything from my first watch years ago), but at least it was entertaining along the way. 2/5

'Make better life (film) choices!' I know right! But on the bright side, at least Central Intelligence didn't disappoint in the simple pleasures category. It is a 2016 US buddy action comedy about a big softie but hardcore CIA agent who recruits a now-cowardly highschool hero for some dangerous work. Stupid fun that worked for me. Best use of Blur's Song 2 in film I've seen so far, too. 3/5

I don't know what to make exactly of Faraway. It's a 2023 German romantic comedy drama film about a woman from Munich with uncaring people at home, who finds out after her Croatian mum's funeral that the latter had a house on a Croatian island. So she decides to just go there - right away. Of course the house is a mess and there are complications with a guy, and so on. It's kinda sweet and nice but also pretty lame. 2/5 as well I guess.

The Last Shift was better I thought. It's a 2020 US drama about a guy who's about to retire from his lifelong job doing the night shift at a fast-food place that does only drive-through at night, and then has to introduce to the job a recent highschool graduate who was once promising but got lost in himself, did a short time in jail, and now needs the job as part of his parole requirements. We thought this would be a comedy-drama, and in that sense it was wildly disappointing, cause it's really rather quite a depressing drama without much fun at all. But as a drama, I thought it worked quite well. It's understated and takes its time for everything to play out. Pretty alright I thought. 3/5

The Big Short (2015). Directed by Adam McKay.
I don't know why I never saw this until now. An all-star cast with a shameful moment in history exposed to daylight. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Rafe Spall, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling. I know some people didn't like McKay's take on Donald Rumsfeld, but I personally enjoyed that film. This one takes a fairly jaron-heavy micro world of finance, banking, and Wall Street shenanigans, and makes it entertaining. There is a lot of breaking the 4th wall, but those moments are expertly done, usually with celebrities cameos explaining a difficult concept (like a CDO) in scenes like Margot Robbie in a bubblebath or Selena Gomez at a casino. This film names the names of the people who caused the 2007 crash. It makes a strong case that this was unprecedented fraud and that the perpetrators should be in prison. The film concludes by mentioning that the public bailed out these bankers who gambled on the public's dime, and the bankers used that money to pay themselves bonuses while 8 million people lost their jobs and 6 million people lost their homes. I guess going in I thought it was going to be like Spotlight, and heavy, but it's very zippy and fast, while also being heavy.

Recommended for entertainment and also a history lesson.
10/10*

*pretty much stuck the landing, high degree of difficulty, told a complex tale in a fun way, and did it all with an irreverent style. Might even watch it again.

It's funny how Adam McKay did a decade of pretty straightforward and pretty successful comedies (like Anchorman) - and then decided to go serious (with a funny twist, but still) and had three really good films in a row (The Big Short, Vice, Don't Look Up), again pretty successful. That's like Jim Carrey in a director.

Not a real review but something i wanted to share.

I dont know how but i could convince my girlfriend to watch all the fast and furious movies. She never watched a single one, I missed only one or two but never watched them closely together.

So some days ago we were watching the first movie and in the first scene they are chasing a truck when one driver decides to drive under the truck to get to the other side.
My gf looks at me and goes "Yeah sure, as if someone would do this."
I burst out laughing and tell her that she REALLY has no idea what she has signed up for haha.

Today we watched the 7th movie with cars jumping between skyscrapers, other action scenes that could also come out of Terminator and of course our muscle packed heroes that always make ridiculously manly comments. My gf is alternating between laughing and sighing in disbelief.
Im already excited for the space scene in the 9th movie.

10/10 experience, can recommend haha

If she watches them all, you have to marry her. Don't let that one get away!

It's amazing, because those earlier movies were all script and actor improv, nothing was particularly visually interesting or directed with any sort of style. The Big Short is the best of the 3. Did you like it? I was surprised how much I liked it. It's weird giving it a perfect score, but it really did everything it set out to do, and exceeded my expectations.

Yeah, they are all three quite good. I've actually been trying to convince my wife the past few weeks to give it a chance (and me the opportunity for a second watch ;) ), but no luck so far: she doesn't like films that's primarily guys talking, and the idea of hot women explaining finance doesn't lure her in either. It's interesting actually, her perspective on films really helps me see how male-centric (in cast, action, and target audience) films far too often are. But in this case, I'll keep trying and I'll find out again how good The Big Short really is.

In the meantime, I do remember it as very good, although I think I wasn't all that impressed by having to follow these events through the actions of people who are themselves trying to make money out of it all. But also without that, I think I might like Vice better. In turn Don't Look Up started very strong but I think it petered out a bit and became more of a downright farce eventually. (Still good, just not that good.)

Veiled attempt to tell the caf you have a girlfriend.

I liked at the end of The Big Short how Gosling gets a check for $45 million. He says, “I know you’re judging me, don’t judge. It’s a lot of money, what am I gonna do?” I think that movie would not have worked without those wacky 4th wall things. I liked Bale in Vice but I like TBS better:

She's gonna break up with you when the end credits start rolling in the last one.

Exorcist 3 (1990)
This was excellent. Its a creepy, relatively fresh take on the possession genre with some great dialogue and performances. Slow moving, doesn't really show any gore or violence, using fast cuts and character reactions in its place, which just makes it more disturbing really. Some ropy effects that might take some people out of it but well worth a watch.
I hate that carp.
8/10 maybe more?

Had a whinge about this in its own thread but might as well post a review here.

Creator - 3/10
Gareth Edwards has a crack at a movie with some original IP and it’s not good. The premise doesn’t really make sense as it’s supposed to a future where humans are at war with AI’s but AI’s just seems to mean robots. And they’re pretty shit robots, who don’t seem to be any stronger or faster than humans and are about as accurate at shooting guns as a stormtrooper with Parkinson’s. The narrative is riddled with gaping plot holes. Every 5-10 minutes there’s another wtf moment, so stupid it takes you right out of the moment. Literally eye rolling stuff. I kept telling myself to switch off and go with the flow but there was just far too much stupid for anyone to ignore. The screening I was at had audible groans over some of the dumber moments. The script was terrible and there was no chemistry between the two leads, despite them both being good actors (the kid, especially, is obviously very talented and/or well directed) On the plus side, the locations were gorgeous, it was nicely shot and the digital FX were more immersive than your standard Marvel shitefest. Plus there is excellent use Radiohead in the score. Which I’m a sucker for. Still not worth two hours of your life. Avoid.
