Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Saw X
Watched it today and I must say, this is the best one since the first two. I honestly feel that if this was released between 1 and 2, it would have been so much better as the premise of the film focuses on John Kramer trying to get treatment for his cancer but anyone who has seen past the first 2 films will already know the outcome, so it feels a bit pointless. I still had fun with it though 6.5/10
Ffs they're still making these?!
Am I alone in thinking it’s weird she did this?
Why so? I really don't know enough about the film, but if the nudity serves the story, maybe it makes sense?

Nudity in films these days is weird, as we are in an instant porn time. This isn’t a flash this is like almost hardcore explicit (from what I read). So why would Emma want to shed her sweetheart rom/com image by showing people her butthole? Anne Hathaway also did nudity to get out from the Disney hex, but not like this.

I remember the remake of Psycho, the scene where Anne Heche gets killed, she collapses on her knees in the shower, and her bunghole is clearly visible.** I can’t fathom why anyone thought that was necessary then, or why it’s necessary now. Does it make her a more serious actress? Does it make Stone seem more in character because you can see between her legs? Genuine question. I read that this thing has graphic nudity like what you’d see in Penthouse.***
There was that film experiment by Michael Winterbottom where the couple in the film had real sex, real BJs, the whole 9 yards. The idea was to see if this made the film more emotionally intense. It did not. Chloe Sevigny gives Vincent Gallo a real BJ in (forgot title, something about a bunny). It adds nothing. It’s degrading, I think. I mean, I’m all for attractive actresses looking attractive, dresses bikinis, some nudity, whatever, but to get gynecological seems like they’re trying to make a point, and I don’t know what that is.

**its possible the version I saw was not the theatrical version. ***Penthouse was a magazine with naked women in it famous for “showing the pink”.

Anyone seen The Creator yet? Glorious visuals and design but the story is so flat. Bit disappointing because the potential for an amazing film is there.

Agreed, it looks great but the story is pretty generic and lacking which is maybe a common criticism of Gareth Edwards' movies.

I haven't seen Poor Things yet but the reviews are very positive so am looking forward to seeing it. Emma Stone seems to have really enjoyed her experience with Yorgos Lanthimos working on The Favourite (my favourite movie of his), in which she definitely subverts the sweetheart image, given she is the lead in Poor Things and will be the lead in his next movie so I think she sees her career path differently which I like and I'm really looking forward to her upcoming show with Nathan Fielder of whom I'm a big fan.

Almost watched it last night, but read the same reviews. Is it worth watching for the visuals alone?

This is such a weird post

nowt wrong with a bit of bum in the movies

“Poor Things” is a basically an arthouse film with a big budget so it’s not like Emma Stone is signing up for “Showgirls”. Also, the sex scenes are an integral part of the storyline. I was admittedly a bit surprised to see so much of her but it wasn’t gratuitous and she obviously trusts Lanthimos and his singular vision. Give it a watch anyway.

I'm sure I'll see it. Nudity and the love scene are two weird holdovers from an age prior to being able to look at porn on your phone at work. Hollywood has largely given up on the love scene.

In light of some people thinking nudity is weird... If you're not scared of skin being shown and like weird, unsettling movies try giving Infinity Pool on Hulu a watch. Starring Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth. Admittedly haven't completely finished it yet but it's def...interesting. There is one scene near the beginning of the movie especially though of a "close" interaction between Goth and Skarsgard that shows some additional detail I don't recall ever seeing in a movie that wasn't porn.

That only stacks up if all nudity and love scenes were only there because they were trying to fulfil the same purpose as porn.

Americans have such a weird relationship with nudity....
There was a viral tweet about Oppenheimer where a American marriage couple closed their eyes during the sex scenes. Which is a great way to prove Paul Veroheven point that Americans are more comfortable with violence than sex.

Although tbf Oppenheimer sex scenes was actually censored in other countries.
@Sweet Square we've got a live one

I think me and you are the only ones who defend Showgirls on here. It’s such a misunderstood masterpiece. The nudity is essential as it’s showing how unsexy and not erotic the sex industry is.

Although on the other end of the scale is Benedetta. Which is about how the hotter and more erotic the lesbian sex is the closer it’s to message of Jesus Christ.

I’ll never forget the time I was on a beach in America and two French girls who had just arrived on holiday decided to sunbathe topless, prompting a bunch of American blokes to surround them and take photographs. With the general consensus from the American beach goers that the two French girls were the deviants in this scenario.

Jesus thats crazy!

Nah, I think so too. I don't mind sex and violence on screen but make your point and move on, don't need to dwell on it. Same with anything really. John Wick 4 for example, the action is just too long.

With that said, I find Emma Stone really hot so half tempted to watch this now

I hated this film. Great concept, pointless overall and just a wasted opportunity. Mia Goth was great in it though. "JAMES!"
Reviews for the new Exorcist flick suggest it's a steaming pile of hot garbage.
Yeah even the die hard horror community, who are a very forgiving bunch, absolutely hate it. Not surprised considering that director is a fecking hack.

I think she’s hot too, and I enjoy seeing her naked, but I don’t think graphic nudity advances the story or emotional heft of a film. It’s great portraying a steamy love scene with naked actors, and it’s something else when it becomes the selling point of the film.

I once boom op on a sex scene. Imaging that. Have both up in the air, groin area exposed

Luckily filming sex is the most unsexiest of scenarios so it was all good.

Showgirls, like all Verhoeven's movies, is awesome.

Confession time - I’ve never seen Showgirls (although I’ve seen most of Verhoeven’s films), it’s just that Elizabeth Berkeley has become a sort of shorthand for an actress‘s career going off the rails because she was persuaded that it was all done in the best possible taste.
It’s like a lot of movies that sound irresistible : Showgirls, Sirens (Elle MacPherson et al. naked), Under the Skin (Scarlett Johansson naked), Blonde (Ana De Armas). The Dreamers (Eva Green), Nymphomaniac (Charlotte Gainsbourg), Red Sparrow (Jennifer Lawrence), Blue is the Warmest Color (Lea Seydoux) : it’s interesting for about 3 seconds. Then the novelty wears off. I think there's a certain allure when you know that Famous Actress is going to be baring it all, and that does guarantee asses-on-seats, but almost every time it's not as great as you'd hope.

Adèle being naked in Blue is the warmest colour makes it interesting for way more than 3 seconds.

Also do you hate nudity? Some of those are actually great film and the nude scenes are important from a narrative perspective, and aren't particularly exploitative.

Thought she was really hot in Showgirls.

There's four of those now, also The Rat Catcher, Poison, and The Swan (all 17 min). I look forward to watching them!

I wonder if there will be more, I thought it was just three just yesterday...?
I think four was the plan so if they're all there now, that should be it. I was also surprised by how quickly they dropped.
Watched it last night and really enjoyed it. I think being constrained by someone else's story has really helped Anderson keep focus with this one.
Yeah, it's the best thing that he's done in a long time.

These are great. They’re very stagey but still work perfectly on the screen. I particularly liked The Swan. Small but perfectly formed.

Nice. The last decade it’s definitely seems to have got more praise.

Its well worth watching. Although I admit it’s a very hard sell because it’s pretty much a Barbie doll covered in shit and glitter.

From interviews it seems Berkeley was making a deliberate choice with her over the top acting and saw the fun nature of the film. But if she went into it knowing it’s about the sex industry and American capitalism, I’m not so sure but tbh I haven’t looked up that many sources. Also from what I’ve read Veroheven sees directing as a form of democracy. There’s a lot of input from the actors and crew. He isn’t a really auteur director.

It's called nutting.

Ship of Theseus (2012)
Three incredibly thought provoking and impactful stories all dealing with identity.
A blind photographer insecure about her art, a monk fighting against animal testing and a stock broker obsessed with money.

Majority of the movie is in English and available on Youtube, I’ll urge everyone to give it a go.
