Nice stuff about the resurgence of the Mega Drive & others:

Why retro consoles are about more than nostalgia
A new version of the classic1988 games console is selling well this year, apparently, but the appeal of this system goes deeper than reminiscence:

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/nov/20/sega-mega-drive-retro-consoles-more-than-nostalgia
Good read that, this bit really is true

However, part of the appeal is that these machines are resolutely not modern. The 16bit consoles were the last generation that was just about games. After this came the PlayStation, the Saturn, the 3DO – multimedia devices intended as CD and movie players as well as gaming hardware. Then we entered the connected era, with its endless system updates and patches. When you put a cartridge into the SNES or Mega Drive, the game boots up in seconds and you’re in – no waiting, no updates. Bam. You’re playing a video game. And once you’re in, you get the whole experience, a complete product. There were rarely any bugs, there was no downloadable content. Everything the game had was on that chunk of plastic.

Also the article mentions that to play a SNES or Mega Drive you will need a CRT television or monitor but for the SNES I have it works fine on a small LCD TV( Using RCA connector - red yellow white jacks)

There are all sorts of ways of getting the snes looking good on a big tv, a good way with the connecter you have is a scart plug adaptor with a resistor soldered in. If you can be arsed of course.

Actually that trick makes every Nintendo up to the Wii look better on flatscreens.

Pretty harsh to blame the Saturn and PSX for system updates, dlc and patches, when they became a really big thing with PS3 and Xbox 360.

I haven't read the article fully, but from the N64 there were flash updates, but not major ones in the way we know today. If the older consoles needed api updates, they would indeed be on disc and more often than not would be software side.

Finally started playing Rocket League (got it free with my Oct 16th preorder Steam Link/Control)... No idea why I hadn't booted it up sooner, because damn, this game is amazing fun  I remember playing the SARPBC demo back in the day, but I never bought it... No idea why.

Started playing Wolfenstein The New Order yesterday because it's a Bethesda title and they nailed it again. Great level design, gameplay feels a bit like Dishonored with a bit more focus on the action part altough you can choose the stealth approach aswell, which is always a plus. Very good and fun game. One of those that you finish in 3 or 4 binge sessions. Also, shooting Nazis never gets old. More of this please!

Got in in Steam sale this week. Can't believe I missed this before. Superb game.

We've passed the 25th birthdays of both the SNES and Mega Drive in the last couple of weeks without any posts about either of them. What a disaster :(

Splatoon won best shooter at the video game awards. Pretty good for a new ip and a departure from typical Nintendo games.

Yeah. Let's hope it isn't completely dumbed like most series these days.
Ken Levine or someone else?

If it is Levine, then surely it has to be great. Especially considering that now he has a smaller team (so, I guess will be concentrated on gameplay and innovation rather than graphics).

I heard about this story on the Giant Bombcast the other week. Apparently the System Shock rights had been completely forgotten and ended up at some insurance company (or something like that) and the guys who did the System Shock Enhanced edition managed to track them down and buy them.

I think they said there studio would be too small to make it so they would need to bring in external help. Also said they wanted to stay true to the originals

It's unclear at the moment, but it appears as if they are trying to get as many original Looking Glass guys as possible.

To be fair though, Bioshock 1 was great (though dumbed), but the sequels were ok to mediocre so I'm not too bothered if he's there or not. In fact going by some of the decisions and management of the Infinite project, it may be for the best. I'd be more interested in a new IP from him tbh.

BioShock 2 wasn't done by him.

Infinite had poor gameplay, but terrific story and great setting.

Still think that he is one of the best in the business.

That's why I'd prefer a new IP from him. Or even another Bioshock made exactly how he wants would be perfect.

I think SS3 should be old school and the story and setting pretty much is already there. Allowances could be made on some of the more rpg elements (and weapon degrading, these modern gamers clearly can't handle that or weight management going by the FO4 thread ) but the core has to be far more SS than Bioshock.

To be fair, it is a pain (both in SS2 and DX) to decide what weapons you should take with you and what weapons to leave. In SS2, I was leaving most of the weapons and other stuff in the elevator in order to not lose them.

I wanna buy something... Not a game, but some hardware. I've already got the money stashed away for Vive, so I'm not worried about waiting for that, but what about before then? Buy a PS4 and finally play Bloodborne? Upgrade the PC? Buy this monitor?

I just fancy a change.

Anyone played the new Shadowrun games? Just finished returns and almost done with Dragonfall and having a blast. Real gems considering I only paid a tenner for the trilogy.

Bought the original on a whim the day it launched and really enjoyed it, despite the flaws. Dragonfall is a masterpiece, but I'm yet to start with Hong Kong.

A Sharp Twin Famicom, be the coolest guy in town.

Nah :D Tempted to buy/find my old Mega Drive...

Yeah Dragonfall has been something else. The writing puts it on par with an excellent cyberpunk novel.

Well, it was a tabletop RPG originally. Same with Cyberpunk, which CDPR are turning into a game :)

Cool stuff, Mega Drive stuff is still pretty cheap which is handy.

Indeed. Fun to dick around with things when they're cheap. Might try my hand at some mods or something.

I once modded my Panasonic Q that I bought for £800 the week before. It's really a piece of piss to do these things.

My modded Snes was still the best, 60hz Mario Kart was the envy of everyone at school
How did you mod it? I'd have been shitting myself messing with something that cost that much
