Gaming The RedCafe General/Random Gaming Chat Thread

I like stealth gameplay, so it's a rather unfortunate combination for me.
Then you might actually like it.

It offers a lot of creativity in terms of stealth play - using boxes to hide in, gas grenades, chucking objects to distract enemies, camouflage clothes, making noises, hiding yourself/bodies under tables/closets etc. It's always been my favorite stealth game mechanics even if the camera angles can be harsh. Far better than the more drab one of Splinter Cell IMO.

Plus it's always been one of THE games for boss battles. Play MGS 3 Snake Eater at some point. Some of the best bossfights in gaming and definitely the ones I've loved the most.

It's one game where I don't mind the over-the-top cutscenes and storyline eihter, and end up finding it frickin' cool rather than gimmicky. It's just.. different. Hideo always seems to pull it off. (still playing 5 mind you)

While searching for that old GOTY thread, I have decided that there aren't enough good video game threads compared to a few years ago. Who knew @esmufc07 had such good taste

I don't think there's anyone here to talk about Super Metroid with these days :(

Timeless game. I may well go back and replay the Metroid games.

I still couldn't bring myself to watch and would have to skip them. I might get the HD collection if I see it for a good price some time.

Rising shall be the one I get first though, definitely looks more like my kind of game.

You are one cool dude.

I want to get Zero Mission some time, I've never played that one. Think I'll have a crack at completing the original NES one though first.

Just completed Torchlight II. Good fun game, bit boring and repetitive near the end though. Enjoyed it more than Diablo III.

Zero mission is a good game, though not as open and epic as Super Metroid. It's a little more linear than you'd expect iirc.

It looks so cool.

What about II on the Game Boy, have you played that one? What's it like?

Classic. Prepared to get lost a lot and experience what open world games were like when every single room looks exactly the same!

iirc it was tough but excellent and basically what Super metroid was based on. I remember playing it on some magnifying glass/joystick device you plugged the gb into. That and the mighty Parodius. Ahh Konami :(

Cool, sounds good! I want to play that one some time too.

Ah, all those Game Boy accessories  The only thing I had was one of those magnifier/light things

Yeah, big shame about Konami. Never played Parodius though.

A friend had one of those goofy things too, awkward, dodgy fix-it tech is the best.

Yep, if only we didn't have backlit screens these days, we would still be getting super cool stuff like that :(
True! Their one massive downside.

I still remember this wee clip on thingie I had for my original PSX controller, you clipped it on with some elastic bands over the D-pad to make it like you had a joystick.

That reminds me of another mod I did, google GBA backlighting mod one day when you are bored. Before Nintendo actually listened to us devs about the lack of backlight destroying the rather good palette capabilities of the very underrated little beast, we had to make do with bodging it

Don't think I've seen that one, sounds interesting though

I remember I used to always see adverts for the Afterburner mod for the GBA in gaming magazines, it always looked so cool. I'd still love a proper backlit original GBA, it's the most comfy of all the GBAs IMO, and to have a backlit one would be brilliant.

I once selotaped half a pencil to one to test. It made streetfighter ex sooooo much better
It was pretty much a somewhat more polished version of that.

OG GBA = BEST GBA, lighting was the one weakness.

Actually, it may be the most comfy of any handheld I've ever owned.

Yeah I just went and grabbed mine, it's so comfy. If it had the screen of a DS Lite then it would be perfect.

Edit: Actually just got my original "phat" DS and that's pretty damn comfy too, maybe a fraction more than the GBA.

I loved my fat DS(played it until it *literally* fell apart), very very comfy too, but I'd give the GBA the edge for it's size.

The 3DS's and PSP/Vitas of the world, while marvellous devices, just don't feel as good, especially for games you'd want to play for hours on end.

Any of the lighting mods are pretty easy to do if you take care.

You really should try it, my clear ice blue AGB with backlighting is still one of my prized possessions. In actual fact, the first AGB game I ever completed and was released was made on that very machine with a homebrew dev kit (which was by far better than the official Nintendo dev kits, we used them far more) from the mighty Liksang. I still have all the equipment and about 30 blank flash AGB carts

Yeah they definitely don't. Shame.

The only way I know of doing it is with a screen from an AGS-101, which are quite expensive to buy these days :(

I like the idea of a new cartridge system, but I'm not sure that will end up any good unfortunately, the company behind it seems to have been handling it pretty shoddily and it completely flopped when they tried it on Kickstarter.

Still, I wont rule it out, if it's a good price and has a decent amount of good games it could end up being very cool.

FFX is massively underrated

Wat.jpg? It won GOTY awards all over the place and has one of the highest average review scores of any RPG ever released. It's amazingly overrated.

Nope compared to 7 though. Or was i wrong? Internet hardly exist for me back then

Oh VII is just a force of nature. Nothing can be compared to it and its fanbase :D

It's shit compared to 7, though.

Be that as it may, I still say Final Fantasy VII is the most overrated of the bunch. Fanatical doesn't begin to describe hardcore VII fans.

Was hoping for a little bit better than 62% off (£11.39) on Dark Souls II: SotFS.

It was mayhem on release though, no real internet to speak of so the buzz around school and all that from magazines was immense. And to be fair, it was the first game that noticeably used cgi scenes well.

Though I said it then, and I'll forever say it more, 6 is superior. One of the the first real open world games that caught major attention and 7 then went more linear so a lot of us was let down by that.

Still it was one of the best experiences in gaming the day 7 was released and every day we couldn't wait to talk about it and compare experiences. It's a lot less fun these days arguing about games over the net, I feel sorry for those people who haven't experienced a truly unspoiled major launch only spread by word of mouth and a couple of small magazine images.

Yeah, VII was pretty mental back in the day. It was my first JRPG, and maybe even my first RPG... I know it was that for pretty much everyone my age (27), so people seem to look back on it with more fondness than perhaps it deserves.

6 => 9 > 7 > 4 > 5 for me. The NES games are forgettable (although I is always fun for custom party challenges), VIII is average, X is poor, XII is weird, and XIII is just straight up bad.

Is that final price?

Yeah. Sorry about the confusion.

6 > 9 > 8 > 12 > 7 > 10

Also, the most overrated rpg is Chrono Trigger, followed by FF7.
