The Redcafe Decades Draft Tournament

Since Figo is spent anyway he may as well use Villa there instead and get some proper firepower. I know the thinking is most won't see much of a difference between Sanchez and Villa, but I certainly do.

Same.

Ok I'm gonna stop trying to work all this out and just wait for the end teams!

Most teams have made some great improvements so the best round of fixtures will be interesting...

Indeed, I actually like this decade rule as it constrains things in such a way that everyone has actually got to make significant improvements on their sides. It is usually more a case of players going in "bestest order" but this forces managers to actually think about their sides, strengths and weaknesses, etc. and there have been some quite creative/left-field outcomes.

Villa's my man up front and Robbo's taking the midfield lads. Medical's been taken care of and we're just discussing personal terms. Only a last minute swoop in from a rival's taking him away from me.

In short, it has made it more interesting because you don't have everyone gunning for the best players for a 4-2-3-1 but actually exploring tactical nuances, which is good for a change. I was looking at Thuram to play a 3-4-3!!!

Unless VP spoils the party, Brwned. :p

As I said, unless a rival comes and steals him from the airport at the last minute he's all mine! Can see the temptation of wanting a Robbo in midfield up against Neeskens and Beckenbauer in fairness. Sammer moving forward into midfield just makes it look like you've brought in Beckenbauer-lite to hang on the end of emperor's robes all game.

Yeah I don't think he needs Ronaldo, RVN will never lose votes. I mean, as orgasmic as Gento-Ronaldo-Ronaldo could be, he should look at other areas. Has to be Scirea or Robbo IMO. Given this is redcafe, it makes the decision easier.

TBH, Matthaus and Robbo either side of Scholes would be quite a tasty midfield. I've thought about a holding DM all along but that is probably best at protecting Scholes as well.

Has to be Scirea IMO the more I think about it the more I love it

I do too. Is it better voting wise though? I am not sure.

Beckenbauer-lite will get brought up with Sammer, that you can be sure about

I do like the protection Scholes gets from Matthaus and Robbo TBH.

Either way, it's funny everyone called me names for suggesting Ronaldo would last. He is a nice to have that doesn't really best suit/ugrade most, which is what I'm liking about this decades rule. People are constructing teams, not just chucking names on a fake and disfunctional 4-2-3-1.

He would be long gone without the constraint. Now he is just going straight back to daddy.

Thoughts on keeping the formation the same ?

If he is going a 50's midfielder it has to be Platini, great contest there vs Zidane

That's what I thought you would be starting Stob. I would swap Keane and Masopust though. In posession I would expect Gerrard moves right, Pelé central (i.e. wherever he feels like being) and Rivaldo taking the left flank. That leaves Masopust-Keane in midfield which feels more familiar than Keane-Masopust. It's not just prettiness, Masopust's occasional slalom runs would work better from that side than so centrally and on the same side that Gerrard is charging as well.

But.. Platini

I know, I know, we all have  If it were up to me this would be a decades draft with four managers who can ONLY pick from a specific decade of their choice.

I'd pick the 40s. They simply played the best football I've ever seen:

Haha that is  indeed.

I thought of something similar to that before the CL draft, maybe adding some sort of nationality constraint as well.. Not sure how it would work but something like you pick half your team from a decade and half from a country.

Italian defence, then Brazilian 40s but with two out Jairzinho, Rivelino and Tostao starting. Filling that Beckenbauer spot would be a bitch though. Maybe Rivera as an Italian.

They, like that 40s team above would probably get murdered by a side packing the midfield though. My money would be on the 60s having the best balance to win it, but it wouldn't be the most fun to watch.

This is really weird. I just realised if I get Zanetti I'll end up with the side I was trying to draft until Gio took my Giacinto. :annoyed:

You sure had a fake 4-2-3-1 last time. I think I mentioned it was really a 4-4-1-1.

Is VP gone AGAIN???!?!?!?!

Got some bad news lads. Had a meeting with the senior players in the side today and after much deliberation we had to pass on Robbo. These lads are fierce competitors and have passed on the chance to have Robbo steamroller us through to the title.

Sorry lads, just missed me before leaving office.

Give me 10 to catch up and decide.

 Love it

Struggling with this:

--Sammer ---Mcgrath
Robbo - Mathaus - Scholes

or

---Scirea---McGrath
Sammer - Mathaus - Scholes

Thoughts?

Has to be Scirea really. Sammer's a big no-no at centre half for me.

I don't like your second one deploying a three, let alone in that order.

I would see Sammer behind Matthaus and Scholes, which may be the right call when having a #10 like Laudrup around. It leaves Scholes-Matthaus on Beckenbauer-Neeskens. Same problem as usual with Scholes as to how much people would rate him in recovery.

You also need to consider Zidane isn't exactly a winger either so putting a man on Laudrup shifts the focus to Zidane. It's a bit like chasing shadows really but it emphasises how much you needed a midfield.

As it stands, and taking into account that you can't solely rely on Scholes (as I said in your last game: mark Scholes out of the game and you lose the distribution), I'd probably go with Falcao. Will put in as much of a defensive shift as either of the other options but can spray balls alright.

Still feel a bit dirty passing up on Ronaldo twice thought.

Agree with all that if he was going for Robson, but Scirea changes the approach completely and really improves that defence.
