The Redcafe Decades Draft Tournament

Thats true but everyone is gonna have to do that given the decade rules - gonna be some right random 30's players knocking about

To be honest, I looked, and I could find at least 10 good 30s players and a few club legends. I don't think there is that many "obscure" ones, but I am glad I covered my base with it.. I would be as worried about the 80s (which you have covered).. Many good players but few "greats".

Aldo, PM me once you pick as I have Fergusson's pick

I'm off. Jayvin usually picks very early morning my time so no point hanging around. I'd PM choices but with 6 picks before me that's pretty much impossible.

Big gamble, could make me regret but sort of can't risk it specially with Brwned sniffing around... Nemanja Vidic

Because VP's gonna go off any second.

Midfield looks class. Souness was the right man to compliment the existing two. You still have the option to go for a diamond as well, or atleast have a spare CM as the 12th pick in case you need extra defensive ability. Personally with Zidane I wouldn't have gone for Suarez instead someone more physical and good defensively who was also good/decent on the ball or a proper box to box player. But then with Zidane and suarez you would have that extra number of chances created which is good to have.

Souness will work whatever midfield he goes for. I share the same view on Suárez, you really want him pnging balls to wingers or attacking fullbacks. Not sure what NMs plan is there though or if it is remotely feasible at this stage.

No worries NM, it's normal, particularly where we are. I look at the picks so far and get the distinct feeling we are feeding off scraps. I think I'll just go gt my favourites in regardless of whether it is the right time to get them. feck it, it's looking like a dour side if I try cover all the bases.

Ah come on, that's way too early for Vidic! Bastard. He was one of just a handful of 80s players I'm vaguely interested in.

Exactly. I looked at the options and just didn't want most of what I was looking at.

My initial plan was going for Vidic now and hoping Rio slips through as there are plenty of great names from 70s but you ruined it all.

 I just remembered how keen you were on him in the all-time draft and I just kept contemplating you by having him lined up a round too late. He is one of the top 80s picks though, no doubt.

There should be a Murphy's Law equivalent for Vidic: whatever turn you expect to get him in he will go the one before.

I think we both agreed that a Rio-Vidic partnership would go all the way specially since he comes from Serbia. I think that was the only pick in our plan we failed on.

Yes, it was the only part of the plan which didn't work, we even tried to get him in the reinforcements and someone decided to add his 100th CB. Had no use whatsoever for him... very frustrating.

I always had someone I felt was higher priority and kept postponing him... when he eventually got picked I thought you wre going to have me for breakfast

Didn't really skrew my team. Vida is just my favorite player.

You do seem to be Theon's identical twin, he also has an irrational soft spot for Vidic. Not that I don't rate him, but the reactions he elicits from you two are quite funny.

Eh?!?

That's definitely not true

Theon and I have a pretty similar football philosophy. I love Vidic because he was everything I wanted to be in a footballer. Same for the likes of somebody else I can't mention. All I had was their size (comparitively - I'm big for an Indian), strength, and heading ability. Aside from that, well, I'm shit.

No worries. You could have waited till your next pick IMO though.. I have a long way though. Doubt he would have reached me.

I could have which is why I believe this a gamble. Thing was, I didn't have anyone else I "really wanted now" so just went for him. In him I have at least one 80s players who would not trouble me much and wouldn't be out of place here. Wanted him and Rio ideally though, I need to lower my expectations I think this aint the fecking newbies

Great pick from Fergus by the way. I originally planned Facchetti-Zanetti (probably the same) but once that 40s slot freed up it had to be Carlos Alberto (and a handy 70s slot freed up for a midfielder).

True. I actually think I'm a little football retarded compared to some of the posters on here (and specifically in the draft thread) and I'm considered the most tactically savvy and knowledgeable about football in my friends group.. That doesn't bode well for us!

Same as me then.

One of my enduring memories of Theon is in the all-time United draft. He was going to face someone with three pacey forwards and was about to get reinforcements. He mentioned Vidic and I said -someone else- was a better option as he already had steel but needed pace. We discussed it in depth and he came to the conclusion it was better to go with the other.

Then someone picks Vidic before him and he starts cursing them just like you've just done because he was still going to go get him anyway. It's really funny, he asks for advice but you get the distinct feeling he doesn't give two shits what your feedback is, no matter how convincing your argument is.

These treads just open my eyes about how much I know about football. I've been following it from the start and will probably do so till the end just because it tells me so much i never knew about football.

Really happy to get Zanetti, probably the best all round right back out there!

The only Scottish midfielder that could hold his own here? No, he didn't, of course.
There's a few decent ones in fairness, but Souness was the standout and perhaps the best proper central midfielder the English top division has seen.
