The Redcafe Decades Draft Tournament

Everyone's upset at missing out on Fachetti, he was my pick if gio didn't go for him! Like I said, my favourite defender of all time...

I'm kicking myself because, as it stands, I would quite happily pick a 60s striker and have him as my second pick :annoyed:

Redondo, Falcao and Xavi? You haven't gotten over "more bodies in midfield = win" syndrome.

Already got a winger mate. Redondo behind those two would be incredible

Anto is like that kid at school who always claims he's not studied and his exams are going to go badly, but then goes on to max them.

Oh, I did study. The problem is I had constructed this uber-elaborate thing whereby wherever if I didn't get my first choice I had a reasonable option who would keep that role until that player became available. It would be a functional team waiting for upgrades, now I can't find a functional one, let alone one that can accommodate upgrades easily

Only issue being, like last time, you would have many players who want to be central in the scheme of things. Xavi wants to be the brain, so does Falcao and Redondo was always the one controlling the tempo of the game which again both Xavi and Falcao like to do. It looks like an overkill to be very honest.

Don't bother, it all adds up to synergy for Theon ;)

I am sure they could make it work!

When you're picking teams at this level pretty much every side will be like that. Come the final you could have Maradona, Cruyff, Xavi and Pele in the same side

Tried to plan ahead looking at the decades and player pools etc.. but feck it I'll just go for a personal favourite: Scholes.

It's a lesser issue in attacking midfield mainly because there's a lot more room to fit in players and you can have a couple of similar players work together as one of them could easily take up the wing when the other's setting things up from the middle. Even in your example, you have Cruyff who was great on the left wing and Maradona can be the one behind the forward. Same goes for players like Laudrup, Iniesta etc. And even this mainly works (with respect to drafts) when you have players willing to work hard and listen to others when not in their best position. For example if you have Maradona and Zidane together, it would not be their best because both would always want others to play their way and not vice versa.

Xavi at Barca decided how the team would play and every single man followed him. That is why he looks so much more at ease at Barca than at Spain because there is Xabi Alonso who likes to control the game from deep and won't always give it back to Xavi where he wants it like Busquets does so relentlessly. Same goes for Pirlo, all his comrades like Seedorf, Ambrosini or Gattuso allowed him to dictate play however he wanted.

I don't think "not working" is going to be an issue here as you said the players are of great quality and intelligence, however if a player was called one of the best of all time while playing in a particular role you would obviously not get "that" player in your team. Just like last time, if Pirlo is reduced to just a take it and give it back to me what he or anyone would be as long as Xavi is in charge, you would not get the Pirlo that stamped his authority on the game with having every control in his hand.

I don't really need to explain all this to you, just look at your first diamond in the last draft. It was not questioned once and rightly so because it had every player complimenting each other perfectly and you steam rolled over your opponent. 2 of Redondo, Xavi and Falcao is a bit of an overkill in itself but still fine but all 3 of them? Looks quite unbalanced that. Rather have players who are good at other roles in the same area to have a well balanced unit imo.

Sorry lads, just got in. Give me 10.

No problem mate. Your next turn might come soon as everyone after you seems to be here so if you plan to call it a night, you can leave your choice, preferably with a couple of backups, with me or someone after you.

Good call mate, I usually have it all planned out (just ask Aldo, we got the all-time one almost to a tee from round 4-5 on.

Impossible here and ultimately going with personal favourites is better than ending up with a dour soulless side. At least if you go out you have enjoyed arguing your players' case!

I myself wondered whether I would take Redondo AND Falcao if both available. Got all muppet, then discarded it. Now add Xavi!

Ok but should be around for a while at least till the game gets over.

Between a rock and a hard place here. One of my options Theon would take, the other Brwned... Decisions, decisions... Come on NM, I may be frying my brain over nothing!

I like Redondo/Xavi more than Falcao/Xavi personally, all three would be overkill I agree.

Me too, which is again why I would have left Falcao for fourth but not Redondo. As it turns out I don't have Theon as sussed as I thought

Difficult to predict these things, I don't think the person themselves arr sure who they will pick til the last minute!

I think I know who you are referring to when you say theon will pick him if you don't though, not sure about brwneds pick that you mentioned however.

Good pick NM, you need the right player to balance up with he and Zidane but if you find him it will be great.

I have a player in mind, but I was imagining Suarez more in his Inter days.. Not as attacking as he used to be earlier. You are right about needing the right player though.

I'm seeing him in the same way, deep lying playmaker. I'd suggest some serious steel next to him and Zidane.

One of the best 30's players, Suarez.

Mmmmm...

Got to give myself flexibility at this stage. Have the impression he is thick as pigshit though. It's not an intellectual contest though, is it?

I struggle to see that as anything but a diamond myself. Few could make it work as a three, an obvious candidate there really.

The way this is going, I need some insurance in midfield and in the centre of defence, so...
