The Redcafe Champions League Draft

Cantona was given his full international début against West Germany in August 1987 by national team manager Henri Michel. In September 1988, angered after being dropped from the national team, Cantona referred to Michel as a "bag of shit" in a post-match TV interview and was indefinitely banned from all international matches.[31] However, Michel was sacked shortly after that having failed to qualify for the 1990 World Cup.
The new coach was Michel Platini and one of his first acts was to recall Cantona. Platini stated that whilst he was coach, Cantona would be selected for France as long as he was playing competitive top-class football; it was Platini who had initiated Cantona's move to England to restart his career. France qualified for the 1992 European Football Championship held in Sweden, but failed to win a single game despite the striking partnership of Cantona and Jean-Pierre Papin. Platini resigned after the finals to be replaced by Gérard Houllier.
Under Houllier, France failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the U.S. after losing the final game 2–1 at home to Bulgaria when a draw would have sufficed. Houllier resigned and Aimé Jacquet took over.
Jacquet began to rebuild the national team in preparation for Euro 96 and appointed Cantona as captain. Cantona remained captain until the Selhurst Park incident in January 1995. The suspension which resulted from this incident also prevented him from playing in international matches.
By the time Cantona's suspension had been completed, he had lost his role as the team's playmaker to Zinédine Zidane, as Jacquet had revamped the squad with some new players. Cantona, Papin and David Ginola lost their places in the squad and were never selected for the French team again, thus missing Euro 96. Though there was media criticism about Cantona's omission, as he was playing his best football in the Premier League, Jacquet stated that the team had done well without Cantona, and that he wanted to keep faith with the players who had taken them so far.[32] The decision was vindicated as Les Bleussubsequently won the World Cup in 1998.
To this day, Cantona still harbours resentment for the people at the head of his national team but also admiration for his adopted football country; at Euro 2004 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he supported England and not France

Did Cantona play 20 games?

The internet says no...

1990=91 Cantona played 2 games for Marseille.
1993-94 United played in 4 games, Cantona played all 4.
1994-95 United played 6 matches, Cantona played in 2.
1995-96 United we not in the Champs league.
1996-97 United played 10 matches, Cantona played in 8.

Shiiiiiiiiit. Jake you're lucky Ralaks fell asleep or there would've been about way more picks made since!

I've done my own research and I reckon he played... 19 games. Definitely 16 for United, he played all 10 in 96/97. And I think 3 for Marseille in 90/91. More than duffer's 16 but still a heartbreaker for Jakey the way the rules stand.

Add in 5 for Leeds. He has 21 Champions League appearances.

feck yeah, Leeds! The layout of the wiki made me think they were talking about United in 92/93, but sure United were out of the Uefa Cup well before Christmas.

So I think it's actually 24 overall. Had you looked that up beforehand though?! ;)

Yeah, I had him down as 21. not 24.

Messi, Cantona, Buffon is a very strong trio from where I'm looking anyway.

what sire are people using to check if people have made enough apperances?

He is indeed. I'm horrible at this, Effenberg isn't picked then I think, plus he has 21 games from 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 seasons alone!

Him and Keane together in midfield!

Damnit. I was eyeing Effenberg if he stayed long enouigh!

feck, missed this one :(

If anyone needs an assistant, let me know.

Ruud comes under the "no Champions League medal" category too so I'm happy with that. Arguably the best striker in the modern tournament's era not to win the competition. Certainly the most prolific.

I really need to start thinking about the "no Champions League medal" players for my team. So many good players with medals that I want!

I should be around for the next few hours if anyone wants to pm me...

Totti, Bergkamp and van Nistelrooy were the three I had in my head for my next pick (after others had gone before me, of course). I wanted to pair Raúl with Totti or Bergkamp as a SS pair to a lead frontman, but I also knew the better strikers/goalscorers would be gone by the time it was my go as well. Fascinating draft so far in that so many posters are thinking alike. Totti, Bergkamp and van Nistelrooy are all non-winners of the tournament, too.

It's shaping up nicely so far.

I didn't plan it out this way, but after picking Hagi all my picks are non-winners

Totti, Bergkamp and van Nistelrooy was in my mind.. need those non winners!

Drafting in the middle is such a bollocks, you don't get the advantages of getting one of the truly standout players at the start nor do you get to pick two quickly and guarantee partnerships.

I feel your pain:(

Argh, I debated taking Ferdinand but for some reason thought he might fall back to me. 2 picks later.

Probably best to go with one each from defence, midfield and attack first three rounds though.
