The Redcafe Champions League Draft

I really wanted Davids :(

Haha me too mate, I thought Gio would have snapped him up because I know he is a big fan

It's interesting how similar everyones shortlist is - in the PM he sent me Tito picked Desailly and the backup was Davids, then for second pick he wasnted Rui Costa and his back up was Del Piero. So of the last 9 players picked he had four of them as his 1st or 2nd choice

I was hoping people would forget about Keane too. Davids Keane and a play maker in midfield would of been unbelievable.

Iniesta and Pirlo is a fantastic midfield so far. Cantona and Messi up top though

Ralaks was looking at this thread after it was his turn to pick and then fecked off, the cock.

How do you plan to get Cantona and Messi in the same team? Messi is best as a false nine and Cantona best off a striker. I dont know how Messi would do with someone playing off him, as they'll get in eachothers way.

Right lads I'm off out for a bit, I'll be back on about 1ish if anyone needs someone to PM a pick to

Hopefully Ralaks will get his on soon but I think Nahealai said he was at the airport till 12 so there wil be a long wait anyway.. :boring:

As Fergie would have said, there's always a place for good player.

Two of the best players of all time that can play in lots of different positions.

I could play a 4-3-3 with them both off a target man. I could play Messi out wide. Play a flat 4-4-2

They're both geniuses and will enjoy playing off each other.

Yeah well in the all time draft when I had Cruyff--Maradona--Garrincha, it was labelled as "too many cooks spoil the broth" just to warn you

That is one of the best things about Messi, kinda like what we were saying about Maldini but in attack - you could stick him anywhere across the front line and he'll be the best player on the pitch

What do people think of Figo and Vieira at the time we picked?

I think I had a similar pick in my last fantasy draft. Figo and some midfielder (don't think it was Vieira). My 3rd pick was also excellent but some of the latter ones weren't.

RVP Rooney and Welbeck started plenty of games together last season, they did fine.

No way! As long as there are enough workhorse and balance on the team, those legends would work just fine. And those three aren't shy on putting dirt on their shirt either.

It was a crime jake, a crime!

Indeed. Thought I was sitting pretty but then crashed and burned. Cruyff and his ego ruined everything. The Twat.

Yeah he was my number one combative midfielder, but I've had him in a couple of drafts before and got knocked out in the first stage both times, so I'm not sure if he's gaining as many votes as he should be. But it's good to see him appreciated here.

Tv programme on itv4 coming on at 12, called "from Ronaldo to Ronaldo", about some of the best CL players.

Probably won't but you never know, might remind you of a few gems and should be a decent watch even if it doesn't.

We need to find some schmuck(s) reading but not participating that we PM a few picks to. If it's our turn but it's been over a certain amount of time and we haven't picked, we get our first choice from the PM. And/or lower the time limit after a certain number of rounds, 12 hours is too much.

I think 12 hours is fine, we can maybe reduce it to 6 for those who have already missed a 12 hour deadline?

That said, it should be pretty easy to pm your pick to someone if your not going to be online, just give it to someone that isn't going to pick until yours are made.

Like the person who's turn it is now, he could've pm'd anyone after him, like me, and we could've got a few more picks done !

I reckon you'll still be waiting at 2pm tomorrow mate.

I'm gonna call it a night now as well. I can PM a pick, but frankly it's very unlikely we'll have made half a dozen picks between now and 8am.

On Cantona: I thought long and hard about including him (and I know we're all United fans and are biased towards him), but where do others see him in the pantheon of greats? I know many on the continent would have two or three others ahead of him in his position in the time-frame we're talking about.

That's the beauty of these drafts, though. It stirs up some great debates.

Nah boys, leave it. There's no way we're going to motor through the next few picks in that space of time. I'm going offline myself in a few minutes so you'll not get past me anyway!

To be honest on any other forum he'd be down the list as a second half of the draft pick, particularly given his underwhelming performances in Europe, which isn't necessarily a criticism of him but a reflection of the depth of attacking quality to choose from. But he'll be a big vote-winner I imagine.

I believe that Cantona was the best player in the world when he was in his prime. He was a genius.

I've looked through other drafts, and he's normally a fourth seed. He compliments my team beautifully though, I want technically gifted players.

I certainly wouldn't have any concerns picking Messi and Cantona together, they are stylistically different enough to complement one another.

The worst thing is Ralaks was looking at this thread after it came to his turn!

I don't wanna belittle Jake but this is nonsense surely? No one would ever consider Cantona's the best in the world. He couldn't even get in the France squad. Zidane and Djorkaeff both performed better.

Honestly, Cantona in a champions league draft is a shocking pick, in my opinion

Cantona was a genius, and a superb player. Saying the best in the world might be too much. By no means was he not a world class player.

Cantona

Technically world class
Had a great presence
Good in the air
Goalscorer
Played well in big games
A leader
In my opinion one of, if not the best player to grace the premiership.

PM someone just in case mate!

IMO never has a player been so ingrained into a club than Cantona, not even Messi at Barcelona. When he was with us, the manager, fans, stadium, country, teammates, everything just worked perfectly for him and us. In drafts such as these, when like you said there's many other options, I find it difficult to imagine Cantona in another shirt, let alone integrating and gelling anywhere near as well as he did with Utd.

Still a good pick though, the king, a genius and yeah I think he and Messi is pretty drool worthy.

He meets all the criteria and is then judged at his peak, so it's clever.

Also, he fell out with the French FA, I'm sure he was captain prior to that.

It's the best player in the world I didn't agree with. Yeah he was class no doubt but maybe a bad pick for a CL draft given he did nothing in it. Maybe he'll get votes but mate

I think you're missing the point of the draft, it's not based on the CL performance, but their career.

In fairness Cutch, the OP says that players aren't to be judged solely on Champions League performances.
