The Redcafe Champions League Draft

Ah, my bad.

Not at all, I should have clarified all this earlier on - bad hosting on my part

If we all agree to use transfermarket as the primary source, and then the other one incase transfer market doesn't have the data or something.

So the transfermarket link is there and I'll stick it in the OP - go to performance data and it lists the stats for every competition

Euro 2000 was left back IIRC man, they did play 3 at the back but it was Maldini and Zambrotta as wingbacks

But yeah he was definitely quality there, in the last draft we were going to move him CB for the quarters - but he is still a better left back. That is where the bulk of his success has come, even in his later years
You can play Maldini anywhere across the back four without problem and he's still the best defender in this whole thing. For a start, he was naturally right footed.

What are you talking about? He isn't the best right back in the competition and isn't the best centre back.

Make a case for it if you think it is though, this thread is for discussion so I'm be interested to read it.

It needs to be more than "he is right footed", though.

My point is he's so good he could play anywhere. Yes, I could name better right-backs and I suppose my point wasn't to be taken too literally. But an argument over whether he was better at centre or left is almost trivial when you need to select the rest of your team because put him in either and it's the best you're going to get.

Yes, I do think he's the best centre-back available (with Baresi not).

The right footed part was merely a point (forgotten by many perhaps) to prove he was arguably the best left back ever despite not even being left footed. No, he won't be the best right back and I can't even recall him playing there, but I'd wager that if he did he'd have been the best at that as well.

Absolutely Cling, I agree with virtually everything you're saying, Maldini could go in either left or the centre and be a perfect choice. He is marginally better as a left back though and pretty much the consensus greatest of all time, let alone the CL era!

My only comment originally was that Nesta is the best CB and I don't think that is controversial, there is a few candidates but he's the best player IMO, slightly ahead of the likes of Maldini. We wouldn't be able to have the same debate with left back though because Maldini is so far ahead of all the opther option - it is undisputed.

Does that make sense? I think he is absolutely brilliant and if he had somehow made it down to 14 (never would have happened) I would have picked him first choice and over any other defender - including Nesta - so I am not trying to criticise him at all.

Whether or not he is better at left back is definitely a trivial argument, but so many football arguments are!

Saying Nesta is a better CB isn't controversial, no. Nesta was an incredible defender. It's close.

The only reason I said it was trivial (and whilst many footie arguments are, I love it!), is because with Maldini, he's got the option of selecting a CB & LB or 2x CB's to compliment, such is his class in either position. Other players can play more than one position but not to the level of Maldini.

He's also won the competition as many times as Liverpool, which is something else I love about him.

.

I'd say Thuram can play RB or CB equally well?

I agree though, Maldini is a great pick not just because of how good he is, but also because he provides good flexibility in terms of picking the other defenders.

Very good shout. Though he's marginally lower on the list than Maldini, he is World Class at both. In that sense, Thuram is offering both.

Player of the tournament at France '98, for my money.

Yeah I thought so too, Zidane did used to get all the plaudits for that tournament but I think it's safe to say it was Frances supreme defence that was the key factor.

Also, when he wears glasses he reminds me of Stringer Bell. That's only a good thing.

Nahealai, Snow and Akash are all online, can smash through three quickly now hopefully

No rush though :)

Edit - ahh feck, was looking at the wrong list. Ralaks is up and hes not online :(

Nobody, mate. I figured I'd be home before it was my go (or at least within the 12 hour time-frame) so I didn't PM anybody.

I'll post my pick in a few minutes. One of two of the cnuts below me in the order are after fecking up my masterplan!

Nice one mate.

I hate it when your pick gets taken at the last minute!

Zidane sits in people's memory because of the final, where he scored twice and made Brazil look silly on several occasions. His tournament was actually very stop-start and inconsistent, in part due to his 2+ game suspension. 2006 was similar in terms of suspension and performance. But he delivered at key moments. Goals and headbutts.

I've PM'd Ralaks so he'll know he's up when he's next online.

I've to head to the airport now and won't be online until about 12 o'clock tonight, just in case it gets back to my turn and you're all wondering why the feck I'm being an arse! BD/NM pissed off a fair few last night with this kind of gamesmanship!

It wasn't gamesmanship! I BD and I came online and thought Henry was available for some reason. He wasn't. That made us change our picks.

I honestly thought BD was going to post the picks, but he didn't so I just went ahead and did it.

S
I'll be honest, I wanted Scholes to partner Xavi but I knew Raúl wouldn't last long so I'm happy to take the plunge now. Ultimately goal-threats are what decide the voters' minds in these drafts so getting one on board now makes sense.

Scholes and Xavi would be too much for any side. I was thinking to partner Redondo and Scholes. Now I wish I'd have done that.

You mean after we had decided? Yeah, I fell asleep! Was really tired and a bit drunk and was in bed and sent you a pm then fell asleep. Sorry bout that!

I'll vote for you on Raúl alone. My all time favorite player.

Or I'll definitely not vote for you at all because you took him.
