Should have probably realised Terry wouldn't have gone early as he's not the most popular lad, but he was still a phenomenal defender. Obviously rated very highly across Europe, 3 times voted the best defender and 4 times in the UEFA team of the tournament.

There were other options to pair Terry with but not so much Carvalho with a lot of the dominant Vidic type defenders already picked. Hence Terry picked first. Happy enough with how its turned out i think.

Its a great partnership but i don't think Blanc is rated at all highly on here. I guarantee every match thread will be based around exploiting his lack of pace which is silly given he reads the game so well. We didn't consider him at all for that reason.

Yeah it's going well.

I'm always more inclined to pick up the classy sweeper type defender first and go for the stopper type later. Your plan worked really well though. You'll need to find a good Makelee replacement though!

Yeah I agree, so many will just remember his United stint at the end of his career. His best football was also not at a huge club (Montpellier, Nimes, Saint Etienne, Auxerre etc) which would definitely work against him I reckon

But he was absolutely immense, such an elegant player.

Haha. I wanted to go with some exuberant flair for my fourth but decided to curb that temptation and get the midfield anchor sorted, something I'm glad I did now considering there aren't many great ones left!

Pretty sure Savicevic was on the bench, Zidane on the left and Scholes in the AM role, with Xavi next to Souness, I might be making that up though.

That was once you picked Xavi, indeed. You had Zidane, Scholes and Savicevic but couldn't resist taking Xavi on. Love it.

What screwed you at the end was the nationality rule, right? You couldn't play Matthaus and have a proper right back at the same time, or something along those lines.

Be careful with the CL one here.

Nope, that's why I think Gio finally plumped for a right-footed leftback. He is a great pick, I actually wonder if he shouldn't have gone for him ahead of Zanetti, leaving him free to choose a right or left back later.

People always bang on about fullbacks not winning this but I think it is the sort of position you get a top class chap who complies with the rules early and never look back again. Having fullbacks that are on the wrong side of the constraint (nationality or CL winning), or rubbish ones, can come back to bite you in the arse.

Cutch knows all about that ;)

Yep for sure. With so many superb wide players also you can't really get away with having a weak link out there i'd say. Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Robben and co will tear them a new one.
