The Redcafe Champions League Draft

So I am thinking about partnership here.. I will have Arjen Robben.

He will link up well with RvP.

He's a great player mate but thb, he won't link up well with anyone.

Robben links well with nobody mate.

Still, great pick. Was considering him for the wing.

You guys are right but at least he knows RvP.. Could not resist picking him and some individual class is needed in every great team.

Robben and Giggs is a terrific set of wingers. I thought Enrique was going on the right originally but I much prefer what you have done now!

Yeah, Enrique can play AM or box-to-box now depending on what I can get.

I'm not criticizing the pick - I was tempted to get him myself! Just found the link language funny.

Zvonimir Boban. Can play on left right and amc.

Someone PM the next one, plz.

I'm just having fun. You set me up for that one. He was my first choice on the right of the ones that are left. But no hard feelings on picking him.

I see you

Happy to pick up a top-drawer, non-Champions League-winning full-back.

Good pick Zambrotta. Wanted him but just went for Robben instead last pick.

Yes, had a similar debate here, Robben for all his selfishness is one of the most potent wingers in the draft and one who might have gone earlier had he been more popular.

Some already have the makings of a very good side there, others have intriguing choices and are more "wait and see".

I can already see from the picks players will be rated quite differently from what they would have a couple of years ago, which is what I find really weird and interesting in these things.

Some comments/feedback, nothing to get worked up about:
  • Tito will have a hard time selling his team. All good players but at least three tend to divide opinion.
Thanks for the feedback anto!

I'll have work to do come match day. Will be making sure to remind everyone of the Essien that destroyed Keane et al and how much of a beast he was in his prime, as opposed to the post injury Essien.

Same with Blanc really, in his prime we need to focus on, not when he was playing for Utd.

Absolutely devastating at his peak at Parma and Lazio, former most valuable player in the world and second highest scorer for Argentina

This is a good shout. Slightly under-rated, but he was as good a goalscorer as anyone at his peak. A bit like Falcao but more adept with his back to goal.

Exactly. We're hopin people remember Mendieta at Valencia and not at Boro, and Kaka at Milan not at Real.

Sorry lads, akash isn't here to discuss and he hasn't authorized me to pick someone for this turn so unfortunately we would need to wait a little longer.

Crespo was one of our back up options. Didn't think he'd go so early if at all. Would have linked up well with Kaka

Silly.. his peak was as good as any bar 3 or 4 in this draft. Career was ruined primarily by injuries and secondly by moving clubs too much, but around 1999-2000 he was unplayable.

Sorry for the delay, had an exam today...

I pick Steve McManaman. Very good dribbler, quick, 2 time winner and something of a cult hero at Madrid. Delighted to get him and imo he's better than some of the wingers that have already been taken.

Robben in your team would have worked very well indeed. More so than in EDogen's if you ask me. I wouldn't have picked Robben if I were him. With Giggs already there you want a real standout right winger who will be at the same level all the way to a possible final, i.e. not Robben. Sixth pick could have been better used elsewhere, unless he was VERY keen and set on Luis Enrique keeping a central midfield spot throughout, which I can't argue with. Hierro and AN Other would have been enough for now though.

Essien that destroyed Keane? Essien was meant to be our Keane replacement. He was a beast, but that argument doesn't fly with me.

Players who had their peaks elsewhere but played out their careers in the PL usually get rough treatment relative to their peak form, and you already have two, particularly if you are planning on having Desailly as a defender.

By at least I meant to leave Desailly out though, Rui Costa's appreciation on here is quite mixed.

I think you are safe with Kaká as his games against us were with Milan as well. Mendieta though, that was so long ago... He ahsn't been rated anywhere near as hgihgly as he should in prior drafts.

I really like the look of Team Snow.

Agree with you on Rui Costa at number 3 - that's the only one of Tito's I think is even potentially questionable, the rest are spot on I reckon. Essien's peak was very high and as a 5th round pick there wasn't many better ballwinner options IMO.

Blanc at number 4 was an absolute steal, easily one of the best in the draft - I said at the time he is underrated (which he is) but that is down to Tito to put right in the matchday threads. But anyway, even allowing for Blanc being underrated as a 4th round pick it isn't even debateable - great pick as far as I am concerned.

Matching him up with Desailly and recreating that France 1998 and Euro 2000 partnership makes it an even better choice.

There certainly is the possibility of Desailly being underrated, but I expect that to be shot down in the matchday thread with ease. His ability isn't even questionable - one of the undisputed greats of the era.

Thoughts so far...?

Gk
Thuram/RB - Thuram/CB - Ayala - LB
Makelele - Bastian
RW - Moller - LW
Batistuta

Rui Costa and Desailly are two of the best of thier generation in thier positions IMO.

I can see all you say, that's why I didn't say they were bad picks but picks that divide opinion. And they don't do it consistently so you may find someone not rating Blanc much but rating Essien, for example.

It's really very difficult to address that in match threads, most people don't read them. I actually rate Desailly higher in midfield, higher than Essien at his peak as well, but I can see how it may look better for both him and Blanc to make a defensive duo. WC and Euro-winning pair, hard to argue against that indeed.

He just needs to manage that and stay on top on how much it affects his team's attractiveness, with a view to making changes later if needed.

Rui Costa is very under rated unfortunately, I've had him once and he was ignored.
