The RedCafe Boxing Thread

Only caught up with this fight last night. Truly shocking stuff from the judges.

I believe its been investigated as well. Not that anything will be done.

Shit like that is killing boxing.

Completely agree, the worst I've seen this year was Mickey Bey (a Mayweather fighter on a Mayweather card) not only getting a gift, but scored as if he'd just won practically every round. The judge should immediately be under investigation.

Golovkin this weekend :devil:, when the odds come out get on KO rounds 1-6. Rubio is a come forward guy and will exchange with GGG. He is in for a world of hurt.

More interestingly we have 2012 fighter of the year Nonito Donaire against an undefeated banger from Jamaica, Nick Walters. Bookies have it practically level, which I think makes Donaire a good value bet. Walters can bang but Donaire hasn't touched the canvas in his career, when it comes to boxing ability it's like night and day between the two of them, Nonito should take advantage of Walter's failings and outpoint him. I will be betting on an outright Nonito win.

The Donaire fight is just about to start. Should be a good 'un.

Except Ward, no one at <175 can touch GGG. He's a monster.

Rumours he traded knockdowns with Groves in sparring recently. With his power you'd fancy him to step up to SMW if (when) he cleans up a MW that has Alvarez kept away from him, however dominance in SMW is far from a formality.

His promoter said that they've offered both Chavez and Froch fights at 168 in the past. I think the Canelo-GGG fight will happen after Canelo ends Cotto's career. Then when GGG has all the belts, he'll move up.

A Croatian boxer has been banned for life after hitting the ref. Rightly so too! I'm not sure what was going through the boxers mind at all here, what an idiot!

What an absolute twat. He completely deserves a ban for life.

Credit to the other boxer for running out of the ring as somebody was getting assaulted.

Should be charged with assault.

Also, the other boxer :lol:

Ward the part-time boxer would fall as well, all it would take is one getting through and he would be in survival mode. I would love that fight to happen because the odds on a ko would be so juicy!

You can't have seen Ward fight much if that is your conclusion. Ward hasn't had to go into survival mode throughout his career because he simply takes away his opponents best weapon which in this case would be GGG's power. He did it to Froch and anybody who saw him dismantle a fully focused Chad Dawson, or negate Abraham's power will know just how strategic a fighter he is. The inactivity wouldn't make that much difference as he came back from a long lay off and dismantled Edwin Rodriguez who was pretty much one of the most promising guys at the weight, however Ward would do well to get any potential rust out of his system before facing GGG.

To say Ward would fall so simply is silly, he has been calling GGG out for a while but GGG quite wisely doesn't seem to want anything to do with him at this point. Ward has fought the better opponents at this stage of his career and hasn't really been in a close fight for at least the last 7-6 years. Fair enough GGG hasn't been in a close fight either at any stage of his career to date but who has he fought?

If you watch GGG's fights closely he can be gotten to quite easily and is heavily reliant on power. Ward has made a career out of taking away power from opponents but not allowing them to land clean, ask Kessler he'll tell you the same.

Not a chance. Ward is an exceptional boxer in all aspects of the sport - clean, dirty, inside, outside, mid range, jabs, crosses, hooks, fast hands, arguably the best footwork since Floyd slowed down, concussive power etc. The only thing he lacks is charisma to sell a fight.

He's far too big for GGG today and the difference will only get bigger. He's an absolute monster at SMW physically. He can comfortably compete at LHW and has often spoken of as dream to imitate Roy Jones jr and target Cruiser and HW. It's all achievable. He could school any fighter into a UD.

He just needs to drop this contract wrangle and get back in the game.

I'm afraid he isn't now and wasn't then, just another nothing fighter with an inflated record. Perhaps that's the way Ward's promotional team spun it! Ward is a great boxer, or he was when he was actually boxing genuine contenders (over 2 years ago). However, given that Golovkin's compubox stats on accuracy are akin to defensive fighters like Lara, yet he is is probably p4p the most powerful guy in the sport, I think it's fair to say that we are dealing with a phenomenon. His amateur record is impressive and he has dealt with everyone that's given him a fight, understandably he is very avoided. Knocking out Geale and Adama when neither had been stopped before are probably the most impressive feats on his cv, I think we all agree that everyone else at middleweight would be stopped.

He would be giving up 2 inches in height and 1 inch in reach if he fought Ward, hardly an insurmountable disadvantage. I very much doubt that he would duck the challenge if Ward was genuinely interested in fighting him. However, I suspect Ward is happy to live the Mayweather life; have everyone accept that he's god's gift without actually being required to test himself. I hope I'm wrong about that but it sure looks like I'm right given his large period of inactivity, and the fact he only deigned to fight Edwin Rodriguez when he could get a date. Ward is elusive (in every sense) but he would eventually be found by Golovkin, his accuracy combined with the enormous power would sap Ward's energy and I think he would be fighting on the back foot, in survival mode.

Be more depressing when he inevitable lines up against Joshua :(

Jaysus I really hope that doesn't happen. Joshua in fairness seems to ramping up his level of opponent now. His last opponent was better and more durable than this version of Williams, so Williams would be a step backward really. It was grim watching him tonight. His chin and legs have just completely gone, and it sounds like he's taking a beating off very mediocre fighters constantly now. I could see him ending up in a bad state health-wise :(.

So Chris Eubank Jr missed another press conference again lol. I really think Eubank Jr will win the fight but he is making it hard to like his personality.

You obviously rate Ward highly. How do you think he'd have done against a prime Calzaghe?

Good question. Was a huge Calzaghe fan so I'm perhaps biased to his abilities. I'd fancy Joe to edge a close points decision. He, like Ward, was a very good fighter in so many aspects it would be a fascinating battle.

I think where Calzaghe shines in this fantasy fight is that he was a master at adapting within a fight to turn it in his favour. An example of this is the Kessler bout, Calzaghe has spoken of how he switched his footwork up to create a slightly off centre angle, it went completely against tactics in his camp and it won him the fight by allowing him to finish exchanges on his shots and being out of range for counters. Despite the knockdowns against RJJ and BH too he had a granite chin so the size difference would have been negated.

How about you?

Funnily enough the bolded part is exactly what I had in mind and the main reason I think Calzaghe would edge it. It was possibly his defining skill, along with his amazing stamina and chin, I suppose.

I'm also a big fan. I think he wipes the floor with Carl Froch or George Groves for example. The only one now who comes close is Ward, imo. Calzaghe was absolute quality but still frustrated me with some of his career decisions. Not just leaving America til so late but towards the end of his career he could have easily fought a Chad Dawson or a Kelly Pavlik (pre-Hopkins) to enhance his reputation even more. What do you think?

Joe was by no means unbeatable of course. I think a prime Roy Jones Jnr and maybe Hopkins beat him for example, so Ward would have a very good shout but probably falls short of those guys and indeed, Calzaghe.

Thoughts on the many fights this weekend chaps?

At present I'm picking:

Stieglitz
Adamek
Kovalev (KO)
Abregu

@Pat_Mustard
@BAMSOLA
@Lance Uppercut

I have a tough time picking against Hopkins after him surprising me so many times in the past. I think I'll go Hopkins by unanimous decision, although I'm anything but confident about that pick. Stylistically Kovalev isn't really the sort of busy, tricky fighter that Hopkins has occasionally had problems with - he generally loves neutralising and counter-punching against aggressive fighters. Kovalev of course looks a very different proposition to the likes of Tavoris Cloud in terms of quality and power.

I did see Golovkin's trainer say this about Kovalev:

I know, its only sparring, Sanchez is hardly unbiased and Golovkin is a very different fighter to Hopkins, but if there's truth to it, it does make me wonder if Hopkins will be able to psyche out Kovalev and slow down his output like he does with so many opponents.

Shut out UD win for Kovalev. The end of B-Hop?

Very impressive from Kovalev. Hard to see anyone beating him in the near future.

Cleverly v Bellew face-off was just on. Bellew seems obsessed... not sure if he's gonna wear himself out before the fights even happened.

Some decent fights out there tonight:

Khalid Yafai has just won a UD over Briceno. Matthew Macklin to fight next on Sky Sports 2 while plenty of rivers are avaliable to watch Wladimir Klitschko fight imminently in arguably his toughest contest since Haye, given how Povetkin was allowed to be wrestled and not boxed.

Warning: Jim Watt is on top form to annoy people with his biased and abysmal commentary though so best to watch the Sky broadcast with the mute button.

It's also live on Eurosport 2 right now.

Over confidence did Pulev massively. Stood up right and matched Wlad's style. Landed a big shot early on and had Klitschko dazed, not wobbled. Then got dropped twice, heavily. Nothing much in the second. Dropped again in the third. Klitschko began to push forward with more conviction in fourth. Pulev landed another good punch in 5th, Wlad smuggled and held on then immediately on the break, just as Pulev's confidence was coming back, returned with a devastating left to drop the Bulgarian flat on his back.

The style was there to cause Klitschko the most problems in years but the over confidence cost him dearly. Hats off to Wlad again. Still far too much (and definitely an illegal level of) holding and wrestling over boxing but you cannot deny the man his dues. Efficient, ruthless style. Bravo.

EDIT: I wish he'd fight out of the German / Eastern European comfort zone he has where the style is accepted and allowed to happen. He'd probably win regardless but just to see how it would play out over here or nowadays in the states against a Wilder or Stiverne would be interesting to see.
