The Netherlands (Holland) Euro 2024 Squad & Discussion

The lack in bench options is worrying on midfield (and attack) with missing out on Lang Koopmeiners Frenkie Q Timber de Roon

Wijnaldum as first option midfield sub is just sad.. He is even worse than I thought he would be..
What happened to him? He was rampant for Liverpool and nosedived the minute he left?

He was horrofic at both Roma and PSG, was horrific in all national games in that period, moved to the dessert and for some reason Koeman decided to bring him a couple weeks before the tournament just because of the sheer memory that he used to be good..

Somehow there is always the hope with Memphis that he will actually be good. But as usual Memphis has 1 or 2 moments that make you think he can do something but overall he is just average at best.

I'm not really sure what he is to be honest. But he is certainly not a striker.

Some kind of second striker in a 4-4-2 or old school '10' that is allowed to do his own thing. He could decide a match with one moment but he doesnt have that moment often enough.

Broke his leg pretty much as soon as he moved to Roma. Was out for a year

Ah yeah thats true.. Completely forgot about that.. The year before he was already dreadful for (admittedly, a very unstable and disorganized) PSG.

And Koeman remembers that the Memphis + Wijnaldum duo worked well together in the past. He just forgot that that version of Wijnaldum was a lot better than whatever this current Wijnaldum version is. Wijnaldum has been the worst player on the pitch every time he was on the pitch for our national team in all games that he recently played.

I hope Frimpong will start next game, I'm not a fan of Xavi Simons on the right wing. Also not a lot of effort from him today. He jogs forward the way Rashford jogs back.

The options in attack are quite good arent they? Bringing on Frimpong and Malen is not half bad and silly Wout, well, he made quite an impact in his last 2 international tournament matches:angel:

Your manager needed an injury to a journeyman to call up your best striker from the beach 2 days before the first game

I've watched the left to right dancing video of the Dutch fans in the streets of Hamburg at least 10 times already today. What a rush that must be to be part of that crowd :D

Could potentially be an annoying team for one of the favorites to meet, as demonstrated tonight. Solid defence and energy.

Only saw a portion of the game today but did see him on the ground half dead and complaining he was fouled. Minutes later he scored that disallowed goal he looked perfectly healthy.
He had a face on him like a well slapped arse when it was struck off

He grew up in Spain and has many of the Spanish theatrics. He loves falling over when there is any kind of contact and if there is no contact he still loves to fall over. He does look like he can start to cry any moment when he is on the pitch.

He is very good at playing football. He just hasnt really shown it for our national team yet.

Fun team but would need a miracle (read - an easy draw) to go far. Not enough quality up front. We (France) were quite comfortable letting your forwards have a run at our defense all night long.

I think they did well against France. I wouldn't be confident that England would beat them .

International football is chiefly about playing in-form players who run the show at their club.

Holland have two of the most in-form players in the world in Maatsen and Zirkzee, yet Koeman gives them no minutes.

They wouldn´t even be in the squad without last minute injuries. Mindboggling.

I agree, but it is a lot to ask to give minutes to new players in games where the pressure is on. They joined last minute.

Still, I‘d like to see them get a shot.

All things considered, I think this Dutch team is pretty decent. Aside from Spain & Germany, others haven't really impressed so the Dutch may very well go far.

Us or the French?
Netherlands I meant, but could be both. :D The Dutch team is pretty alright elsewhere though; a bit more quality up front and they'd be serious candidates for the tournament. (And you anyway never know, of course.)

I'm actually optimistic for the future in that respect, cause there are a lot of good young players all across the team - except in attack again.

They could easily beat England imo. At worst get extra time and pens.

Van Dijk was hardly scared handling Kane at his peak so this 2024 version wouldn't be a huge bother for him. Frimpong + Dumfries running at Trippier would a potential game winning combination aswell and keep England in their own half.

Bringing in Maatsen or even Van De Ven at LB would nulify Saka aswell.

Would be interesting knock out game. I refuse the draw is that lopsided that all of the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Germany, France wouldn't come near England until the SFs, Southgate certainly did a deal with someone when he took over when you look at England's knock out draws since he took charge.

We would be decent with Frenkie next to Schouten. We can't play football against any decent team without him.

We should also put Zirkzee up top obviously. Not too sure about Maatsen with 4 at the back. Ake is fantastic.

You might be better without Frenkie...

Yeah they’re looked fairly decent, but gut instinct still says they’ll come undone pretty early in the knockouts

I'd give us a chance if we were good at penalties, as we are quite good at not conceding.

We're not though. Well maybe if we can get a shoot out against England both teams can take turns missing until one team dies of boredom and defaults.

People saying this is just mind boggling to be honest, absolutely insane.. It's like saying England would be better off without Phil Foden, because he is not as dominant as you hope him to be..

True, Frenkie very rarely was as dominant for NL as he was for Ajax, but stating that we are better off without him is just ludacris..

I'm not a huge fan of his acting work in the Fast & furious franchise, but to blame the underapreciation of Frenkie on him is harsh.

You're right though, we miss Frenkie very much. Not because he dribbles past 5 players and shoots it in the top corner, but simply because he can carry the ball from back to front under pressure. We can't do that now, so all games against top teams will end up as they did against France.
